Alpine purchased by Audiovox?

Just read in the Wall Street Journal this morning that Audiovox Corporation of Hauppage NY has purchased the car audio assets of ALPS Electronics of Japan, namely, Alpine.

"The first change we'll make is to get rid of all head units above $149 MSRP", said Tom Malone, president of Audiovox Electronics. "The real fat part of the volume curve is between $89 and $149, according to our market research".

The cause for the surprising acquisition seems to have been somewhat obscure. "For 2005, we dropped some input filtering circuitry on many of our amps" an anonymous Alpine insider stated. "Acura buyers stopped using our amps, and the next thing you know, sales are down and we're getting Audiovox-silkscreened Beefy-T's in the mail".

So they want to stop selling HU above $150 because they make more money selling cheaper HU? Sounds like an AudioVox type of move to me.

Just think how awsome that Audiovox amp would have sounded on Emerson speakers.
