Rear Door Keyless Access

I'd shuffle this under a maybe unless more details are found but has anyone attempted at replacing the rear door handles to lock/unlock like the front doors?

Acura mentions that
*Some Canadian models include rear door keyless access.
so I'm guessing that parts are available and the mod is no more difficult than adding the remote start system.

Interesting... I did not know Canadian models has this feature. Why is Acura cheaping out on the US models? Same with the A-SPEC badges on the ILX only Canadian models had them.

Yes canadians models have all 4 doors, but who cares? Whats the point? Do you enter your rear door first often? You could just grab the front door (but not open) and let them al unlock.

Actually I found myself tugging on the back door handle a couple of times.
I never take out my key fob from my pocket.
When going directly to open the trunk and the car still locked I forget and tug on the back door then realize I need to swipe my hand on the front handle first. Also I sometimes store small shopping bags in the back seat instead on the trunk, again finding myself pulling the back door handle.
Not a big deal but if I had back door keyless entry I wouldn't feel so slow tugged that back door. Lol

I think you'd probably have to plug in some wiring harness somewhere, but it *shouldn't* be that hard.

I have a Canadian model and one of my rear door lock circles was getting stuck (was like that since day 1, just didn't address it until now, but it still worked), and recently had it replaced under warranty this week. It took the Acura dealership less than an hour to replace the handle, but then again, the electronics were already in there.

There's a lot of stuff the Canadian models have that the US ones don't. For example, on my 2016 SH-AWD Elite:
  • Heated Steering Wheel
  • Heated Rear Seats
  • Heated Front Glass Element (by windshield wiper area)
  • Larger Washer Fluid Tank
  • Headlight Washer Jets (pop-out style, they retract once they're done spraying)
  • Rear Keyless Entry and Lock
  • Remote Start (built-in standard feature for Tech or higher models)

However, there are several things we don't get:
  • Pandora radio
  • Updated AcuraLink Traffic (ours is usually representative of typical traffic, not current traffic
  • Navigation Address by Voice (we have to put ours in manually)

imo this is one of the most underrated feature a car can have. So much so that you don't even see it mentioned in car specs and reviews unless you dig around. But for young families or just folks who tend to throw their bags in the bag seat before hopping on to the front it should make sense to be able to unlock their back doors first I'm guessing. At this point it's a strictly "nice to have" for me but since my wife and I are planning for family it would be good to know if it's possible if at all.

It should be possible. I mean the cars are built in the same factory. However, I'm not sure if they have the same digital controller for the doors. So even if you got the hardware, and plugged it all in (assuming the wiring all exists), it still might not work. You're going to have to do some serious digging with regards to part numbers and stuff.

Mine has this feature and I love it. I have 2 kids and this is great when I have them with me. Whichever one of them is on the same side of the car as me can unlock all of the doors so they can start to get in while I am heading for the trunk. This comes in very handy almost every day when I pick them up from school. Is it absolutely necessary? I suppose not. But it is very convenient.

That's one of the annoyances of the TLX, no rear door keyless entry. Everyday I have to take the first step of unlocking the car from driver door before letting my dog in the back...

Would think a feature like that would be standard by now.

As a Canadian, it's great to have all the features that Young TL mentioned, particularly the heated steering wheel, rear door keyless access, and heated windshield. Acura US should include the 4 door access on the US model and also offer a cold weather package (heated rear seats, steering wheel, heated windshield, headlight washer and extra large washer fluid tank) for a relatively cheap price.

All the time. These special Canadian features are yet another reason Acura and I will part ways in the future. No excuse for missing features in the US. NONE.

You can use the key fob and unlock all four doors.

But use of the key fob is riskier these days, as the signal can be "recorded" and reproduced by someone with the proper equipment, such as RollJam. If you use the button, that defeats this type of equipment.

Kinda defeats the purpose of the convenience of keeping the key in my pocket. Yeah it's a small gripe, but still a feature I would expect to be standard in a car, especially in the Advance trim.

First world problem....

Wait, what???? The code is encrypted, but even if not, who do you think is sitting around close enough to your car waiting for you to hit the button?

Sorry, but that's tin foil hat stuff.

modern "hackers" have devised a clever way around it. The first press of the button is picked up by the "hacking device" and blocks the car from sending it. The 2nd time you press the button wondering why it didnt unlock the "device" picks it up and allows it to transmit to the car. This helps the "device" unlock the encryption/rolling code used.

In addition, the first signal sent that was blocked is stored so it can be replayed later to open the lock. Devices like this are used for a variety of security system "tampering" from garage doors to keyfobs.

To each his/her own, but to me that's not a concern, and while the technology may exist, it's a bit far fetched as far a risk for you or me pressing the key fob for a TLX or opening my garage door.

for 99% of folks it isnt a concern as we don't have maybachs or gold bullion sitting in our homes, we are just simple acura owners

TO the OP, maybe you could buy the rear sensors and simply wire them up to the front door wiring for lock/unlock functions.

upon inspection the front sensors look like would fit the rear doors fine but the project itself is definitely more complex than I originally expected. i'll be shuffling this under nice-to-have. i'd like to get mirroring and remote start done first and those are already in a queue for down the road.

Sorry to tell you that this isn't isolated to Honda/Acura. Most all brands do this. The Canada version always get stuff the US spec does not have. And if it sold globally there may be features the international market has the us Americans don't have.

Example: My wife's Lexus NX F Sport does not have available Active Suspension or Heads Up Display to name a few features. But the Canada version does and the international one has more stuff.

What's even worse is Triple Beam LED headlights are available BUT not available in my region. The regional Lexus Dealer group decides what feature are available for cars on their dealer lots. You want an available feature that is not available in your region? You have to custom order one and wait 3 months for it come from Japan.

So in the big picture Acura isn't so bad.
