Check in with 6.5" replacements

Lots of TSXers are wanting to swap out their 6.5"s in the doors, including myself.

Check in with the speakers you took out, the speakers you used to replace, and whether they fit or not - including any modification they needed to make them fit.

This should provide assistance to us, because sites like Crutchfield dont have up to date info on what fits the TSX.

Swapped all 4 door speakers with the Polk EX365's.

I used some standard Honda/Acura connectors and some pre-made 1" spacers. I do have an issue of one of the dorr panels sitting not quite flush with the 1" spacer.

Other than that, nothing other than the standard speaker install.

So you hav not changed out the tweeters - just the 6.5s in the doors ? And it appears that the Polks you used may not be ideal for the cut outs as the spacers make the door panel stick out.

Thats an important tidbit

No, the spacers I used were too big. I used 1" spacers where 3/4" would have been ideal. But I couldn't find any so I said "screw it".

Spacers

Could probably buy 1-inch plastic spacers like those available by Scosche and shave them down to 3/4-inch on a belt sander or the like. This would bring the speaker protrusion down to an acceptable measurement where it won't interfere with the door panel trim.

Very nice, though I dont know whether I would have bored out the stock speaker grill like that. To each his own I guess. What did you power the type Rs with ? Stock, or did you install another amp.

Removal of at least part of the stock grill was necessary since I used spacers (front doors were not deep enough) to mount the speakers. I'm using stock amp now. I have a 10" test sub and I power that from an amp. I haven't quite finished with my speakers setup, but I'm very satisfied with the results so far.

i installed Polk db650's in all doors with 1/2" spacers.

1/2" spacer is rigth with a dynamat gasket on the door
and the rubber gasket that comes with the speakers,
it is the right spacing.

I love the sound, I'm a Polk convert.
I would like some tweeters if I knew what kind fit w/o
modifications.

4 speakers were $150, an audio shop made the spacers
for $35, dynamat was $35. Screws at Lowes about $5.

Circuit City has buy one get one half off on Polk.

I'm getting excelling bass from the back and highs
from the fronts, I really don't need anything more now
but some top quality silk dome tweets might interest me.

I used the same speakers, without cutting the door grill. I don't recommend the Type R, however. It's lots of work to fit it in, and the sound is not the best for nearly $200. I'm specially disappointed by the tweeters, which have a very metallic sound. I have to set the treble at -1 or -2 to clear it out. The woofers are very good, but mids are a little weak.

To each their own. I really like the Type-R sound. Also, I wanted to use the grill to show off the speakers. I did not pay 200 for the speakers though..that's like retail price! I recommend listening to the speakers at an audio store before making a purchase. Everyone has different taste in speakers.

They were $185+tax.

Regarding the mettallic sound, I found out that by adjusting the settings on the crossovers to -6db, the tweeters sound much better. I had that done yesterday and the sound now is much better than the default setting.

I agree about listening to the speakers in a store. Buying w/o first experiencing the sound is a really bad idea.

Audio Plan in the Making... Suggestions?

This is my current audio plan in the making:

Any suggestions?

Components...

Replace OEM Amp: TBD (6 Ch or 4 Ch Amp? 50w to 100w RMS per Ch? Location?)

Front Doors: Polk db6500 6.5" MidBass & Tweeter set w/foam baffle

Rear Doors: TBD (6.5" MidBass only - No coaxial Please! Maybe a 6.5" from a db6500 set?) w/foam baffle

Rear Deck: Polk db6500 6.5" MidBass & Tweeter set on 6x9" Adapter Plate w/foam baffle

Trunk: TBD (Infinity BassLink? Small Custom Box w/integrated Amp? - preferably lightweight/removable)

Thanks in advance on all your input.

Last night I installed Alpine SPS170A in the front doors, I will do the rear doors on Saturday. Sounds great, and I got the for $40 a piece on EBAY. Ikesound.com are good people.

I am pretty happy with replacing the speakers and my sub. I dont know that it could sound any better, so I guess I am done !
