11.1.1 does not fix the contacts problem. I just bought a new 2018 TLX and am in the old days with iPhone 5s. At first, all contacts load then get reduced down to where my first contact photo is. I deleted the contact photo and re-paired my phone several times but it still only saves to that same point.

I wonder how specific the issues are to different models of phones... I tried it again via USB today and it worked great, and bluetooth still has issues. (I'm going to the USB input in the mini tray, just to be clear. pretty sure that's the only one though)

I plugged my phone in the usb under the tray. It's weird the info screen on the car constantly (on and off) says loading, as if it is disconnecting from the bluetooth. It does this either via bluetooth or connected with the lighting cable. I have no idea whats going on.

Are you using a genuine Apple lightning cable? If not, you may want to try one to see if it make a difference. Also, make sure you don't have any lint build-up in your phone's lightning connector (be very careful to not damage the electrical contacts in there!)

Glad to see Acura has acknowledged the problem, at least! Thank you for posting this.

Yes its a genuine cable and everything is clean. Funny how Acura puts out a statement that ios 11 doesn't work for the phone, mine works fine just Pandora is screwed up.

FWIW, I'm using an off-brand USB cable (USB to microUSB). There's a micro-to-lightning adapter on the end too... and it works great with Pandora. In fact, it's the only way Pandora works normally. Maybe the genuine cable is your problem? lol

Well, from their tech line summary article, "We’ll let you know when there’s a permanent solution available." So I'm betting they're just going to lean on Apple to rollback whatever changed in iOS 11, or make it smart enough to detect an Acura and use the necessary protocols.

The best solution for the consumer would be for all our vehicles to be updated with CarPlay. Kia and other manufacturers have done this in the past, so it's technically feasible, but that would also require Acura shelling out cash for licensing more vehicles. They already have an agreement in place, so that's a major hurdle out of the way, but do they really want to add another lump of licensing fees?

If Acura does anything themselves (unlikely), they will pay an off-shore company to marginally patch whatever the issue is, and make a service bulletin.

My predictions from most to least probable:
1. Nothing happens or we're encouraged to buy the 2018 models...
2. Apple takes it upon themselves to patch iOS 11 for Acura vehicles
3. Acura does a minimally sufficient job patching the infotainment system (which will break again in iOS 12)
4. Acura coughs up the fees for CarPlay, and lets owners get the update for free, but does its best to suppress the news about it

This will never happen as it would cost Honda/Acura a fortune to retrofit Apple Carplay hardware into older model cars. It is not just a software/license update to add Carplay.

This issue affects a huge number of Honda and Acura vehicles. Here is the Honda bulletin regarding those vehicles.

ATS171103
No Phonebook on the ODMD Using an iPhone with iOS 11
Affected Vehicles: 2013-15 Accord, 2013-17 Odyssey, and 2013-15 Pilot

A problem this widespread will gain the attention of Honda/Acura to provide a software fix.

1. Buying a 2018 model does not solve the problems. I have both a 2018 TLX Advance and a 2015 MDX Advance. Both suffer from the problems with iOS 11 (on an iPhone 7, and now an iPhone X). Yes CarPlay works, but the Acura phonebook, and handsfree link issues remain.

2. Apple is aware of the problem (many bug reports have been filed, etc.). and they are apparently working with Honda/Acura. Does this guarantee a fix? No, but I am hopeful.

The workaround of removing pictures and emoji from contacts does appear to allow the phonebook to work.

Ah ha, I thought I deleted my iPhone 5s contact photos but they were still there. I improperly exited out of the contact photo delete by Cancel and not Done. After properly deleting my contact photos, I finally got the import to work all they way through. If your import stops at a specific contact, this means you probably have a photo in the next contact. Turning the Bluetooth/Phone option Use Contact Photo to No in my 2018 TLX did not fix the problem. All are imported....for now!

Mine has been working perfect for the last 3 weeks,, I went in and DELETED all my contact PHOTOS!!! After doing that everything has been fine... Contact photos were not a big thing to me,, but that does not let Apple and Acura off the hook.. This affects a LOT of cars made by Acura and Honda.. As mentioned previously would it not be nice that we get a software update that adds Apple Play to the menu..

Did you remove them one by one on your phone or did you just turn off the feature in the dashboard that asks if we'd like to use contact photos?

I did the latter and it didn't do anything.

Turning it off in the MDX menu does NOT fix it. You have to delete the photos one by one.. I had about 36 to delete, but after they were all deleted it works fine..

Any quick way to find which contacts have photos? On my iPhone I have to go into each contact and check to see if there's a picture, which is a pain w/ over 250 contacts.

iOS 11 address book workaround

you can use your call history to make calls. Only issue is you need to recognize the phone number. You won’t have the name in call history due to address book issue. I have tried this on 2015 tlx and 2017 mdx.

Same problem as everyone else. Spoke to a supervisor at Apple who claims that Honda and Apple are aware of the situation and that Apple will correct it as part of an iOS 11 update. Of course, no one knows when this will happen because Apple (being Apple) will not share any additional information with consumers!

Smile The FIX is IN! 2015 TLX SH-AWD/Tech

Don't remember who started it, but I can say with CERTAINTY, if you DELETE ALL your PICTURES attached to contacts, the phone book syncs PERFECTLY; all 218 contacts!
Showed my electrical dealer tech, & he was amazed; almost couldn't believe it, till he saw it 1st hand
If you DELETE EVERY picture, you're good to go
I have an IPhone SE/128GB/IOS 11.0.3/TMobile

Thanks for this, but remember it’s not a fix - it’s a workaround. It’s sad that this has to be done to restore the functionality of iOS 10. To make matters even worse you can’t revert back to iOS 10. Great job Apple!

The workaround worked for me

i reviewed over a thousand contacts and deleted all pictures. Entire addresses book appears to be in my 2017 MDX. Had to delete and re-add the phone to make it work.

I just got a 2018 TLX and experienced this same issue with PhoneBook Contacts. I spoke to my dealer who put me in contact with Acura Bluetooth Support. They said Acura engineers had been in contact with Apple. They are awaiting a fix from Apple. I have iOS 11.1.2 so am anxious for next update. One thing they did tell me for a work-around is to hold down the HFL voice button until Siri responds. I can then say “Call <any name in phonebook>” and Siri will ask me which number if multiple numbers for contact. That seems to work well. The feature is called Siri Eyes Free.

I do not like the Siri option from handsfree because you have to press and hold for over 5 seconds for the initial response. I want to push the call button once and be done with it. But with the handsfree to make a call, it has to be pressed twice. This entire handsfree system is super clunky

Same issue

After being so annoyed every time I get in my 2016 MDX I decided to sit in my driveway for an hour this morning to (try to) address this issue. After no luck I found this thread which has been super helpful and affirming it’s not just me having the issue. Count me in as another annoyed Acura owner who’d love this issue resolved ASAP.

Ugh - I am glad and frustrated to find this thread. I just bought a new 2018 RDX with Tech Package and find myself dealing with all the issues mentioned in this thread. My wife has an iPhone 6 Plus and I have a X; both have connection and the contact name issues. This being my first Acura with Tech Package, does Acura issue firmware updates via Acura Link or that can be uploaded via USB? This is the "Tech" package after all...

If you program the 3 or more most called numbers into the speed dial option in the Acura Bluetooth menu, you only need to press the steering wheel call button to bring up the first 3 in the instrument panel mini status window and press again to call if it’s number 1 or use the steering wheel scroll to find the speed dial number you want and press the wheel to initiate the call. I find that quicker and easier than any voice command options so far. Siri Eyes free recognizes voice command names better than the handsfree

Hey Dave, if you have your iPhone set to listen for ‘hey siri’ mode while in standby, I just found out that you can completely bypass the handsfree clunky interface. Simply say ‘hey Siri call joe’ and your phone will make the call through the handsfree link without even pressing a single button. It works great and your eyes never leave the road. I thought I would post this tip here even though it’s the error thread

FWIW...I never had the contacts sync issue with my iPhone 6s Plus, using iOS 11.x, but I never had pictures in my contacts.

Got my new iPhone X with iOS 11.2 and restored from the previous backup and no issues with it either. All contacts, recent calls sync with no problems to my ‘15 TLX.

My wife's iPhone 7 11.2 temporarily sync's contacts in a brand new 2018 MDX Tech and within a few minutes they vanish to only 8 contacts out of the A's. We have hard booted the phone uninstalled and re installed the phone in the car and the car in the phone without improvement. We have not deleted the contact pictures. We will do this next. The same phone did sync contacts with our 2016 MDX tech that we traded in minutes before we tried it with the 2018 MDX. Finally, we took her phone off and loaded my own iPhone 7 11.2 which is identical to my wife's which worked perfectly. It also worked perfectly with my brand new 2018 RDX Advanced. Thoughts?
