free air sub

Can anyone recommend a good quality free-air sub that can be used to replace the stock sub? I plan on doing some modifications to the torsion bar so that I can mount a 10" sub in the stock location.

Thanks!

Well I successfully removed the bar runs under the sub location. Now my problem is that the hole is not wide enough to fit a 10". It seems that I need another 1/2" of space. I really don't want widen the hole so I think I'll try to mount the speaker from underneath. If anyone has any suggestions please feel free to let me know!!

Thanks!

Why don't you just put a RMB8 Kicker in there? It fits perfectly. I just did it recently. DO a search on and you'll find it.

The main reason I haven't done it yet is because the RMB8 is a mid-range bass driver. I'm looking for a true bass driver. I want a nice thump when I play it. I'm not looking for a chassis shaking thump but a really good deep thump. I don't think the RMB8 will give me that!

I wish you were local and I'll let you listen to mine. It sounds really good. Very deep bass (but not as strong as the JL 12w3 in a box I have had)..but hey, it's free air and only 8" comparing to the 12" JL.
Anyhow, I don't think you can find one true sub that is 2" mounting depth that would fit into that stock hole..trust me..I've spend hours and hours searching.

I'm no longer restricted by mounting depth. I removed the metal bar that runs across the stock sub location and I can comfortably fit any size sub in there. The torsion bars are not in the way! I am restricted to the diameter of the new sub, unless I make the stock hole bigger to accomodate a 10" or 12".

If mounting depth is not an issue then there are a few (not a lot) IB subs out there that available. Pioneer and Image Dynamics make some free air subs that sound pretty good. I have seem a member in this forum installed the Pioneer IB sub on stock location.

Check out the link here :

Cheers !!!

If you want a deep-playing sub and depth isn't an issue, then look at the JL Audio 10W7. However, I think you will soon realize you will have a depth problem.

David

P.S. Sorry...mainly being a smarta$$. I wanted to get one but it would almost reach the floor of the trunk.

The mounting depth isnt the problem with that sub, its the fact that it is not a free air, and would need a custom box built it you wanted to have it fire into the cabin.

Splitz:

You may be right. I am more familiar with the Image Dynamics IDMAX, which is the main competitor to the W7. The IDMAX is capable of being used freeair so I was assuming the W7 could also operate freeair. It actually might be able to. If only IDMAX came in other sizes besides 12".
