I don't know much about Turbo engines but all I know say is the following:
Turbos are hyped big time!!!

Acura was ahead of the game back in 2006-07. The first RDX had turbo engine but no one liked it....everyone was running after V6. Now all of a sudden every single car company is changing to Turbo...I hope this is a good decision for people that buy their cars and keep them for a long period of time.

That's because it was a non turbo platform, that was turned turbo. Had Honda built a turbo engine from the ground up, it would've been a different story. The power output was so-so, while the fuel economy was missing in it's entirety.

Everyone is going turbo these days, for two reasons:
1. Near instant max torque, starting as early as ~1500rpm.
2. Slightly better fuel economy, when not boosting all the time, helping meet CAFE requirements.

Isn't the turbo six in the NSX a longitudinal engine? And built by Yamaha? It would be interesting if Acura is planning to make a proper RWD-biased vehicle, but I have my doubts.

While I haven't heard Yamaha's involvement with the NSX engine, it is drastically different from the traditional 3.5L J-series engine that Honda/Acura has been using for the last decade and I wouldn't be surprised if Honda has outside help with the NSX engine development. The NSX 3.5L engine has a cylinder bank angle of 75 deg, DOHC, different bore/stroke verses the 3.5L J-series 60 deg and SOHC.

It likely does not make sense for Acura to continue to use a turbocharged 3.5L unit for future models when you can attain the same output with less displacement at higher boost. The extra displacement only adds unnecessary deadweight with the power output that Acura is likely aiming for (350 - 400 HP). Acura was also confirmed to be developing a 3.0L turbocharged engine, which makes more sense in the TLX, RDX, and MDX Type-S models. I too would love to see a proper RWD set up but I think Acura will probably double down on a transverse mounted 3.0L turbo with SH-AWD for its Type-S models.

Yamaha Motors are owned by Toyota(previously Ford), the engines Yamaha made were all designed for Toyota/Lexus products. (Celica, LFA)

I believe this nsx v6 was largely designed and built by Cosworth in UK, and shipped to Ohio for the final assembly.

You're right! That is actually pretty interesting. Now that is what the TLX needs... a Cosworth engine.

Thanks for clarifying. I remember reading Acura had some outside help but couldn't remember the exact details.

The NSX engine is ridiculously expensive. It might as well cost as much as a new TLX... it won't be finding it's way into the Type S anytime soon.

I wonder about the MDX and RLX. It's been rumored they'd get the V6T as standard, with Sport Hybrid tech as the top trim. I wonder if they will rename the SH cars Type S instead. I'd be okay with it, to be honest. Just makes the Type S brand that much more well known, and if executed correctly, that much more respected. The word is still out on what is happening with the ILX. Since the 10g Civic has been out for some time now, and there still is no peep of a 10G Civic based ILX, I wonder if Acura is a) just killing off the ILX, or b) launching it on a new platform, for which the 11G Civic could be based. Or, I guess, c) neither. But then I have no idea what trick they have up their sleeve

I would love a RDX Type S. I think I'd be pretty happy with a 2.0T A-Spec RDX, but I would be much happier if it had a V6T option. Since the Integra and RSX, Acura hasn't been very lucky with their small cars. They should just kill the small car completely, and maybe launch a TLX-based Sportback/Fastback coupe like what their competition is doing.

In Detroit earlier this year, we asserted our commitment to performance by announcing the expansion of our A-Spec lineup, and the coming return of Acura Type-S, the name used for high performance Acura models for much of our history. We also revealed plans for an all-new, Acura-exclusive V6 turbo engine.

There have been no specifics on the type of V6 Acura is planning (I.e.: completely new V6 adapted from the NSX vs. a J-series derived V6), but unless they pull the rug out from under us (due to bean counters), I’d say it’s coming.
