Can't be Real

Upon reading everything - it seems like it just adds distortion to give the illusion of the bass being there.

It's real - we've used it and it works EXTREMELY well. Does not add distortion AT ALL

There are different versions.

The DEI made version (PPI or Orion) doesn't sound as good as the Maxxbass one. S/E uses the Maxxbass one.

I ahve some of the PPI models and I haven't used any in cars yet - they are in the board and I am not too happy with how the PPI version sounds in the board. The Maxxbass rep says that the DEI version wasn't executed well.

And their manual is smoking crack - it takes some experimentation to get the settings right.

So you would actually recommend using these?

That webpage sounds like a complete scam.

"Make your single 8" sound like a 15"!!!"

There's a technology that is installed with the Windows Media Player that you can also get in various devices called "SRS". Part of it is called "TruBass" and it messes with the frequencies in order to give you the impression of, well, louder bass. (Sounds as if it is the same kind of thing that y'all are talking about.) It sounds pretty good, but it is an effect. Either you like it or you don't. I bought a cheap unit (an external box sold as intended for MP3 players or computers) and hooked it up to a car before the amp, and it just didn't sound all that great to me, but I was evaluating the surround-sound effect more than the bass. Although, a unit with better components probably would be better. Still, any time you have this kind of processing of sound it often sounds processed. Although, I do think I turned TruBass on for my MP3 player. :-)

TruBass does give the impression of more bass. So, I would guess that this probably would as well.

Meanwhile, I was completely happy with the bass produced from my 8" sub without any processing. It's amazing what you can do. What you can't do is p!$$ off your neighbors on the next block, just next door. So what do you need a 15" for anyway?

I've used it and talked to guys from maxxsonics or whatever it is before I left car audio and the story for it is that it essentially tricks the speaker into playing an octave lower than it would without it. As for distortion it doesn't add anymore distortion than what is there normally. Mainly in talking to the guys there it is best suited for trucks and cars that can't/won't add a sub. It can take a mediocre pair of comps and make them sound like a great 3 way. I'm not saying i would buy it, as I would rather avoid having to trick my speakers into doing what I want in that manner, but I can see a great market for it and it does work as good as advertised.

The concept of the missing fundamental is pretty cool.

I don'tthink the process adds noise, but I think the implementation of the IC can... and does in the PPI version.

It's signal is at 40hz.
That's way to low for me. I'm at 90hz. I want my speakers to last.

It doesn't seem that there is any speaker trickery involved at all, it's all psychoacoustic trickery - it pulls a fast one on the brain.

Is this something like that Epicenter that Audio Control made? Seems like the same type product.

it is real

i sell and have used the maxxbass processors. they are really pretty amazing. one thing you have to realize is that is will not make you 6.5's sound like 12's but it can drastically improve the midbass performance of a smaller speaker without damaging them. it sounds really similar to having the bass adjustment on you deck turned up but it doesn't make them distort or have issues with blowing. i have a customer with a tahoe that wanted some more bass but couldn't live with having a box in the back and didn't want to spend the money for me to build an enclosure into the rear side panel. i sold him one of these processors and it was exactly what he was looking for. like i said, it didn't make his 6.5's have lots of really low bass that you can feel, but it did give a lot more midbass which really improved the sound of the system, before i installed the processor he had blown 2 of his speakers, since i installed, he hasn't blown one yet in since sept 2004. you can also use the processor on your subs to improve the performance and sound quality of them. i listened to a regular cab ford pickup that had a 12 in the console, the maxxbass processor made the sub sound like it was in the middle of the dash.
