Custom dash kit ideas? ('01 TL)

Hi everybody,

I'm currently using a Metra kit in my 2001 TL, and would like to fabricate something that goes all the way up where the cd holder is. (for some reason the Metra kit doesn't go all the way up). I'd also like to get the HU out of the middle so there's a decent sized storage pocket.

Just wondering if anybody's done anything like that. (Maybe with fiberglass or something). I searched and saw a lot of threads about double-din dash kits, but nothing specific to what I'm trying to do.

Oh, and for those who haven't heard from me in a couple years... it took a long time to get wife approval to upgrade the system again. Latest upgrade is switching to dynaudios and custom crossovers.

:)

Are you talking about a double din dash kit? If so, there are plenty of people who have done that. Do a search on username UNCALD4 and you will see his work! I ordered my double din dash kit from him and I got a 6.5" touchscreen under my NAVI monitor!

He has posts all over the Audio/Video forum and in the Sponsored sales in the black market forum.

Maybe I am misunderstanding what you are trying to accomplish..dunno

I have done a custom kit that goes all the way up and replaces the pop-out pocket. The support and appearance of it is hard to match OEM. It can be done. And it can look good. But it would cost about $350 to fabricate. I do make a "flipped" single din kit. This puts the deck below the pocket. Here's a pic....

Hi.

CJITTY: No, I'm not after a double DIN, just wanting to do a better job than the Metra kit does. Replace the CD caddy, put the HU at the top or bottom, and have a full size storage pocket.

uncald4: Yeah, it sounds like a tremendous amount of work, and that price doesn't surprise me. I'm really wondering if there's something I could fab myself with my minimal glassing and/or woodworking skills. (Or if there's any alternatives to Metra that go all the way up to the climate control).

Got it done back in 2002 at a place called Ultimate Audio. They traced the dash unit out and made a MDF template and then added the wood.
