Will 2021 redesign kill my lease deal?

My lease is up in September of 2020 on a 2018 TLX A-Spec. Wondering if there’s a body redesign how bad my ability to get a good lease deal will be. Figuring redesign demand and prices up and therefore value for my 2018 down. Any thoughts? How has this worked out before in similar cases?

depreciation happens no matter if there is a redesign or not

Sure, but cars usually see a steeper drop when a new generation comes out.

Buy out your 2018 or lease a new 2020.

Or buy the 18, keep it until 2023, then trade it for a CPO 2021 TypeS!

Well, except for Toyotas. One of the reasons the 4Runner has remarkable resale value is 1) they're dead reliable and 2) they haven't changed for over 10 years.

@RDX10 You have also mentioned this in the before past too, and I must agree!

Yessir! The 4runner is an anomaly in the automotive industry. It's ancient as hell mechanically but it just keeps on keeping on lmao.

I feel like it's a solid performer yet I've only ridden in a 2006 V6 back in 2012 as well as two V8s!

A friend owned a 2004 V8 model that I drove A LOT (actually learned how to drive on that 4runner) and that same friend now owns a 2013 model that she purchased 4ish years ago. I drove that one too a couple times. It is a solid SUV but I honestly think they're super boring and overrated. They're still running a 5 speed in 2019 (part of why they are so damn bullet proof).

I wouldn't pay 55k for a new one because it doesn't have the best on road manners and it's now too big and bulky to be taken offroad (and again expensive).

I kind of appreciate that it's using an old drivetrain.

I saw a 1999-ish 4Runner outside, close to where I park. It was indigo with 2006-2009 SR5 wheels! Looks awesome!

The people who like them definitely buy them for that reason. Simple transmission and engine, no crazy electronics. Just rock solid. But just not for me.

That's been the key to Toyota's success.

I'm kind of afraid of something that tall and softly sprung. I like being a little lower.

Definitely! I know a multimillionaire real estate investor who drives a Lexus RX because she got fed up of taking her X5 into the dealer. It wasn't a money thing but a time thing for her.

Yup, I felt like I was going to topple over a lot. It drove like the 2G RDX. Like a boat. But it's not intended to be driven hard lol.

Your lease end date is the earliest you can walk away without owing more money. You can always keep your lease going month to month u til you find a goos deal on the next gen TLX.

Cool story about the lady with the Lexus RX!

Have you driven a 3G RDX yet?

Hmmm. Interesting. How do they work mileage in that case?

Once your lease end date comes they pro-rate your annual mileage rate on a monthly basis, so if you have 12K mike annual lease you get 1K miles a month and they just add it up at turn in. I had asked about it when I was thinking of holding out for a G70. I forgot how long they said you can do it for, but it was for a long enough time to not worry. The extension also buys down your buyout cost if you decide to eventually buy it.

Thank you for this information. Looks like a good option for me. I was also considering dropping down to ILX, but at 6'2" . not sure I want that.

Am I the only one who doesn't understand the premise of this thread? Wait! No, I guess not, hence the fact it morphed into a 4-Runner thread.

If you assume the redesigned TLX is available by September, 2020, which it should be, your lease will be up and you are free and clear to lease the new one without penalty, unless I am missing something.

@joneswood , to directly answer your question, when your lease is up, it’s done. You have no value in the car to worry about unless you want to buy it out. The value has no bearing on what lease deal you can get on a next gen TLX. What does have a bearing on your lease deal are “new car penalty” (ie it’s new, you won’t get a good deal on price of new car) and loyalty. If you lease another Acura, and haven’t used all the miles in your lease, you can carry them over to the next lease. I carried over 12k miles from my RLX lease to my current TLX lease and so was able to secure a 10k/year lease (or lower monthly), but can drive 42k miles. Flexible for sudden job change with longer commute, etc. The damage covered is also higher, up to $1500. The new TLX is coming in the spring, so the car will be long released by the time your car comes off lease. Mine comes off lease in June 2020, and if the TLX-S version isn’t out at that time, or worse, turns out to be disappointing,I have some hard decisions to make.
