I have a orion xtr 400 watt amp running my 12, and I think it is overheating cause it is hot out anyway, and after 30 mins of hard use it cuts out. What can I do?

That is very strange that it cuts out. I have the same amp running my 12's. Are you using it at less than four ohms mono? Even if you are I would imagine it could handle that. What kind of 12 is it? I don't think it would be able to push a HCCA or a stroker or anything of that nature.

I think it's the heat too. Every amp that I've owned that's over a couple of years old begins to choke in this Texas heat. I'd try installing a fan on it.

I think you can get a fan from radio shack (like for computers) and those are pretty cheap. Of course, you'll need a relay to make it turn on and off. The expense is more in making a custom mount for it.

How would you hook up a cooling fan from radio shack? I was wonder about that. Where do you get the power and make it come on when the amp turns on???

Connect it to the same block that the amp is getting its power. Look at computer stores. Those fans should work.

Apparently there's a relay that you connect to the fan and amplifier. This connects the fan to the remote turn-on at the amp and the 12V+ power. The fan only comes on when you turn on the radio. I got this info from my co-worker who competes in those IASCA competitions.

Noise? No, not noise!!
After my recent install, if I have to deal with anything that causes noise again I'm going to take a hammer and smash it.

with my previous experience with fans, I would have to say that the computer type fan s WILL givce you some noise. Especially if you hook it up to the same power source of your amp!!
Another thing to check is the power wire gauge, sometimes a thicker wire (hence more curent flow) will keep the amp happier during hard playback. Another thing to consider is a stiffening cap, they work and are worth the money, onlyh 1 farad caps are worth it. I used to run 2 225-HCCA's at one ohm mono....the wire upgrade did marvels (gave me 2db's). hope this helps

At this point I think I will just buy a new amp and not worry about it. Too much trouble for an old amp. Thanks for all the help!!!
