DVD-A Tips / Tricks / Help

I was looking for a thread on DVD-A burning and was suprised that there was not one already.

I just started researching the DVD-A formats and am trying to figure out what the best program is to burn a DVD-A.

A while ago a friend was telling me about a program that would upscale a mp3 to DVD-A .. I think he said it was called solo or something close to that.

Anyone have any info to add? it would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Jay

Enjoy high-resolution audio
CD resolution is 44kHz at 16 bit sample size. High-resolution is a combination of sampling rates higher than 88kHz and/or sample size of 24 bit.
Due to the additional amount of information used to represent the audio waves, high-resolution music is generally perceived as more precise with more warmth and stage presence. If you tend to find CD music as too harsh, then you will likely enjoy high-resolution audio.

To build a high-resolution DVD-Audio disc, you will need high-resolution audio material, i.e. from your own recording, from high-resolution download sites, from commercial sites or archives.

It can also be from upsampled CD quality material using Solo's built-in professional quality upsampling algorithm. Upsampling is the process of converting audio material to higher resolution (e.g. from 44kHz to 88kHz, 16 bit to 24 bit). Although upsampling does not not add new information to the music, it appears to allow a higher quality of rendering that, without upsampling, would require much more expensive equipments. This is the subject of considerable debate in the audio community, please refer to the following backgrounder links : why does high-resolution sound better, benefits of 96kHz sampling date, sampling rates and bit depth, filters.

DVD-Audio Solo's users have been praising the quality of its upsampling algorithm. Why don't you try for yourself and compare some of your favorite music, with and without upsampling.

Use in the car
Several car manufacturers now factory install audio systems supporting DVD-Audio, short list here. If you have to spend several hours in the car, a good audio system is a definite advantage.
Some audio experts have stated that "In some ways, the cabin of a sonically-insulated motor vehicle offers an ideal medium for DVD-Audio". Indeed, in a car environment, several features of DVD-Audio stand out :

  • surround to envelop the listener in a rich sound field
  • quality to take advantage of the high quality of the mid to high-end car systems
  • capacity to consolidate collections in a small space

DVD-Audio Solo has been extensively tested with audio car systems from Acura and Lexus and has many users in these communities.

Thanks B. Most of the posts I found were like 3 years old so I wanted to update.

I put in for the beta test for the Windows 7 version of Solo yet I got the older version to work on my Windows 7 machine.

I was able to do the same with NERO 9, it upsampled mp3's to AAC pretty much. Still the Solo programs DVD-A's were by far much better sound quality and a true DVD-A.

I used both Solo's remaster and then Ultra to burn the disc's.. ( Note - Both require an additional free add on - it walks you thru in the notes )

Anyone else using the new version? 2.6?
