I had mine done this morning. Jerl's Muffler shop in Riverside took care of it. These guys only do custom work with stainless steel. Once I told them what I wanted I was in and out in 45 minutes. I asked them what else would benefit my TL. Brian said he could install a dual magnaflow set-up for $300.00 and give around 10 extra HP. Maybe later. Right now I am very satisfied with the sound and from what I understand it can only get better. I don't feel any loss of power in the bottom range, as a matter of fact I feel like the car is breathing easier through the mid range.

Is it possible for the tone to become quieter over time? Or maybe I'm just getting used to it now and not noticing it as much?

Question for the guys with magnaflow mufflers .... what was the price for installing them? I'm getting 2 Magnaflow Part # 11225 delivered tomorrow and I was hoping to slap them on same day retaining the stock tips of course. Jus trying to get an idea of the cost before calling around to get quotes of who would do it for the best price. Thanks guys

PS - I'm the guy with the deleted mid muffler and resonator - I'm looking to c how it will sound with teh magnaflows b4 deciding whether or not to put back the stock resonator. It does rasp at abt 2.5k rpms but everyone who's heard it says it sounds badda$$ so we'll see.

I got mine installed for $60. It might be a bit more since you are installing 2 mufflers but I believe $100 for the install for both of them seems like the maximum I would pay.

I went ahead and ordered the Dynomax resonator (24215).

This is a 12inch resonator, about 2 inches shorter than the magnaflow, but its is also smaller in total diameter, so it should dampen the sound a little less.

I will be getting that installed hopefully by the end of this week along with the quad tips, I'll see how that turns out.

I paid $150 for both mufflers installed, resonator taken out and Magnaflow put in, mid muffler removed and straight pipe installed, and pushed the stock tips out about 1". Took about 2 hours- BS'd with the guy, looking at his collection of old mustangs and his Kurt Busch Grand National car.

Compilation of all stages of exhaust resonator modification.

So I took the time and made this post so all of the new people don't have to go through 20 pages of discussion.

So far, there are 4 stages of this exhaust mod.

Stage 1.
Least noticeable in exhaust note increase.
Configuration:
Stock exhaust.
Remove mid-muffler. Replace with 2.5" straight pipe. Everything else remains stock.
Cost: Can be anywhere from $30-$60 w/aluminized pipping.

Stage 2.
A tad louder than stage one, a bit more pronounced tone.
Configuration:
Stock exhaust.
Remove mid-muffler. Replace with 2.5" straight pipe.
Remove stock resonator. Replace with Magnaflow resonator part# 10416.
Magnaflow resonator is a 14" long resonator, which dampens and changes the note of the stock exhaust a bit more, thus you get a bit more loudness/tone.
Cost: Magnaflow resonator costs around $60. Install ranges from $60 -$90 w/ aluminized pipping.

Stage 3.

(Tone result TBA)
Stock exhaust.
Remove mid-muffler. Replace with 2.5" straight pipe.
Remove stock resonator. Replace with Dynomax resonator part# WLK-24215.
Dynomax resonator is a 12" long resonator, which is a bit shorter and less dampening than the magnaflow resonator, thus it should give you a bit more loudness/tone than stage 2.
Cost: Dynomax resonator costs around $40. Install ranges from $60 - $90 w/aluminized pipping.

Stage 4.
Loudest setup out of all 3. Has a bit of a rasp, similar to M3 exhaust setup.
Stock exhaust.
Remove Mid-muffler. Replace with a 2.5" straight pipe.
Remove stock resonator. Replace with a 2.5" straight pipe.
Cost: Can be anywhere from $40 - $60.

Note: If you live in a climate that is prone to rain, snow, rust, Stainless steel pipping is highly recommended.
This also does not prevent you from passing smog, as it does not alter the characteristics of the catalytic converters, but it does not mean that this is street legal either as it does alter the stock setup of the exhaust.

I've got stage 3 done, will post some sound clips in a week or two after the resonator has broken in.

So far the sound is exactly where I want it to be, and I hope it only gets better after it breaks in.

Automatics

Has anyone made these mods to a TL with an auto tranny? Does it sound the same, or do you get that automatic tranny whine? I believe the cars in the clips are all manual, right?

Thanks!

I believe a lot of people have automatics, and it will be just the same, except you have less control over the sweet spot unless its in sports mode.

Yea that stage 4 is my car. No leaks on there fer sure. It does sound raspy at abt 2.5k - I don't hear it at all from inside the car but all the car buffs I know who've heard it say it sounds awesome. But I guarantee you its nod a mod for everyone. Of course with the 6MT its more controllable. I might be able to get another sound clip up b4 I get my Magnaflow mufflers installed this weekend hopefully. I had the Stage 1 b4 but it wasn't loud enough so I skipped to Stage 3. I like it but want it a lil deeper and I think the 11225s will bring that out real well. I'll also post clips of that when its done.

Can you please try to record one inside the car, as well as taking off and cruising? Usually the tone sounds a bit different with load on the engine.

s0leheir , I was wondering if all you did was the mid-muffler delete because so far your sound clip on YouTube sounds the most appealing! Let me know, and clear your PM's, your inbox is full!!!

It's interesting. I really like the sound of the stage 2 revvng part 2, but not from the stage 2 revving part 1 (it kinda sounded like a civic with a fart can). Also, I would love to hear a longer, more in depth clip of the stage 2 inside the car, possibly while driving. I am also very excited to hear impressions and the clip of "stage 3".

That's what I figured. I know it's hard to capture the true sound in a video clip. Is it really that loud when starting it up though? Sounded a bit too raspy even at idle, or is that just the way it sounds in the clip?

Has anyone cut open the mid-muffler to see what is looks like inside. If yes are there photos posted (similar to the normal muffler - see attached link)?

yea i had sage 4 done first and then stage 2.....stage 4 was too ricey if u ask me. it sounded like a civic with a cheapo huge wannabe exhaust. i thught it downgraded the car. especailly wen it hits a certain rpm, the rhasp kicked in which madew it even worse, wen you turn it on it sounds nice.

i really am waiting for those sage 3 sound clips....urgh...the day i hear it , if i like it, ima get ti right away.....hehehe....

I'd like to thank you all of you for the great idea. (cheap mod)
I had mine done today and over paid ($120). The Meinekei? shop replaced OEM resonator with Magnaflow #10416 ( paid $47.00), removed mid muffer and replaced with straight pipe.

Sound great at 2.5K -3K. I wish that could be louder but I do not want to upset wife and getting ticket from cops.

Thanks again

When starting it up it is loud. It mellows down to a throaty hum after abt 1 minute when the rpms go below 1K. Mind you, the video was taken with the camera abt a foot away from the driver's side muffler. Thats why it sounds so loud. I'm still trying to borrow a digicam to take another soundclip inside and driving by. Was gonna install my magnaflows today but all these bogus shops around here say they are too big - it can't be done unless the cans are smaller. Dang am pissed! but on the flip side, I installed my Comptech SS today and that kinda offset the disappointment in not getting the mufflers done.

I'll post a clip as soon as I can make one.

personally i think the 2nd stage sounds somewhat like the G, but Sedan... it doesn't sound "Hollow" enough.... waiting for 3rd stage... and aznbo187 good thinking with the *note* about using stainless steel =) i do live in Toronto, Canada. Good amount of snow there every year....

but guys.. you know what's missing? the sound of a BOV lol!!!

can someone post a clip of the modded exhaust + CAI? i wonder how the mix would sound outside the car...

even though we can't get the "Sweeesssh" sound of a BOV but at least from what i heard before, some CAI sounds like the turbine sucking air!
