Replace Search bar with Google Custom Search Engine

I don't use the search bar in the top right at all. It's completely and utterly useless. I always just go to google and use site:acurazine.com suffix at the end of it. It seems counter-intuitive that in order to best search the site I'm on, I should go onto another site and use it to search the site I came from. Has this been discussed at IB at all?

We don't have any immediate plans to change the default search box, but we offer Google's custom search as one of the three "display" options on the result screen. Once you type in your term and hit search, look towards the top left of the results and three options are shown: Web & Images, Threads, and Posts. The latter two are vB's built-in search, while "Web & Images" is a Google custom search.

That's great, Anyway to make that the default display option? The vBulletin options are total garbage..

Example: I'm looking for the infamous 3rd Gen TL Pressure Switch DIY, so as a noob, i go and type in "pressure switch" to the search and get this:

The first 10 threads have nothing to do with it at all!

Meanwhile:

All 10 of these are relevant.. And #1 is the one I want!

I'd love to see the default set as google custom search. I hate the other search, just frustrating trying to use it. If you can't make it the default for everyone, can you make it a user setting so we can set the default?

Great idea.. not sure if that's something that can be set in vBulletin's User Control panel though..

I didn't initially realize this, but we actually offer a way to select the Google results without even needing to jump to the result screen first. You can change the "Threads" option to the left of the search box to "All," which will then automatically send you to a Google custom search once you enter your search term. Right now, it will default back to "Thread" after your search, but if the demand is there, I can see if we can set it to remember your last search preference (All, Thread, or Post),

Thanks!

I think this would be a great tool. I use Google to search for anything. Using the search tool thru here you have to do A LOT of digging to find what you need. Google, 9 out of 10 times, will have your answer in the first couple results. I would vote for the change, but then would have to remember it is there since I have used Google searches for so long I don't bother using this one anymore.

Great suggestion ladyboi!

Hey @IB Jason

I noticed recently you guys finally have a "Google Search" option in addition to Threads and Posts in the internal search bar. THANK YOU..

Now can you just default to it so I can stop telling people to go to Google.

Look at the quality of search results at the two and tell me why defaulting to threads is a better idea..

Threads:

embedded Google Search:

At the very least, can you make it user-configurable?

I think your idea of making it a user configurable option to choose Google over the default vB search just might work. I'll bring the suggestion to our product development team to see what we can do.

Thanks!

Search works great .... If you know exactly what you're looking for, and where it's at.
