Looking into Car alarm/Starter

Hello fellow acuraziners, I would appreciate some advice on some car alarm/starter devices. If it helps at all I own a 03 Acura Cl Type S MT

I recently walked through my local car electronic shop and they had a sale on the Python 872 and it definitely caught my eye. Now as I understand it Python and Viper are basically the same company, so I went about looking on Viper's website and the 5701 appears to be identical.

Viper:http://www.viper.com/Products/Produc...?ProductID=105
Python: http://www.pythoncarsecurity.com/pro...?ProductID=605

I figure I should invest in a car alarm before I invest too heavily into my vehicle so as to protect my investment. And while I'm doing the car alarm I would like to get a starter on as well.

My questions are,
Is the Python 872 a good buy?
Is there any difference between the Viper and the Python?

Anything that you would recommend over these two products?

Anyways the python is on sale for 250$ + 400 for install.

Let me know what you guy's think I'd appreciate it greatly.

honestly there is no difference. DEI (directed electronics) makes viper, python, clifford, etc. all of the alarms have the same wiring diagrams and features. only difference really is their remotes and who carries them

for instance, my work (best buy) carries ONLY viper
circuit city carries python & hornet
mom & pop shops might carry both as well as different brands

but i definitely recommend getting either Viper or Python with a 2way pager. that way when your alarm goes off, you can bolt out the door or call the cops quickly to get whoever is messing with your car

400 for install is VERY high for whoever is doing that.

alarm/keyless/remote start in your car from my work (viper 5701) would be an additional $150 (remote start interface immobilizer) + the cost of the alarm

Thanks for the quick reply.

400 seemed like a big price for install especially when one of the selling points was that the 5701/872 had substantially less install time. Maybe I'll look around at other installers and get some quotes. They said since my car was new and a standard it would be more expensive as they had to install a bypass.

Would you recommend this product for security?

From what I remember the package was that you got the two remotes plus the shock sensor and remote start for 250$. Does that sound about right?

Thanks Sig86.

whoa whoa. that's a big no no on putting remote starts on stick. i'm not saying it can't be done (i have a viper remote start on my 6speed). but it is against Circuit City/Best Buy SOP to install remote starts on a stick due to legality. the reason being, some people leave their cars in gear, if you remote start it the car will literally JUMP forward and when it stalls out, it will continue to try to start and jump. i'm sure if you google, there will be some accidents that will be found because of this. i always leave my car in neutral and anytime someone is working on it i tell them do NOT leave it in gear, the clutch is bypassed.

install on your car is roughly 4-4.5 hours by a certified installer

Sorry for the delay. Well I guess it's not a problem here in Canada as the shop I went to said they would do the bypass but it would cost more money. But thanks for the warning If I invest in it I'll definitely make sure to never leave it in gear, which I'm already accustomed to anyways. Thanks for the advice.

^this is if you install an alarm starter that is made for an automatic, if you get one that is for a manual, when you take the key out the car stays running, it will shut off/lock your car automatically when you close your door, this is to ensure that there is no way the car could be in gear. And i do have a Compustar alarm/remote starter on my first gen cl, and it works great.

Perhaps you guys could help him then by detailing which remote starters are geared toward manual cars? I certainly haven't heard of this before, but I've never had a remote start to know either.

please get a 2way if youre going to get a remote start or spend a fortune on an alarm. its invaluable to know what is going on with your car at all times. no second guessing if your car is started or not. or wondering if you locked you car or not.

i just checked it out, and it looks like most, if not all of the CompuStar alarms are manual transmission compatible. And if you are going to a store to purchase your alarm, then they'll tell you which ones will work and which ones won't. And yes do get a 2way alarm, it makes way more sense, for starting it in the winter time(so that you know it actually started), and just for making sure your car is locked(i check mine like 10 times daily). But if you know somebody that can buy/install the alarm for you, then go that route, it's waaay cheaper. I got mine for like half of what i would've paid in a store for it to be bought/installed by my buddy

I've had Viper remote starters on my car(s) and never had any problems with them. My suggestion is to stay away from CompuStar. its a hit and miss with these. I've had a few friends with CompuStar remote starters and about 1/2 of them had problems with it (mostly with the alarm portion - not the remote start).

just my 2 cents

i bought the clifford version of the viper 5701... (i forget the model number off the top of my head)

I think I paid around $200 for it, and will eventually install in myself. I have done a couple alarms in the past, and install is definitely one of the harder wiring jobs for a DIYer (as compared to installing audio equipment etc.), but not impossible

It IS a 2-way alarm, come with 2 remotes, one is a 1-way, one is a 2-way. I haven't gotten a chance to use it in the real world, but it just has LEDs that confirm lock/unlock/remotestart, etc. without having a big LCD screen. I had a viper 790 in the past, and although I never was broken into, I never really saw the point of having the big screen, and was kinda sick of people asking me if that was a phone and then laughing.

I haven't had really any problems with the DEI alarms. Just make sure they set the shock sensor up right, as to avoid false alarms. And consider adding additional sirens, maybe with backup batteries for additional security.

as far as manual transmissions, I believe they are all compatible. They should all have a neutral sensor, and I believe you also are required to activate the remote start system BEFORE you exit the car, so that you can start it again later. This maybe the system they are "bypassing"? There should be something about it in the owners or installation manual.

it's true that DEI makes viper, python, and clifford. however, the Viper is there top of the line.
