2021 Acura TLX vs The Competition

100%!
Everyone was waiting for his review and once the review is out, I barely saw any comments or feedback.
All of a sudden, it looks like he isn’t the cool kid anymore among Acurazine members 🤣
That said, even AoA second review is awesome. He definitely provided some Great feedback (positive and negative) but he was honest and on point.
To conclude, as I always say, don’t listen to me or to some members who are here to just point the negatives. Go test drive and feel the car before writing a check of $50K. Of course watch some review and learn a few things beforehand.

Some of you guys might want to take a look at the Car Talk section to see how people with mixed interests can accept other people thoughts that are different from theirs

The word HATERS for someone who just does not think something is great as you do is absolute Also can be defined as kid s**t. Time to grow up & learn that we are individuals with our own opinion. Many of us don't need to search for YouTube opinion pieces to validate our choices.

Having said that, I do prefer the Accord Touring's alloy wheels over the TLX's, which is "uninspired" at best.

Posted in the other thread.
How does the TLX get .5 for most horsepower while the Accord get .5 for being faster? The point of having more power is ?
These YouTube reviews seem to be very important to Tony Pac maybe he can help out with the answer. Its not an important point as the Accord still but the spread would have been bigger if these items had any consistency.

Maybe I haven't noticed it because i've taken a back seat to this part of Acurazine, but who are they? We all have our own opinions, likes and dislikes just as the automotive journalist. I enjoy SG reviews as well as others. Even if I don't agree with their reviews (because it's simply their opinion) I respect it and take it for what it's worth. I think that's the lost translation here and that notorious TLX 2nd gen FB Group. A lot of bias for the Acura brand, which is fine, but the childish and ignorant comments because not everyone's views are the same is over played and done with. There's a fine line between true enthusiast and loyalist (or fans of a particular brand) that able to have an adult conversation about anything automotive related and agree to disagree in a respectful manner. It seems there are many certain individuals that like to stir the pot (on both sides of the fence) and it's worse on that FB page. Can't really consider yourself a huge fan of Acura while bashing fellow Acura loyalist that they are discussing other models like the MDX. Most of these conversations seem to become antagonistic instead of contributing to.. Just my 2 cents from through observation.

This was a pretty good video. The ranking or points were not 100% accurate but still they gave us a good overview of both cars. I give them credit for taking the time and doing a decent comparison. It's up to the buyer to pay $10K for a TLX or not. I gotta respect their work.

Looks like the new 12V mild hybrid setup for the A4 is no joke. Brings the car to a sub-5 0-60 time and shaves almost half a second off the 5-60 and 1/4-mile time. From a power figures perspective, it only adds 9hp and no additional torque, but I imagine it's got to be more responsive.

Makes me even more sad there's no SH TLX. My main gripe was with the responsiveness, and electrification would absolutely address that (and more).

While I agree the scores should be close, beauty is truly in the eye of the beholder. The look of the Accord may take some years to get used to while the TLX is easy on the eyes.

The Type-S needs to be faster than 4.8s. The more Acura waits, the less people will want the Type-S.

Kudos to Audi for sub-5 speeds! I'm not a fan of the A4 front as the chrome around where the fog lights would be brings too much attention to it (hiding cameras/radar there is smart though). Looks like permanent dimples.

2. Agreed. Seems they are going backwards. If 2020 Acuras have MHEV, then seems like 2021-2022 should be some kind of MHEV or PHEV offering.

3. Audi has some magic going. Car starts moving off-the-line quickly. Turbo-lag is virtually non-existent (especially compared to TLX-2.0T). It seems the transmission and powertrain are compensating ... providing a nimble/steady/even acceleration power-curve. There is no waiting and no surging. It just seems so refined compared to TLX.

The Type S needs to be a 4.5 maybe 4.6 second car at the bare minimum or it will be a disaster. The longer they hold out on giving any info the worse it gets for them.

Agree there are a number of excellent tuners out there. I started in 2011 as a beta tester for the JB4 BMW 335is system. Had very good results with just over 400HP to the wheels on a base of 319HP to the wheels.
My Z4 would look a litter better than this with a JB4 package. Our standard premium is 93 octane. Point being turbos are very cheap to get good power increases out of them.
Debating on buying as right now with the stock base power am somewhat traction limited. The 275X19 PSS rears have issues on launch & 1/2 shift.

For those of us who've spent some time behind the wheel of an M340i xdrive or the S4, the TLX-S may not be quite as compelling.
#182
That would be preferable. But my hunch is that it'll be in the 4.8-5.0 second range. I really hope I'm wrong but, I suspect that curb weight will reign in some of the performance. Although there are no specs posted yet, I have this feeling that the TLX-S is going to weigh in the immediate ballpark of my 20 MDX SH-AWD Tech (4,264 lbs). Honestly, I think Acura is gearing this towards Honda buyers who may be 'graduating' from the CTR or those who enjoyed their Accord 2.0T but now want a more substantial Honda sports sedan. #Hondaphiles

Car Crazy for Sure!
quickness being a few tenths quicker than maybe a car in it's same "category." I guess I'm looking at it from what I see it as....for me...to me...as a "car guy" and owner of some
pretty fast cars in my time. Nothing crazy or exotic, but, fun and quick. My current '19 Mustang GT Prem. is pushing approx. 500 hp at the crank. With it's 10 speed trans, and
many "options" to set the shift response, ECM, etc, etc.....I have to say it is damn quick!
So, owning the Type S for me is going to be the fact it's bound to be quick...not like the Mustang, but, exciting enough to be able to enjoy the car and what is has to offer in
all ways. I could care less if it's 4 tenths slower than an Audi. I don't care. I'm not drag racing it on Sat. nights. Yes, I might get really playful on the streets...WHEN IT'S SAFE TO DO
SO...BOYS AND GIRLS...LOL!!!....but, to me just the overall enjoyment of "hopefully being one" with a great handling sedan, with great comfort, and all the goodies inside, and the
strong pull I believe that engine will provide. It should be just plain fun. I'm guessing that there will be other Type S buyers than look at it kinda like me. They are not buying a Sat. night
race track drag car that's out to beat an Audi. I beat them all day long with the Mustang....LOL!! And it's FUN!!. They always think they can take me. Na....ain't happening.
IF after I get my hands on one and do some "hot laps" around the "less traveled roads" not far from my dealership and discover it's not really..."FUN"....then I prob. won't buy it. My dealer
will order what I want....NO DEPOSIT....and if I don't want it....no big deal. He knows he can sell it.
I honestly believe....without doing dyno testing...that Acura often under states the HP ratings of it's vehicles....as MANY manufacturers do. I say this from my own experience driving the 3.5 Honda
Motor Corp engines in: Honda Accord Coupes, Sedans, Acura TLX, RDX and even my MDX. I did some street racing with the Accord Cpe, and the RDX's with the 3.5 and they were quick.. more
than I expected when those Audis were challenging me then too! LOL! Something about those Audi drivers. I could stay with many of them. Just kinda told me that the 3.5 had a little more than
what we were told. What was cool and helped the "launch from a stop" was the SH-Awd system. If you know how to use it you'd be surprised at how great that system is...especially if you learn to
trust it and do some "canyon carving." In my '18 TLX Type S....that thing was amazing powering through twisty's. I read an article...forgot by whom...that was a test driver....and he said most don't
know or appreciate what that SH-Awd can do...unless you really push it hard through twisting back roads. He had done it many times. The trick is he said...is you have to trust what is can do then you
can really enjoy driving it at a faster speed and allow it to "do it's thing."
Supra is a good example. Toyota came out with the new
Supra...albeit on a BMW Z4 chassis and turbo 6...but, they rated it almost 50 hp under what they were dynoed at after the first few were bought. I drove one over 2 days to see IF I wanted it.
It was nasty fast!! But, so small and tight inside I reluctantly had to say "NO"....not for me. But, many vehicles engine HP are under rated.
Acura has always said that the HP number is "approx. 355 hp." Well, it may change or it may not...as far as the "number they give us." But, it could have more than that!! Often insurance rates are
thought about when they give out HP numbers. Now...Dodge sure doesn't care....LOL!!! I think Acura mgmt. is much more conservative and even though they are now..."opening up their performance
oriented design and vehicles"....they don't want to put a "tag" of 400 or 450 hp on their Type S. It MAY have more than 355...closer to 400 hp, maybe....but, they don't want that known.
Somebody will dyno it. Then we'll know!!

If all you want is the sporty look, you can just buy a 2.0L AWD A-Spec (aka "Type S Adjace") and save ~$5k-$7k since the Type S will be missing most of the Advance trim exclusives anyway!
There really is no point in getting this car unless it competes on the track per Acura's "Performance" aspirations!

I think you are in the minority in thinking potential TLX Type S owners don't care about the quickness. This is the ONLY thing they are waiting for before calling it an utter failure!

I think he is right. Don't look at this forum and 5 members lol! Anyway, in this forum we have more anit-Acura members than actual Acura buyers. I always said, those who buy an Acura or Lexus aren't looking for the fastest car out there. Again, this is my personal opinion, I could be very wrong, but most of these sedan buyers just want a nice sport sedan (good handling, a little power, premium inside and of course the badge.) I highly doubt people buy an A4 or a TLX or C Class to race on the streets and constantly monitor if their car did 0-100(KM) in 4 seconds or 4.2 seconds. It's always exciting to look at these numbers for a week or so, then we all move on. Now for sure there are people that care for 0-100 or 4 seconds or 3 seconds. Totally respect them and if that's their priority, then the good news is that there are plenty of cars out there. They don't have to buy a TLX or IS that is slow. Happy holidays fam!

But having zero interest in a brand but yet commenting or spending hours to proof that the brand is not good. I don't get that part. For example, I will never go to a BMW forum and say BMWs are not good. I have no reasons to that or I will never waste my precious time on a brand that I have zero interest to buy.

Listen I keep saying this...It's a free country and thank god we have so many choices. No one has to stay with one brand. I don't deny that I like Honda/Acura products. There is a simple reason behind it. Honda and Acura vehicles never gave me issues, always reliable, low maintenance and I get a decent power and luxury. I am happy with that. At the same, time I have a CX-5 and I helped my cousin to buy a Lexus a few weeks ago. Lexus NX was a better suited car for his needs. The RDX was just too big and techy for him lol!

Yes. Indeed. I had a MINI Cooper for 5 years. I was on the MINI forums daily, loved that car! Had nothing but trouble with that car and as much as I loved it I was so glad I finally got rid of it. When it was gone I no longer visited the MINI forums. I didn't feel the need to go on there an bash the MINI or compare the new models to my new vehicle or others on the market. Same thing happens in the MacRumors forums. Plenty of people with Android phones come to the forums just to bash the iPhone and point out all their short comings. It's just weird...

The Surpa is indeed one of my dream cars and I kick myself in the ass for not buying one 10 years ago when I had the chance.. I wanted to see if the new Supra was worth it (to me). I rented one on turo for 5 days. Racked nearly 900 miles on the vehicle. It's fast for sure and sounds absolutely incredible in Sport mode. Yes, the "IS that a SUPRA?!" is really a thing . It grabs attention and even if you didn't know it was a supra, it just looked incredible. For the price tag, it was a tough one to swallow for what you get. Personally think the interior is very lack luster. The door panels are cheap in design (Bland) and the JB audio was eh, okay at best. The biggest issues I had with the supra, the terrible placement of the infotainment screen. It's DEAD center and due to the lack of sunlight in the vehicle, the screen incredibility dark in the day time, but fantastic at night. The gauge cluster was crap, no offense Toyota or BMW, but it would have been better with the Z4 cluster. The LED headlights are adjusted too low so the lights were terrible at night. The interior was tight for sure and getting in was an issue at times. A few good wacks on the head from the low roof line. It's not a vehicle for daily use (at least not for me). If they refresh the supra, they can do better. As for the power, it's a no brainer the B58 engine is underrated. Do I think Acura will underrate theirs as much as the B58, I honestly doubt it. A lot of the issues with the TLX is the price tag vs what you get vs what else you can get for the same money. Acura has always been the "affordable / luxury" brand.
From when I bought my 3rd gen TL, for the price I paid back then, it felt like an incredible deal for the amount of vehicle I got. Things like, navigation, leather, a sunroof, HID headlights, LED tail lights, brembo brakes ect, for the cost it made a lot of sense. I personally think the cost of vehicles today is absurd which is why I refused to buy any of them brand new. 1 year used, 100% will purchase. My opinion is, while Acura is heading in the right direction and are starting to make incredible vehicles, I feel as they have lost what made them Acura. If you're having a conversation with a co-worker, a friend or family member, you tell them "I really like the new Acura TLX but fully loaded they are 50K+" I'm sure most will be taken back. My father had a 92 Acura legend, every so often he checks ebay for vehicles (just browsing around to pass time) and he will tell me "Do you know how much so and so goes for!" I get it, like most that aren't up with the automotive times, the price is a shocker. Don't take my post in any wrong way or bashing the brand. Would I buy another Acura, yes for sure just not new.
But having zero interest in a brand but yet commenting or spending hours to proof that the brand is not good. I don't get that part. For example, I will never go to a BMW forum and say BMWs are not good. I have no reasons to that or I will never waste my precious time on a brand that I have zero interest to buy.

I appreciate your response to my post and it wasn't any attack to you, just speaking in general. I know you won't do this, but this is a fairly common thing across all enthusiast platforms (including here). Everyone has their opinion including the loyal BMW crowd that are very strongly against the new grille design for the 3/4 series. The difference on the BMW forum while you may state how you feel, if it starts turning ugly the moderators are quick to ban. If what has been happening in this section happens over there, I'd assure you that 3/4 of the members posting would have been removed. Remember way back when the 3rd gen TL was coming out, ACURA members bashed it to all hell. Same thing happened with the 4th gen TL and so on.. ect.. Back then, most here did have Acura's. It's not as common now because this forum is one of the best (IMO). Once you get out of these sections and explore this Acurazine, you will realize what Acurazine has really become.

I agree with you. I personally took a step back and don't want to argue or disrespect anyone. Of course, I will share my opinion but what the hell do I know? I am sure there are people here with more knowledge and experience. I truly enjoy your posts. You always bring facts, you had and have some great cars. It's refreshing when someone share their experience rather than this is good or this is bad.

I think you are in the minority in thinking potential TLX Type S owners don't care about the quickness. This is the ONLY thing they are waiting for before calling it an utter failure!

The Type-S versus new A4 will be the one to watch. Not as expensive as the S4, and just as well appointed inside. The Type-S will cost at least 60k in Canada and will be missing options. I estimate the new A4 to cost around 63-65k fully loaded (not including other fees). If both will do 0-60 in ~5, which one would you get? Based on the 2.0T TLX fuel economy, I think regular users will have a tougher time to pick one. The Type-S may sound better, but like the 0-60 times, is it enough to pull the trigger?

Could be a plan. With a turbo they can add power at the last minute with a few extra pounds of boost. Burger already offers a JB4 package for the TLX 4 Cylinder turbo so even if it comes up short there will be the aftermarket.

For those of us who've spent some time behind the wheel of an M340i xdrive or the S4, the TLX-S may not be quite as compelling.

It matters otherwise they would have never made a Type S and stuck with the current Base TLX. They made the Type S specifically for the Acura buyer owner who wants an actual sports sedan. If it doesn't matter then why don't people just all go out and buy the one already out? It matters. Nobody wants to spend almost 60K for a car claiming to be performance oriented only to get walked by a Base Model German.

I’m still targeting a price $4-$5K over the Advance for a type S. That would bring MSRP to the 53-54K range. I’d be shocked if the car cost more than that.

crap...would you buy it....if it were "faster" than an Audi A4, etc??? Well, I look at the "whole car" and again...not just because I may lose a street drag to an Audi. I don't care enough about
that. IF you are a serious drag strip racer....THEN the issues change. But, not for a "warmed up street sedan." Just don't agree with your point of view. I found others who have written here,
somewhere...LOL....and they felt just like me. You've got to enjoy the overall driving experience. The new Corvette is pretty damn fast, but, IT'S NOT THE FASTEST on the roads....but, the
overall driving experience is way ahead of most all, under approx. $100K. Just a fact. Drive a Challenger Hemi beast. It's all engine...and the rest of the "experience" is NOT all that great. Lousy
interior, doesn't handle, too heavy, too wide, etc, etc. But, boy is is FAST!! LOL!! In a straight line. Anyway....IMHO....the Type S will fit many drivers needs and wants.
