'99 tape deck/adapter sound trouble

Hello, I'm new to the forums but I was hoping someone might have a solution.

I connect my phone and/or iPod using a tape adapter that either plugs into the iPod's headphone jack, or my phone's car mount input. My issue is I get a static sound and almost no bass (the static is really what concerns me). I have tested multiple tape adapters and the same issue is present on all of these. These adapters work fine in a friend's car with great sound. I've tried cleaning the tape head unit with a cleaning solution and adapter with no luck. I've also tried playing a regular tape and the sound is great. It only occurs when I use a tape adapter.

I called a local audio shop and he said my amp was probably blown, and I'd have to replace the head unit and speakers.

I don't want to go this route, because CDs and radio sound fine. Even tapes sound fine. It's just the adapter.

This is a stock bose system. Any help is appreciated!

Your best bet is to install a USA Spec iPod interface. Sound quality will be cd quality and you can control the tracks with steering wheel controls.

Been looking at those to hook into the cd changer port. Something like this?

Am I correct in assuming the guy at the audio shop was jerking me around? Doesn't make sense to say my amp is blown when the CD sound quality is fine. Any ideas on why the tape adapters are reacting the way they are?

If the amp was blown everything would sound badly like you said. Possibly your tape deck is dirty. Cassette tapes are a far gone technology so it's not surprising if the tape deck goes. I'm happy w the iPod interface. It works very well.
