Does Aftermarket Head Unit Work with Navi?

Hi,

I have 3000 dollars worth of stereo equip that I want to put in my 2000 Acura TL with Navi...

I believe it gets tricky because of the Navi... Car Toys has the kit for the double din dash mount because I have an Alpine hu and a digital Alpine EQ (Erag 320).

There are 2 routes to go...

1. Leave in the stock unit and use rca converters to hook up amps (erag)..

2. Gut the stock unit all together and replace everything.

I'll get to my question for the techs...

If I remove the stock head unit will it disable my Navigation Unit's audio and/or video? I can live without the audio prompts if I have to but the Video... I need the Visual display to work.

Sound quality might be worse by leaving the stock unit in and doing the converters (option 1) but, I don't know how much worse it would be than option 2.

Please let me know about the navi and if anyone has hooked amps to the stock unit (with aftermarket speakers of course).. plz let me know what it sounds like.

Yours Truly,

Jeremy

You will lose your voice prompts...but like me, I didnt care because I thought it was annoying anyway!

Get the stock unit out and replace everything!!!! It sounds like you want a real good system, not just an upgrade. You wont be happy if you keep the stock unit for many reasons...SQ and functionality for the main two.

Need Tech Advice

Does anyone know with experience for sure if the aftermarket head unit will let me keep the visual display working on my Navigation unit?

Also, will a little bass in the trunk mess it up?

What is the navi flashcard or flash memory? Mine is a dvd in my trunk... is that it?

do you have pics?

Did the installer have to do anything weird in order to keep the visual part of the navi working?

My navi...'99 isnt DVD. It looks like a hard drive out of your computer, but is removable. So I got a drive that is flash memory...like your digital camera, no moving parts. But the only reason I did that was my original hard drive disk basically got old and was very tempormental to temperature extremes in the summer. But subs wont hurt your machine at all.

I was turned away by some shops...cause they didnt know about the NAVI, like yourself. I found a local shop that the owner acutally has a '03 Type S, but w/o navi. We just decided to go for it, normally and unhook whatever we needed to to install the new unit. Turns out, the only thing that is connected with the stock HU and Navi system is the voice. EVERYTHING else works exactly the same so dont worry if you want a new HU - go for it.

what pics do you want? I have everything.

I hope my DVD NAVI is hooked up the same as your flashcard NAVI...

About the pics... bring em on... send me a link or just throw em on the post... I love pics... Your radio installation pics would be cool and your system...

Here is my HU and you can see the NAVI working. The shitty mounting plate was only temporary untill I got the Metra kit in, so it looks very nice now. I dont have my digital camera anymore so its not updated yet. And yes, your NAVI is hooked up exactly the same as mine. The '99-'03 NAVI's are interchangeable. I am looking to buy the DVD unit now to replace mine and it is just plug and play.

Back door component

Front door component

Capacitor mounted in the "ski hole"

Front panel of the box made around NAVI system. This works nice because I really dont use my trunk now, but when I do I will get it redone and make the space more useable. The sub box is pretty small... only 1.1cubic feet/sub. But we just got it to look clean.

Hey... Looks good... The installer guy said that I wouldn't need a capacitor... I only have a 400 watt amp and a 100 watt mono for my sub... and a radar detector that's extra on top of the navi...

Do you think I should get a Single Far or whatever capacitor... maybe a light one?

Ya it looks MUCH better now that I got the Metra dash kit and wet sanded it to make it match the rest of the stock plastic surrounding it. No you wont need a capacitor with that kind of power. I have 1100 watts RMS and I barely need it. I just didnt know about our stock electrical system and I got a real good deal on it. One thing is for sure, a capacitor will NOT hurt any. I kinda tested it by putting a bass cd in, turning both heated seats on, NAVI on, lights on and at idle, the reading on the Capacitor never went below 12.5 volts. So basically everything works perfectly even with the max load.

The rule of thumb is to get 1 farad/1000 watts of stereo. So you could if you want or they even make a 1/2 farad.

Really they are pretty much the same...I have Stinger, Rockford Fosgate makes them...Lightning Audio does, really not one to avoid that I know of. Just get one that you like. I guess I would recommend Stinger or Rockford.

This has already been answered, but for the DVD based Navigation system, the video is fed completely separetly from the audio. So if you pull the stock headunit and put in something else, the video for the NAVI will be completely uneffected.

You can maintain the NAVI voice prompts by buying a box like this one:

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-KWYvA6Z...600&I=469MPSS4

Only $37.99. I'm not sure how the audio from the NAVI hooks up, so you may need a line level to RCA converter as well.

You really only need the front speakers to be connected, unless you want the voice prompts to override the front and rear speakers. The NAVI should automatically send a 12v signal to the PIE box when it wants to talk.
