The 2001 CLS has a in dash CD changer I know but is there a way to add on an external changer to this as well?

Yes, there is a plug in back of head unit for a changer. I called Crutchfield & they carry one for the CL, but I didn't inquire as to manufacturer or price.

You can also call Bose (if you are so inclined, here is the link to them and their FAQ):

One of the questions concerns adding a changer:

"A) Can I add a CD player or changer? Yes, in most cases. When we work with a car company to design a music system, provision for adding CD capability is almost always included. To discover which CD players and/or changers will work best in your car, contact your dealer. If you’re not sure whether the option of adding a CD player or changer was specified for your car by the manufacturer, call us at the number at the bottom of this page....

I have heard good things about Crutchfield, so you are on a good track...

Good luck
