alpine type S vs Type R 6x9
none. I'd get MB Quartz or Boston Acoustic. MB quart are known for their tweeters and i've had both before. I love both. Alpine, ehhh .. they're ok. Bit over rated. Unless you got the cash to fork up 6k for a set of component set from alpine f1 status then i recomend alpine! Check out www.onlinecarstereo.com they have some good stuff.
6x9's ARE NOT SUBWOOFERS, as SO many others have explained to you. And your WRONG thinking 6x9's only produce low freq's. The 6x9's in the TSX only have low freq's sent to them, regulated by the amp
The type R's can produce 48Hz – 30kHz, and I dont know why you would even consider these since you wouldnt even use 3/4's of the features. But hey, its your money to waste.

that being said....i'm getting a pair of alpines....just wasnt sure which ones
some people have told me that the R's give MORE BASS than the S's reguardless of the "numbers" that are given for them.

I am talking bass here boys....

2 6x9s might have more surface area than a single ten, but it wont produce nearly the same kind of output. the cones of 6x9s cant move very far.

It is possible to get more output from 2 8" woofers, or 2 6x9" woofers, than from one 10" woofer, ALL THINGS BEING EQUAL.
But they're not equal.
First off, the 6x9's are free-air, both in their actual installation and in their design intent. This is also called "infinite baffle". What this theoretically means is that there is infinite volume behind the speaker, and so the air pressure behind the speaker does not act as part of the speaker's suspension, and does not help out. Speaker designs that use small sealed enclosures as part of the suspension are called "acoustic suspension" desings.
If you were using a 10" that was DESIGNED for free-air and INSTALLING it in free air, then the 6x9's MIGHT be louder, IF the single 10" was receiving exactly the same amount of power (and the effeciencies were the same). If the same amp is used, and a 4 Ohm 10" is used, bridging the amp usually results in 2X the power increase, and so there is a 3dB increase in the output volume for the 10" compared to the stereo installation of two 4 ohm 6x9's. Of course, these fictional 6x9's would have to have the same linear travel xmax as the 10" (or very close to it) to come close to realizing this theoretical benefit. Since your 6x9's have tweeters in front, if they came close to traveling as far as a 10" woofer can, the cone would probably strike the back of the tweeter as the spider ripped loose from the frame.
But comparing a sealed-box 10" to two free-air 6x9's, and saying the 6x9's can play louder than the sealed-box 10", is in incorrect and ignorant statment. I have two MB Quart 6x9's in my TSX, running off of 150W, and there is NO WAY they come close to 150W on one sealed JL 10W0 (like the one in joerckt's car!) Not in frequency response, not in volume, not in sound quality (which, by the way, is the diff between volume of bass and GOOD bass. You refer to GOOD bass in the quote above, but I seriously am in doubt that you know what it is...)
Now we have entered the topic in which you can actually hold your own... what you think.
If 6x9's off of the factory amp satisfy your bass requirements and negate your interest in a real subwoofer, I think you just demonstrated the truth in my statement that you don't know what good bass is.

In addition to what El said, it's not correct to say because 2 full range 6x9s have a certain surface area they make better subwoofers then 2 similar or lesser surface area round subwoofers... It's very easy for 1 8" or 10" to outperform 2 6x9s...
