Putting things in cars requires them to have vibration and temperature ranges that desktop units just don't handle. Don't do it.

Puuuhlease....check out mp3car.com

I've lurked around there for quite a while now...people are rarely having vibration issues and heat problems are non-existent if you plan properly. As a matter of fact, some guys are using fanless CPUs, which are also very power efficient.

FYI...I'm ITL on that board as well.

Or maybe they're too embarrassed to mention that they screwed up by doing this. I know how often DVD drives freak in cars due to temp issues... and HDs are touchier. Hell, Apple says not to leave the iPod in your car, remember?

Do what you want, but temp and vibration/shock impact specs for hard drives are there for a reason. One of the reasons that the big CE suppliers havent moved farther in that direction is that they won't take the failure hits required.

I had a buddy at work from MIT put a full tower desktop compter in is 93 Grand Prix, his plate read M-PRIX3.

He designed a set of dampers for the HD's...never failed him yet.

He ran XP and a full LCD in the dash with a wireless keyboard...it was sweat for road trips...watch all the DVD's you want.

I'm in the process of putting a car pc into my 03 CL. Using the OEM Navi screen and vsokolov's navi-to-video converter, I'm hookin up a tiny pc made by MApower featuring the mini-itx M-1000 board, 256 MB RAM (for now), 60 GB 2.5" HD, USB 2.0 DVD in glove compartment, controlled by an RF ATI remote. I'm also gonna use an XM direct unit and rig up a serial cable so that I can have XM channel listings come up on the navi display using Frodoplayer. Like someone said above, check out www.mp3car.com. Cool stuff. I'll post some pics of the final product.

www.littlepc.com came way before Mac Mini, but as always, Apple's is prettier.
