HU options?
HU options?
im thinking about dropping some cash on a system. now i like how the stock HU fills up the space as opposed to some other aftermarket ones that are thin and (IMO) look out of place b/c the display is too small and i like the 6CD in-dash. i would prefer to keep the stock HU but ive heard about problems with distortion and why spend all that money if it may infact sound worse? so if anyone knows what im rambling about and has any suggestions that'd be great.

thats hella sweet lookin, u know how much it usually goes for?
the 7301 goes for over $2000 retail...streeteffectz quoted me a price of $1680.....and i know right now on ebay there is one for sale for like $800..... but it is used.... but they way i look at it $1600 for a double din unit that will play cd, tapes and has a tft display on the front that can play movies is not to bad.... i know i have probably like $2000 in my pioneer equip that does basicly the same thing....
For about 2200 I went with a Kenwood KVT-911DVD and put all
my music collection into a Kenwood Digital Music player w/10GB cartridge.
The deck covers the whole double din space and is a touch screen
too. The sound is soooo much better than with the stock headunit.
So, I definetly recommend this setup....

ok i think ill just do HU(CD/DVD player)/components for now, and move on to subs later.
my question now is.....a good set of component speakers to replace all my bose ones, and what should i expect to pay for this?

For the components I would add an aftermarket amp. If you are
looking to save some money, get the JL 300/4 or Phoenix Gold
Tantrum 600.4, they run about 3-400bux. Components, I can only
speak for 3 brands: MB Quart, Boston Acoustics, and JL's. I've had
a chance to hear these components, and all 3 sound pretty good.
As far as pricing, do the search on then net, there are tons of money saving sites....
Good Luck!!!

I'm going to go against the grain on this one.
Assuming that you can't replace the entire system at once...
I think there will be a bigger difference in replacing the factory speakers and adding a sub than replacing the head unit. I would do all of the speakers first with a sub. That's the best 'bang for your buck' without a doubt.
Then in the future, if you don't think the stock head unit sounds good enough, you can replace it then.
This seems to be the logical thing to do since you like the look of the stock head unit anyway.
Those who say the stock head unit doesn't sound good haven't hooked it up to a good set of components. Be careful what you listen to on this board... there's a lot of bs.
This will ensure that you are able to spend the money on quality speakers (including the sub). This is the best investment you can make. I bought some MB Quart separates 10 years ago and still use them... and they sound just as good as the top of the line stuff these days.

I built the box using the 'golden rule' principal. It hits hard, but the sound quality is one of the best I've heard. It's always a gamble when you build your own enclosure as far as sound quality goes. This one turned out great. Couldn't be happier.
Some of the enclosures I've made in the past that focused on 'looking good' never sounded all that great. There were definite frequencies that didn't hit right... very obvious when playing a 500 to 10 hz tone sweep.
So this time, I first started with a design that would hopefully sound good, and then tried to make it look good second.
Thanks for the compliment!
Yip... sealed enclosure.
It has legs that hold the sub about 3" off the floor of the trunk. The 'legs' are on 3 sides of the box, leaving the side closest to the passenger compartment open.

I've had the aftermarket components and amps running with stock headunit for about six months, it sounded ok but nothing like the sound I get now with the new headunit....
If I had to do it over again, I would start with the headunit, components w/amp, and later add a sub w/amp....
