Mobile PC installation questions
Mobile PC installation questions
whats up everyone....im new to the forums here.....but ive been lookin for some answers about a mobile PC...soooo here we go..
First and foremost (for my own reasons) i wanna keep the stock HU in place...."bla bla bla....but the stock HU sucks"...i dont care i just wanna keep it for principles (for now at least
)
My initial intention was to get MP3 playback in the car...Kenwood's Music Keg sits in the trunk and you gotta buy a separate modulator to have an interface....paired with a blitzsafe into the stock HU as a separate input, the install can get real costly for a player with no real customization options....
So i checked out the RIO empeg...a single din unit that does the same stuff, runs off linux and a standard laptop drive, went to a bunch of installers to see if they could remove that stupid tray (!?!?) above the stock HU and maybe "cut" into the board above for the AC controls to make room for this DIN unit.....NO LOVE
SOOOOOO....on to plan C....for maybe $50 more than the music keg...i found a pre-fabricated, trunk-mountable car PC setup at http://www.xenarcdirect.com/ ,,,,They make 3 systems, two are prefonfigured, and the third is barebones...with that I could just get all the parts at newegg and save some bucks.... for less than $800 i could realistically have all the bells and whistles of a full computer (using winamp to play MP3s...and loading full-screen PLUG-INS hehe ....playing divx movies without putting in the DVD! ....i could even finish that term paper with a wireless keyboard) OK im rambling a bit, but heres the problem.... i need an interface (obviously) to make all of this work...i'd prefer a touch screen to avoid having to use a mouse in my car, but thats minor as only a few exist. Does anyone have any ideas on where to put this damn screen, while keeping my pristine head unit?
Some of my ideas included:
- Motorized flip down 7" LCD (made by ICON, installs between both sunvisors, replacing the dome lights and the sunglasses compartment...dome lights are built into the unit itself...so thats a plus ....on the CON side, when flipped down, this unit almost completely covers the rear view mirror
- OK now im not even sure if this exists, but does anyone know of a retractable motorized screen that takes up only half the HEIGHT of a din (to fit in place of the removed tray assembly above the HU), or maybe even a place that could install a track onto the sides of a flush-mount display to make it slide out and pivot upward.
- NEXT....does anyone know about a double-din hybrid unit (w/ a full sized screen (flush) and in-dash changer underneath...or something of that nature (yes, if that exists, i just MIGHT remove my stock HU).
- And finally (also a bit extreme, but if i were to ignore the CD player completely and ONLY get the screen)..... take a look at this thread: http://www.acura-tl.com/forum/showth...threadid=48096 . Assuming that there is only ONE single opening (not divided) when removing the stock HU and that tray above, what is the largest size screen I could fit flush, utilizing as much dash space as possible?
....so there you have it, my post consisting of close to 94 questions....anybody with successful mobile PC installs on acuras?....any answers/help would be appreciated!! thanx
