Major problem, help me!!!
So tonight I was driving on the highway, cruise control set at 70, in normal mode. The TLX started making a violent loud banging sound! I pulled off to the side of the road and turned the car off, then when I turned it back on the sound was gone. 10 minutes late i'm off the highway and driving in Midtown and the same thing happens again!!! This time I pull off again, turn the car off and it goes away. I was just about to have the car towed, but I managed to get it home. Now I don't know what to do, I plan to have the car at Acura at 7 am on the dot. I'm very worried
Anyway heres the video of it, sorry for the crappy video quality but this was shot on my Iphone, can anyone identify this sound?

Holy Hannah Batman! Okay, so you're stopped while it's happening and it looks like the car is idling at a normal 800rpms. Questions from me:
Is it the 6 or the 4? Is there vibration with it, Patrick? Or just the sound?
My first thoughts from listening to it are:
Just keep telling yourself...it's under warranty. Sorry you're going through this.

My first thoughts from listening to it are:
- Some sort of premature fuel detonation?
- Engine mount problem/failure?
- Actuator malfunction on the engine mount?
Just keep telling yourself...it's under warranty. Sorry you're going through this.

I'd probably call them before you go, Patrick, and describe what it's doing and ask them if they think it's safe to drive.
That way if they green light you driving it into the dealership you're covered. I'd just wouldn't want them saying that you exacerbated the original problem by continuing to drive it.
I think we've got 24 road side assistance, right? Tell them to tow it in if you think there's any danger of something more catastrophic happening.

So an update, I call at 7 an was told to go ahead and drive the car in. I did so, and have never been treated so poorly in my life!! The service writer said it sounded normal! He said it's just a different kind of car, I told him don't give me that BS it's a brand new car and this is NOT NORMAL!! He finally took it back to have it looked at, and per my request to not have another ILX as a loaner as I meantioned in another post, they gave me an MDX. They will keep the car overnight tonight and try to reproduce the sound.

Did you show him the video you made?
I am so sorry to hear about this, and about how poorly you were treated by the service guy!
Talk with the manager there anyway, and if you don't get any satisfaction, call Acura corporate.
I hope everything will go OK!

Thank you, and yes he did hear the video but clearly he needs to have his hearing checked!! I am giving them this one chance to fix it, from now on I will be taking the car to a different dealership! When I go to pick the car up, I will speak to the general manager about this, and if they are unable to fix the car I will be taking it somewhere else right then. I mean he looked at me and said "what do you want me to do?" Clearly this guy should be working as the janitor for the dealership, not as a service writer!!
That was my first thought too - it almost sounds like something is out of phase with the sound system.
Thanks, I loved my dealership in Texas. Here it seams harder to find a good one. I know one dealership here is good, the people are very nice, but its a bit older and not as nice looking. Its also a bit farther from my house. But looks don't matter and it seams worth the drive so from now on ill be going there.
I imagined you turned the ELS off and the sound was still there.
Sorry to hear about this. I can't stand when the service advisor is so quick to dismiss you, that drives me crazy.
Hopefully Acura gets this corrected for you..Let us know..

The dealership... is it Jackson again? I have only had a breif run in with them however it wasn't very pleasant. Is the outdated dealership you are referring to Nally on Cobb Parkway? That is the dealership I plan on taking my car to once it needs service. It truly doesn't have much curb appeal. I wish I was closer to Acura Carland out in Duluth. Seems like that is the best dealership in our "area". Best of luck to you!!!

So just to give another update, I got a call this afternoon from Acura, they said the technician listened to the audio recording (I texted it to the service writer) and he confirmed it was NOT normal!! The service writer apologized for this morning and said they will be keeping the car until they figure it out, and that I should probably get comfortable in this MDX for the time being. I just hope they figure it out quick, I want my TLX back

Acura doesn't get it. Maybe this service writer was trained this way by the GM??? I have no reason why since they make money on warranty work from Acura. This is why I pass up Acura service and take my out-of-warranty TSX to my local Honda dealer. I get the same work done with the same parts/fuilds at a lower price and I get better support from their service writers than at Acura. Acura just wants to charge more for their service without giving me anything more for the higher price. The best service I ever had was BMW. They hired professionals that knew the car and did not belittle and insult their customers by telling them things like this are normal.
Acura has a cultural problem here that has been noticed time and again (RDX rear dampers for example) and will take effort from corporate and dealership GMs to fix. Until they can make the ownership experience 'luxury' then customers will continue to think of Acura's as fancy Honda's. You'd think no one at Acura Corporate owns an Acura and can't see this for themselves.
Sorry for the rant in your thread. But reading this made me angry and it is not even my car!
Hope you get it fixed. I wonder if the frequency of the noise changed with engine RPM? It almost sounds like it could be a malfunction in the VCM, either shutting down cylinders when it shouldn't and/or getting some backfire through the intake valves? I'm just guessing here obviously.
If it happens again I'd take your video outside the car and open the hood if you can.
Sorry for this terrible issue with your new car. I hope they figure it out. The initial response from the Service Writer is why Acura struggles to gain acceptance as a luxury brand. These guys should be working at a used car lot, not at an Acura dealership. As soon as he said that was normal I would have walked to the GM's office and demanded they assign a competent service rep to me. I would never deal with that guy again.

And I did open the hood after turning the car off to see if I could see any visible cause for this, but if it does happen again ill get video from under the hood while the car is still running.
Thank you! I'm glad to see I'm not the only person mad about this. Aside from the prices I agree BMW does have the best service experience I've ever seen. Even back when I lived in Dallas I had one dealership I loved, Goodson Acura, but another dealership in Plano was just as bad as this one here. The people at this place are not only clueless lies, but they are stuck up and arrogant. I don't know who they think they are! They already ripped me off on my trade in, i finally just gave in because it wasn't even worth my time and effort of trying to sell the car myself. I would have spoken to the GM when I took the car, but it had it there by 7:45 am, the service department opens at 7 and the dealership doesn't open until 9 so he wasn't there yet.
And I did open the hood after turning the car off to see if I could see any visible cause for this, but if it does happen again ill get video from under the hood while the car is still running.
And about the radio, it could have been. I believe that song sounds about the same as this!

Sadly, you found one that does not get it and they are a detriment the brand!
I hope you get back into your baby soon!

to me it sounds like air escaping.
either an exhaust leak
or worse; a spark plug is loose!
and just to confirm; bookem said that it's VIOLENTLY shaking; however, I re-read the OP and he didnt say it was violently shaking...
he said a violent banging noise.
so to confirm, OP, did the car shake with the noise?

^no worries.
just wanted to be sure; as im forming my own opinions on what it could be.
definitely sounds like air escaping as its a pulse sound.
if spark plugs are loose it could cause air to escape but not violently shake.
however; if spark plug ejects; it can and will violently shake the cabin.
i'm only indicating its the spark plug because Honda has had tons of spark plug ejections on their J32-j35 engines.
since the sound is a pulse; it could also be the stereo system like you guise mentioned earlier in the thread.
this wouldnt shake the cabin tho...

Sorry I wasn't very clear, yes it was violently shaking also. I did not put that in the first post, my mistake I should have listed it there. But I did mention it in post #3 I believe. My apologies
Discuss the service department attitude with the dealership Service Manager AND the General Manager then also report all to ACS. Front line courtesy and knowledge or attitude and ignorance starts up the ladder with management. There are some really great dealerships out there that should be commended by telling ACS and personally referring customers to them. But there are some really bad dealerships out there and attitudes like this should be reported to ACS with a case number or nothing gets changed.
I've been very lucky and with the same Acura dealership for 15 years. Have no issues with them from upper management, service manager, receptionists, techs to the service writers on the front line. But it all starts with management doing their best to take care of customers.
I truly believe Acura is trying to make these cars successful and part of that success is dealer attitude and customers being treated with respect for the financial investment they have made not only in Acura but the dealerships. Remember without our investment they do not exist and corporate has finally woken up and smelled the coffee to realize that fact over the last five years.

Could be for all I know. The dealership still has it, they haven't given me an update yet today. I'm really starting to worry, i'm feeling like I should have bought the I4.
I keep replaying the video and the fluttering sound does sound like an exhaust leak. a pitter patter
be sure to keep detailed documents of your visits to the dealer and each problem that happens.
study the lemon law in your state.

Will do, thanks! I hope it doesn't come to that, but if it does it wouldn't hurt me to be ready.
