Head unit frequency response

I was wondering if anyone knows if the head unit is very good in its sound reproduction. Is the flat bose sound due to the speakers, amplifier, equalizer or head unit. Is it a combination of all of them.

The reason I ask is because I am keepiing my Hybrid Inspire/TL head unit but would like to know if adding an 4 channel amp with crossover and 2 or 3 way speakers, will enhance the sound significantly. Can you keep your Navi voice and bypass the equalizer?

Last question. Has anyone been able to put a free air sub that clears the bars that pop open the trunk or do you have any subwoofer recommendations that make you lose very little trunk space?
