Quick preview of my system project
Well, I plan to run the preamp from the stock deck into a Zapco DSP6-SL but I didn't want to cut anything...so...
Made up a harness that plugs into the stock amp input harness in the kick and soldered on F/R/S/C RCA cables.
All HFL and NAV audio is switched through the h/u not the amp. Tested by plugging in a small amplified speaker:
More details and pics as I progress...

Back up, this is exactly what I need - I dont know anything about the harness you speak of. What is it and where do I get it?

it is the female 20 pin in the pic. It all comes as 1 so I also have a 20 pin male and a PXAMG ipod cable if anyone needs one

I've been looking for this for six months. How did you know that the PGHDD2 harness connector would work.
I agree with you that splicing into the factory wire harness is a bad idea. I ordered a connector harness from one of the online install sites that was the wrong size. I already have one of the PGHDD2 harness in my trunk; I only wish I would have know that this was the correct connector sooner.
Thanks for the find!

I work at a shop and had been waiting for the PGHHD2/PXAMG or the USA Spec PA-15ACUxl ipod interface option ever since I bought the car back in April.
I installed the PA15 when it came out and didn't think anything of it. (knowing what my long term plans were for the system).
Had to take the car in for service on the NAV-DVD drive and pulled the PA15 out just b/c I didn't want to deal w/ the dealer saying that caused the problem.
Well I had the PA15 sitting in the pass. seat to go back in when I took the amp harness out to figure out the pin out and realized the connector was very familiar. Reached up to the seat, grabbed the harness and found that is plugs into the amp as well as the XM box. I then realized the PGHHD2 plugged into the XM box the same way as the PA15 so the harness must be the same, plus the PGHHD2 is available by itself w/o having to have to get the whole ipod interface.

That's a great story. I'm going to be splicing symbilink cables onto the PGHHD2 cable and running these to some DC amps.
Thanks for writting this up and posting.

I bought way to much stuff for my car,

I would still prefer to re-pin the harness. A clean audio signal depends on as little resistance as possible in it's path. By re-pinning the harness I could eliminate any solder points or butted connections between the harness and RCA connection. The result would be an unrestricted path with no weak point.
Depending on the outcome of a solid harness I would definitely offer compensation for your hard work and ingenious idea.

Hey Diamond Joe,
I got a cable from Uncald4 and I'm starting to wire up come symbilink connectors. I ran into a problem; pin number 5 on the female connector is missing. Does your connector have all of the pins on the top row? I think this pin is for the center channel + signal. Because the TL audio outputs are balanced when you used the speaker as a tester I'm guessing that the (-) signal was sufficient to drive the speaker. Did you notice if the output volume for the center channel was lower than the other speakers?
If Travis reads this; is there a way to move one of the unused pins to position 6?
Thanks,

Don't you feel stupid when you answer your own questions.
Yes you can move one of the unused pins to position 5; it's really easy. The connector shell has a catch that you push away from the pin to release the pin. The wire slides out very easily.
I'm now back in business and wiring up my symbilink connectors.

Just finished making my harness adapter:
Thanks to DiamondJoe and Travis
I wasn't too bad but I highly recommend getting the mini DIN6 connectors with crimp adapters. I got mine from DigiKey.
As I posted earlier it was pretty easy to rearrange the pin configuration on the 20pin connector once I found the release catch. I have all but one of the connections that are in the stock connector; the amp mute connection. Does anyone know what that actually does? I thought I've read that all processing for the HFL and nav voice are accomplished in the HU so I can't figure out what this signal actually does when sent to the amp?
Now all I have to do is finish my amp rack and it's install time.

..
Does anyone know where I can get a plug which connects to the output connector on the stock amp. I want to catch the signal after the amp and use a Rockford 3sixty.1 to switch the signal to RCA

05 TL A-Spec
Sorry for my ignorance but what Exactly does this piece allow you to do or what purpose does it serve? Not being a smart ass just trying to gather as much info as I can to find out the best way to install a system in my 05 TL while keeping the stock deck and speakers.

preamp is cleaner and closer to source
you don't amp it (in the stock amp) and then remove the amplification with the LOC only amplify it again with an aftermarket amp
it allows you to bypass stock amp and thus have less equipment in the chain
all amps take pre-amp, but not all work well with balanced input
search for someone hooking up an amp directly to the HU, to find out which ones work for sure
