Unhappy Blown Sub

I have two 12" JL W6 in a JL bandpass, but I blew one today somehow...I read on some random site that JL will re-fit the sub for you for a small fee, but I am wondering if it will be worth it (will the fix last; if so, for how long, sound quality, etc.). If anyone has ever been through this situation, please advise. My new set-up doesn't quite sound the same without my bump, and since the 2nd gen CL doesn't have a factory sub, the loss of my lows is considerably noticable.

I've had the speakers for a few years, but they've been in a closet for the last year or so. Maybe it was the amp, I dunno...but I gotta do something. I just moved to ATL from Bmore, so I don't exactly know anybody to ask face-to-face, so I'll rely on my trusty 'Ziners who always have good info. Thanx in advance!

They replace all the soft parts, so the sub is pretty much brand new when you get it back. It is definitely worth it, especially on a sub of that caliber. Go to your local JL dealer and they should be able to send it in for you and give you pricing.

After you get it back, make sure the gain on the amplifier is set correctly and the bass boost on the amp and head unit are turned off. If you don't know how to do this then have the JL dealer tune the system for you. That way this doesn't happen again.

I never used the bass boost on either because it made the sound too distorted for my tastes. I like the added effect of the subs, but not really going for an overpowering bassline. I have everything on the amp set for optimum performance. I am wondering if leaving those things in a closet for a year and a half was the culprit? I shouldve sold em when I had the chance. Thinking 12" Solo L7s now...

Thanks for the input Steven!

Having it rebuilt by JL is the only way to go, you will essentially get a new sub. When you say "I have everything on the amp set for optimum performance" I'm not entirely sure what you mean, but perhaps you have the gain too high or the frequency on too high of a pitch? I would double check your settings and perhaps back down the gain if it is aggressive. Just a couple thoughts

If you like the SQ of the W6's, going to L7s would probably piss you off. L7's sound like garbage, especially compared to something like a W6... Just a heads up before you think about making the switch...

The only damage I've seen from storage is when the sub is dropped and the glues holding the magnet and top plate fail. But it is pretty obvious because the cone won't move due to the voice coil being pinched between the pole piece and magnet.

No, if you had thermal or mechanical failure, then it had to be caused by improper settings, improper system design, or turning the volume up too high.

And Mattastick is absolutely correct about the differences between the W6 and L7.

That could have very well been it. Only one of them blew, and it was the one closest to the terminals. The whole thing didn't come apart, just a quarter of the rim around the speaker. And I think it happened after my daughter was in there playing around and started pushing buttons on my remote. I hit mute as soon as the bass hit, but the damage must've already been done.

I'm going to take you two's advice on the solos. Heard about them, but never personally saw them applied how I run my set-up. Its not designed for maximum bass, just maximum SQ all around (lows, mids, and highs). The W7s are a bit pricey, especially when I have these 6s already. You both just saved me like a stack! I thank you both kindly!
