This may sound like a strange question but has anyone here replaced their GPS - while keeping their current screen?

I have a 2001 TL with GPS. I'm not excited about the current TLs. I'll either wait for the next gen TL or the next gen 350. My car still is great but the GPS is painfully slow and now starting to have issues where it restarts while I'm driving. I was curious if it was possible to replace it with a hard drive GPS without tearing apart the dash.
