LED Headlamps in cold conditions

I've read that LED lamps don't consume a lot of power, nor do they throw much heat. So wouldn't it make sense to have standard headlamp washers to get rid of snow/ice and road salt which will certainly block light output? I'm thinking inexcusable to omit this feature on a totally redesigned car.

Isn't standard in Canada or on the higher trim? In US it is a rare feature on many cars. Even my A6 has the cutouts where they go, but none of the US models have them.

That's inexcusable.

They produce plenty of heat, I assure you. They look to be the same modules as the MDX OEM LEDs, which we have four sets of in stock.

I've got some good shots of the internals and output on their item page: http://www.theretrofitsource.com/clo...l#.U78LDvldUnY.

Headlight washers are not standard in Canada - However, I think that European specs require them if HIDs are installed.
They would be very useful in snow/slush conditions...

I wouldn't mind paying for washers as an option. Trouble is unavailability.

Hey Andrew, there is definite interest from the 3GTL guys, question is who wants to be the guinea pig and take a chance on it and have to figure out all the clearances and feasibility of the mod. It's one thing to say it should work on paper but another to actually SEE it CAN be done.

If you guys could do an actual install on a 3GTL and show pics, at $500 you will sell a ton of these!

^check out the TRS forums.
I believe JnC and Nate are active in the MDX jewel led thread over there.
JnC stated that with a little shaving of the heat sink, it can fit.

I remember MB in the 80s even having wipers on the headlights as a standard thing. Although headlight washers have trickled down over the years, it still seems to be a "high-end" luxury item to this day and Acura is still on that "entry-lux" end.

But you are very right, things have changed. Higher end cars used to mean a larger car with all the toppings. That mentality has changed because not everyone wants such a large car. Some want them small and efficient to fit their needs, but they want them loaded with all the creature comforts of the flagship and they are willing to pay for it. Look at the 3/4 series. It can be loaded like a mini-7series stickering close to $60k. 10yrs ago that would have sounded positively ridiculous.

With all the features like cross-traffic cameras, blind spot detection, cooled seats etc etc. on the TLX, they might as well offer a full menu of options. Heated headlight washers should naturally be part of a cold weather pkg. along with heated steering wheel/windshield etc. It's the kind of stuff I wouldn't need in the car but some people will.

Yea I gotta follow up, I haven't looked there for awhile. But till that's done I don't see many people taking a bite. If a DIY was posted that would make it golden. We are all visually oriented animals.

If it comes out as nice as I picture it in my head, I could see it potentially as the new headlight mod fad. It may replace the mere "blacking out the headlights" mod of 10yrs. ago.

Part of the issues with headlight washers is that the US crash regs require a different absorber that is often incompatible with the plumbing required for the washers.

Since washers arent required, the manufacturers often feel it is much easier just to delete them.
