Transitioning from Acura/Honda to Audi

Folks sitting in the middle of the backseat have the best view but they don't get a say in what car I get.

I think it would be easier if you learned to use it from the start. For me, I drive a company car for 8hrs/day that has a console shifter, then I get into my TLX and it takes a moment to switch gears...pun intended. I prefer the console shifter because it feels more natural, but the push button method gets the job done. I'd have a bigger issue with the 2G True Touch pad since the driver still has to use normal mouse pad movements in Carplay or Android Auto.

The top of the round controller is a PC like touch pad & don't remember ever using it in 5 or 6 years. Either touch the main screen or use the dial to navigate the system.

I used to think this was a generational thing but it boils down to user preference - just like subjective audio quality from high-end speakers vs low-end speakers.

I think the best user interface is the dial/touch screen combo. The dial is easier to use vs. a touch pad, and we've all been indoctrinated into the use of touch screens.

I've been trying to find the perfect 2018 Audi S5 Sportback for the past few weeks myself but am nervous about the maintenance costs on the Audi. Apparently Audi uses brake rotors that are so thin that they cannot be resurfaced and have to be replaced every time the pads are changed, which is typically 25K-35K miles from what I've seen. And at a cost of $1500/axle, that's 2-3X what I'm accustomed to. The S5 is incredibly fast and had some amazing technology even in 2018 that Acura doesn't offer and won't offer on the ASPECs not Type S'.

Beautiful car, but I'm gonna be honest. I'm an Audi Driver and having experienced them over the past 9 years they are a great car, but........ you should have gotten the S5. So much more fun with the extra power, but of course that is just my opinion. I just sold me 2018 S6 and my son says he misses it, gotta say so do I.

Power-folding-mirrors are not included in 2021 Acura TLX Tech-Package
For us, Power-Folding-Mirrors became a "must have feature" which pushed us to $48k Advance trim. They are not included in 2021 Acura TLX Tech-Package.
Audi does include them in their mid-trim A5 Premium-Plus (along with surround-cameras). It will also super-cruise.

Tesla1856, how are the cupholders for the driver? Do the nubs still bite really hard? My A6 made a mess at least 3 times during its tenure.

Volvo Defector
Congratulations! Beautiful car! I test drove a used A5 many years ago and ended up with the TLX(regrettably). As with you, I have a similar story after being an Acura/Honda owner for 12+ years and had enough. I know a lot of Acura folks on here defected to Audi, but I ended up with Volvo. I came VERY close to getting the newest gen 2019 BMW 330 but the Volvo eeked out at the final hour with a better incentive. Maybe next time around ill go Audi/BMW, we will see. In any case, looks really sharp, more so with the tints from the white/dark contrasts. Enjoy!

And for those that remember me and my 2021 TLX-2.0T story (saga ?) ... I did get my $500 deposit returned to me by my local Acura dealer.
I just had to request it. It took a while to get approval and they had to cut-me-a-check, but I got it.
They were actually pretty nice about it.
I think we are good on vehicles for a few years. However, if Acura has something we like in a few years ... we will go visit them again.
But no more getting over-excited and placing deposits on "all new" cars ... with inspecting and test-driving them first.
Still say that first official video was really well done. But as I watch it now (and know the car, first-hand) ...
I realize that what was impressing me the most was the (still un-released) 2021 TLX Type-S content mixed-in.

New Car Smell
For those of you who took ownership of a brand NEW Audi, did you notice much new car smell?
When I took delivery of my 2015 A6 a couple years back, the dealer was proud of the fact that they were trying to minimize the new car smell as it is full of chemicals that are mostly captive unless you are in the habit of degassing the car with windows open in the garage or some secure area.

I'm trying to find excuses to drive it around. Still only have like 300 miles on it. Gonna plan/take another road-trip to other side of lake (it was 79F here the other day).

Take extra trips to the beach 400+ round trip to run up the mileage on a new car. Most recently have been with a factory recommended1200 mile break-in. Two trips plus local mileage to vary the speed take care of it.

What a sexy car and great choice...
I have a DSG B8.5 S4 and 6MT B8.5 S5 and I think the lines on the S5 are just slightly more sexy for some reason...
I also agree that the Acuras of today are nice but don't quite do it for me enough to want to spend that kind of scratch on them.
I have owned and driven a good amount of cars in the last few years and I still feel that the 2013 S5 Manual I borrowed from my
buddy (at the time) was the best all around car I had ever driven. I still feel that way now.
Congrats and do keep us updated on your adventure...I love a good hatch so the sportback is my style but the coupe turns my head
just as much.

It's become a meme at this point, but it really shouldn't be all that surprising. Audi and Acura sure share a lot of similarities (both largely FWD-based powertrains built on top of more humble VW/Honda platforms with a good mix of daily drivability and performance), and even just 15 years ago they were kind of in the same level on the luxury totem pole, playing second fiddle to their countrymates. But as we all know, Audi moved upmarket whereas Acura just stayed put. Can't be too shocked to see former Acura owners migrate to Audi (rather than BMW/Mercedes/Lexus) as they become more financially secure.

There's just something about how solid they are and how well they drive.
I won't take that away from Acura either...they are a venerable choice...but with that said, I think
they have the same problem a lot of other new cars do...which is that they feel too digital and not
analog enough. Meaning their purpose seems to be only focused on bells and whistles and entertaining
you while forgetting about driving it not feeling numb and mindless.
I actually really love Volvo too, fiatlux...recently started cleaning up an older XC90 and although there are
aspects to the way they are put together that annoy me...they are well build solid and analog feeling to drive.

I don't really like the placement of the cup holders being so close to the front of the center stack but it's a minor thing. You are right that you generally don't need access to those buttons and all the main controls are well located and easy to use.

I traded in my TLX last week for a fully optioned 2018 S5 with 27k miles. It's a lot of fun to drive. The A5 I would imagine is a pretty nice ride as well though coming from a TLX. I probably should have test driven a new A5 as it wouldn't have been too much of bump up to get that new instead of the certified S5. Seems like the TLX Type S is going to be in the range of a decently (but not fully) optioned new S5. I never thought I would switch out of Acura but it doesn't take a long test drive to see the difference.
The 2.0T can be pretty quick with just downpipe and tune but have you seen what they have been doing with unlocking the ECU for tunes with the turbo...the supercharger was already pretty crazy but the turbo is going to be even better.

1. IMO, slightly pre-depreciated is the way to go...you got the upgrade to something pretty fast for going 2 years older. That's a win.

2. When they say the stock A5 does 0-60 in 5.3 secs they mean it. It might be more like 5.0 secs. after break-in.
It is so quick (off the line), smooth transmission (even under full throttle), quiet, and fast (top speed) ... it's a little scary (in an awesome kinda way). So, yes ... easy to imagine how much he likes the 2018-S5-V6 and why.
I personally don't know about custom-tunes or mods, but I assume they don't do it to make them slower.

The unfortunate part is, many of these Acura Loyalist won't entertain the idea of owning anything other than Acura and are stuck in this false mindset that Acura is that company from the good ole days of being know as reliable, affordable, luxury vehicles. The mighty have fallen and have continued to disappoint after their best production models. As an individual that has experienced MANY different vehicles through my 12+ years of being an ASE technician, the newer German vehicles are truly a different animal. The driving dynamics, technology and build quality is unlike the rest. The Acura's of the 90's and early 2000's is what them truly a drivers vehicle. I spent plenty of time behind the wheel of two new 2nd gen TLX. I'm harsh and critical in what i'd expect from a vehicle when you hit a price bracket north of 45K and IMO it's not worth that type of coin. See the 3rd gen TL made a lot of sense. It's a vehicle that was ahead of its time, which is why it's such a timeless classic. It had everything a car enthusiast wants and then some. From a 6MT with LSD, navigation, LED tail lights, Bi-Xenon headlights, interior design ect. It made a lot of sense of the money and it was a sporty sedan made to connect with the driver. I felt completely disconnected with the TLX. I couldn't get myself to truly appreciate it and felt they cut many corners for the price tag. The door panels are terrible, where the bumper meets the hood reminds me of the dodge charger and the exaggerated long nose and short back end is horrific. Honestly the 1st gen TLX A-spec exterior with the 2nd gen TLX interior would have been the best design.
Besides that, I don't believe anyone should be brand loyal. We all work hard and life is too short to not enjoy something fun. I couldn't picture myself owning one brand for the rest of my life. This is my 1st time being a BMW owner and while I'm not 100% happy with them, I do truly enjoy them and really love my M40i. It's such an incredible vehicle and honestly, one of the best vehicles I've owned. The TL will always have a special place in my heart since I have more of an emotional attachment to it. I would do whatever I could to protect my TL 1st over anything else. I treat it as my classic and people think I need to get my head examined.. When I drive the TL, I immediately tell that it's an older vehicle and it's no where near are tight or solid as the BMW's. I couldn't use my TL as a daily anymore because I've gotten a bit spoiled sitting up higher and having enough tire / wheel gap to soak up most of the road payment. In my opinion, I feel way more connected in my TL than I did with the TLX. It has more of that "you drive the car, it doesn't drive you" feeling. As I said, just wish more here would actually go out and test drive other vehicles for the price point.

Sharp looking ride there, got me a Q8 not long ago and loving it. I am a Ross-Tech guy but you should look into ODB11, you can enhance options that did not come with the car (Gear select will have gear numbers D1-8 or S1-8, certain welcome front and rear lights, engage e-brake when park, many more).

I'm not up on all the terms. I think one of the reasons they do it this way is so that if someone bumps you (or wife backs-into a tall curb) , there is a good chance your exhaust system won't get damaged. The port seems to be some kind of metal.
Appears to also be a good shot of tread on Bridgestone Potenza 255/35-R19-96Y summer-tires .
