Acura Press Release -- Type S is coming

I got an Acura press release in my email last night, talking about A-Spec RDX and MDX -- and stating unambiguously that Type S was coming, with turbos. Woo Hoo!

True, not a twin turbo, but the implication was turbos in more than one model Type S.

Wow. I'm shocked. I'll believe it when I see it. It looks like it will be offered in the 2nd gen TLX in 2020. I never purchase new cars but since my goal it to push my 4G to 300K miles, some of them might be old enough in about 6 years, 2024 or so, to get a hold of one at a reasonable price

I have that marketing email, too, but no mention of type S anywhere. ???

Definitely mentions the MDX A-Spec, but no type-S. We may have received different mailings. Here's what I received:

I was wrong, I had clicked on the link beneath the MDX where it says Read The Latest which took me here: https://www.acura.com/news-and-press...ticle=10230-en . There near the bottom it says:

In addition to rapidly expanding the A-Spec sport appearance variant to all core models, Acura re-affirmed its intention – first announced at the North American International Auto Show in January – to bring back the vaunted Type-S performance variant over the next few years, alongside a dedicated turbocharged V6 engine in development. The Type-S badge last appeared on the 2008 Acura TL, which featured a track-tuned chassis, more powerful engine and brakes, high-performance tires and extensive, sports-oriented exterior and interior modifications. Like the new engine, the Type-S badge will make its way onto multiple Acura models in the future.

Wow that article refered to multiple models with the type S badge. It is about freaking time Acura had a dedicated division to more power/performance/style like AMG or M division albeit not as grand.

Hard to think how busy Acura must be. The MDX and TLX are due for FMC and then whatever they may be doing with RLX. And when you think about all the tech going into these with Precision cockpit (I expect that a full LCD Instrument cluster is coming soon) they must be running full throttle.

The TLX is supposed to get the V6 turbo next year. There are mules driving around right now testing the engine.

My dealer guy continues to say summer/fall of 2019 as a MY2020 car. 350/400 hp and SH-AWD.

Don't forget the aging ILX, which the car it's based on (the civic) got redesigned for the 2016 model year. What are they doing with that?

RLX is probably toast. There's no need to dump investment into it with such low sales. New ILX with detuned Type R motor and SH-AWD would be interesting but will they go for it? Just build it off current Civic platform. TLX Type S MUST have 400hp. It needs to dominate. I don't want to hear that the Stinger or the new Genesis is faster. If it is, that's an automatic FAIL.

I agree. With declining sedan sales, Acura should just focus on one sedan. And then later introduce a coupe based on that sedan.

I would love to see another Acura coupe and not like their old coupes that were basically the sedans without two doors, something totally unique.

I'd love to see both.

I know. Not happening.

But a GT style coupe built off the TLX platform would be nice to see again, along with an Acura version of the Type R would be nice too. Crank the boost on the CTR engine one notch to bump power, give it Sh-AWD, optional 6MT or 7MT () and grown up styling... hahaha, I know... fantasy land. But a guy can dream, right?

The icing on the cake would be having a 6MT or 7MT for the TLX coupe too. Sigh...

Dump the RLX. Offer the long wheelbase TLX for the old folks/real estate people.

I agree with your statement. I had a 2011 4G and it's interior seemed larger than my current 18 TLX. I know most people are under the spell of SUV's and the auto companies are responding by offering SUV's in every price and size class. As a single person, I have no desire to drive such a vehicle. I still like a sedans and coupes. Many sedan offering are being discontinued by their makers, so I'm not too sure Acura and others are going to spend much time developing sedans that don't sell any more. Still I hope that maybe a slightly larger TLX may come into being in the future.

The new Accord looks huge compared to the TLX. If they start with that platform, that would be really interesting. The new Accord is gorgeous too.

I really like the size of the current TLX and would be happy to get a smaller ILX, if they made one that was really good, with the Turbo 2.0 engine.

And with all the new tricks today on maximizing interior space they can make it feel pretty large. yet maintain a dynamic handling size.

Yeah, I think the current size is perfect. Interior space could definitely be improved though. The Legacy is about the same size as the TLX, yet it has more usable room. Notably the nice large square trunk and more room in the rear.

I had an 09 4G SH-AWD--way too big for my tastes (went back to another 3G after). The 5G is just about the right size IMO.

Not sure what help that might be a Toyota Avalon is slightly bigger then a 5 series & that does not seem to be a factor for them.

Interesting Sports Sedan comment. You have any Idea how many people are bitching that the current 3 series is too big? The 3 has grown at 183" into the size of a previous generations 5 series.

My 135is about the same size 172" as the older 3 series cars & is a lot more nimble then my 440's 183". Think once they get bloated the idea to sport starts to fade. Think the 189" 3G TL was as big as you can get as a Sports Sedan. Much bigger & you are a family sedan.

I had the 4G, the car was too big. Not nimble, felt heavy. TLX is perfect size. Don't even mention the new Accord. That thing looks like a damn whale. If Acura makes the next TLX look anything like that it's OVER. That would be my worst nightmare. Getting that Turbo engine finally with a horrible design.

I had a 3G that was perfect (until I totaled it)...I could not buy the 4G as it was too big and I really don't like it's looks. Instead I went with the TSX. It's not my favorite car and it took a long time to get used to the lack of HP, but it's been a work horse for me and I've had zero issues in the 8 years I've owned it.

I never liked the look of the TLX until the Aspec but I do like it's dimensions . But the head unit is so outdated I won't buy it

I will be honest I was sure I was not doing an Acura this year at the end of my lease. I was set on G80 Sport or G70 Sport. Damn G80 Sport in AWD and Red is rare and after driving it a few times felt the seats were a tad firm and uncomfortable and the car is big and feels big, It weight something like 4500lbs and you feel it as it is not nimble at all and even with stiffer suspension still plows into the turns a bit. I really liked the RLX, but that head unit is a disaster, and it road too floaty. The Aspec TLX is gorgeous and the updated head unit is fine once you jack in your phone and use Android Auto or Carplay.

Once I saw the Aspec in person my love for Acura returned. Is the car perfect, no, but Acura really got a lot right with this car. Had they dropped in the 10AT this thing would be a truly amazing car. I am very please with the suspension tuning and tire selection (good riddance Goodyears are gone).

Same here. The 4G TL was too big for me so I got the TSX, and while it took me awhile to get used to the lack of punch (coming as I was from a monstrous SAAB 9-5 Aero), it has been a fantastic car. Great handling, outstanding MT, and bulletproof. It has been a total workhorse.

But even the TSX is a little big for my tastes, so I was hoping for a new ILX with the Accord's 2.0T and SH-AWD. Heck, I might even ditch MT for an A3-crushing ILX like that. But, as it stands, I'm seriously considering a loaded Focus ST, on which amazing deals are available. I doubt it will be as reliable as the TSX, but it has loads of character and is a blast to drive.
