According to the TLX specifications, the TLX has a 15 gig HDD. I can't find any mention of it in the owner's manual. Does anyone know what it does, how to access it, etc?

Put a CD in the car, it'll automatically copy the tracks and store them on the hard drive. I believe you can choose either 192 or 128 kbps.
There should be an 'HDD' button on the stereo so you can access the music on there anytime.

Advanced
It and all of the other audio functions are in the Nav manual. The HDD section starts on page 177.
EE4Life posted it and many other documents here a few weeks ago. Thanks!

Remember, only store bought CDs have the necessary catalog number for the Gracenote database to read. If you put homemade CDs in the player, it won't be able to decipher the song titles and artists. It will still rip it, but having 15 GB of music all titled "unknown artist" won't be very rewarding....

Nowadays, most of us play MP3's from some audio app (like iTunes) through a smartphone. I myself happily pay $12/month for Spotify, which let's me play from an almost infinite playlist, streamed straight from my phone. Any song, any time I feel like. After watching Lego the Movie with my kids, they felt like listening to the main tune on the drive home. No problem, I just streamed "Everything is Awesome" straight from my phone, through the ELS sound system.
Acura really needs to provide a smartphone interface that does nothing except mirror iOS or Android, and provide a sensitive capacitive touchscreen for us to operate the phone from. The smartphones are so far ahead of the car systems in almost all aspects, with an astonishing rate of improvement from the intense competition.

I want my 6 CD/DVD player back. Who wants to listen to neutered music tracks on a hi-fi stereo!
And a 15 gig HD is absolutely pathetic!! Where did they even find such a small hard drive?
Come listen to a DVD Audio disk in my 3G and then plug in your iPhone, if you can't hear a huge difference, then your deaf.
Sure it's nice to cram a whack of MP3's on your portable device, but some of us still like GOOD sound. And with the car being so quite my Eagles DTS CD sounds incredible on the ELS system. Not as good as my 3G DVD-A disks, but very nice all the same.

Can somebody tell me how long it takes for it to copy a CD? Does it actually play it while recording it?
I have not tried it on my RDX yet,but I like the idea of having some favorite cd's there without having to store them in the car.
Thanks,
Steve

You can either play and listen to the entire CD for it to be recorded, or you can manually force a recording and play another source while the recording is in progress.
The recording is done at playback speed.

Really? That's a let down. My 2011 TSX rips faster than playback. I can rip 12 3 - 4 minute songs in the time it takes to play 2 - 3.
However, I agree with other posters. I may not use this feature just because I can stream my entire collection plus any other song I want through Google Play Music or Amazon MP3. Shame it only comes with Pandora built in.
It does look like in the next year or two Acura will have both Android and Apple car interfaces for its car. That will be a huge step forward.

Sorry, I spoke without actually testing it. It was an ASSumption on my part, and a bad posting that I am so critical of seeing on the web. If the TSX does it faster then that is likely the same for the TLX. Maybe I should try it before opening my big mouth.

That said - HDD is a horrible mess IMO. The cd's don't go into unique folders so you end up with a bunch of songs all mushed together from the various cd's. The manual says it should create a playlist for each CD you rip but I'm not showing an playlists. Dunno if there's a setting I need to tweak or not but otherwise it's a pretty worthless feature IMO.

2014 TL SH-AWD Advance
Yeah, I tried it out on my '14 TL. It works ok, but no title or artist comes up on the display. Yes, you can search by voice for artist or song. I'll just keep bluetoothing my android and playing songs from there.

I don't know why they stopped supporting DVD-A.. I'd think the cost of the decoder would not be that high

Does anyone know how to delete songs off the HDD? There are some CDs I do like to load, but after a time I'd like to get rid of them. Can't seem to find a delete function. And 15G

From the Navigation Manual:
- select the HDD as the source
- Press Menu and select Edit/Delete from the menu (p181)
- select Delete to deleted the selected album or playlist (p184)
or
- select List Tracks, then Delete (p186)

HDD works fine for me. It is amazing it rips the entire CD by the third song.
They also put the rip % on the screen. Must have been in the update.
I agree with the DVD-A diehards. I was looking forward to that but was unpleasantly surprised to not see it on the TLX.
I'll listen to music in any format in the car other than wax, vinyl, cassette or AM radio.
A friend loaned me a CD of a band he listens to and I ripped it on the way to lunch and gave him the CD back.
If you don't like it, don't use it. Simple.

The key to a good experience in ripping CDs is that they have to have "CD Text" with the title and author at least. Otherwise you are at the mercy of the Gracenote database stored on the vehicle. This may be out of date or hopelessly inadequate for the music you like. (It has had almost none of my Jazz CDs.)
With CD Text on the CD the rip will organize the tracks by CD title and artist. There are sometimes exceptions--the track info on some CDs is spotty, so artist may not be correct. A program like Nero Burning Rom can record this data. I have had almost no luck with original CDs, but if I rip them on my computer (which I do anyway) I can burn a CD that the TLX likes. I have taken to using CD-RW disks to save in throwing away the disk after the car rips it.

I do find that CDs ripped in the higher quality mode sound better than any other sound source and only in this and original CD does ELS really shine. I have no lossless downloads. I have taken to getting CDs from the local library (such a cheap skate) and ripping them. No real problem with organising them on the display. Some CDs I have deleted all bar a few tracks. Gracenote recognition is a bit spotty with classical CDs too. You can manually add names but a chore.

At first I was like "hey, that's a cool feature the TLX has," but after thinking about for another thirty seconds, a laundry list of facepalms came to mind, many of which have been already pointed out.
1. Who the hell buys CDs anymore?
2. Is there another way of accessing the HDD, like through USB? If not, fail.
3. 15GB is impressive... 15 years ago.
4. The feature is essentially useless if you have rely on purchased CDs. Maybe I should listen to unknown artist today. No, no, maybe I'll listen to unknown artist instead. Yeah!
5. How long does it take to rip a CD? Nothing more annoying than having to wait two weeks to upload your entire collection. I applaud those who have the patience.
6. This is just as bad as Acura putting a tape deck in the 3G TL in 2004. Wtf, people.

Has anyone located the physical HDD? Is this just a partition on a larger drive for Nav and voice commands? It would be interesting to see if this could be duplicated onto a drive with much more space available.

#4: Just burn a CD-R of whatever you want to load. (Granted a direct route would be preferable. But who knows what DRM issues Acura is avoiding this way.) Burn with CD-Text and all the "unknowns" are corrected.
#5: Also commented on. Not instantaneous, but not really a problem. Just rip while driving. You did want to listen to the music anyway, didn't you?
But I guess you are really not so concerned about this, just want something to bitch about.

^^ That is just a silly comment. The days of cassette tape are long gone, and the CD player may be gone in a few years but until CD's are no longer commercially sold then it is essential to provide the facility. You don't have to use it.
By the way, what Acura car do you drive?

Eagles, Allman's, Clapton, McCartney, Moody's, etc.
It's not DVD/A, but it's the closest thing to it

Someone stole my DTS copy; still have the DVD/A; one of my faves.
Wish Aja would be re-mastered in surround
Fagen claims the original tapes were stolen, or lost; whatever
Anyway, great music lasts forever; enjoy
