Bose?

i have the bose system in my 01 tl and going to hook up 2 12" alpine type R's with a 2000 watt amp but will the bose speakers handle it? and is there any special wiring to be done since its the bose and already has the sub?

You adding an amp wont effect the speakers. Youll need a line out converter and i would disconnect the factory sub, even remove it so itll open up the rear deck. I herd that you need to put a piece of cloth or something over the hole so the brake light doesnt shine through

Truth, Jimmay.

Also, OP, the DIY articles on the front page of the 2nd gen subforum have what you need.

The stock bose 6.5"'s distort like crazy once they start being pushed. With the factory hu it isn't as noticeable because the sq and power isn't on the same level as most aftermarket hu's. I put 2 12W3V3-4's in a custom made ported box with a 500/1 and Pioneer deck. Once I did this the speakers just weren't close to holding up and constantly distorting. I was already planning on getting some Focal's but i bought them the next day I just couldn't listen to the bose suffer anymore. So it just depends on how critical you are of your sq.

As far as the stock sub I have been contemplating taking it out, but I have more than enough bass (it even cracked the rear glass) so I haven't done it yet. Make sure you do disconnect the factory sub amp though otherwise the stock sub will still make noise which is very annoying. The amp is behind the back seat on the passenger side very easy to remove.

The stock speakers need a crossover point around 80hz HP if you want to keep them alive. They can handle a lot if you curtail their excursion profile.

I started with the crossover at 80 Hz and that wasn't working, so then I went up to 100 Hz that was a little better but I still couldn't take it. No matter what volume they play at they still don't have good highs and is exacerbated when you crank it.

Oh yes, I didn't explain that properly. I was just talking about the excursion profile. At the high end, you can use an active crossover point of about 3k, and install A-pillar tweeters to pick those frequencies up. I agree, the factory speakers can't do high frequencies, but that's the case of any 6.5" driver placed in the door. Heavy beaming occurs on a large driver in the door, and all sorts of interference and distortion patterns result.

I used $8 Dayton ND20FA tweeters in my A-pillar. Processing w/ DSP, active crossover, and time alignment, and I can tell you that my front stage sounds better than most of the high end audio setups I've cobbled together in the past. Did I get lucky? <shrugs>. Its all in the tuning, IMO. A strong sub stage is easy to pull off, integrating it into a good sounding front stage is where the magic happens. It need not be expensive, except of course you will need a processor.

You don't just add a sub to an existing setup.

Seriously are you using the stock Bose sub and the Alpine sub at the same time?
