4cyl TLX
are all these issues the TLX is having mostly with the 6cylinder model or does the 4cyl have the same issues? im in market for a new car and have been looking at a TL (13 or 14 model) , or even a TLX provided i like it and can get a decent deal on one. i really like the look of the car but all these issues is swaying my decision back to the TL. I like having power so im hesitant about trying a 4cylinder. just wondering if i should give the TLX a look and test drive the 4cyl? or stick to looking at the TL ?

Test drive both the 4 and the 6. The 16 MY seems to be much better than the 15's and now the 17's are hitting the lots.

I had a 15 3.5 SH-AWD Tech and now a 16 2.4 Tech. I prefer the 8 speed DCT on the 4 cylinder, however, having said that, the 9 speed on the 16 and up is somewhat improved. Both are excellent engines. Overall, I find the 2.4 still has plenty of power for my needs and the fuel economy is excellent. All this being said, test drive each extensively and go from there.

So basically, do you perfer to floor a 4, or drive a V6 normal...
It seems like the 2.4 still achieves 0-60 in 6.7 seconds...
Either way, they both seem good, I'd just be worried about the transmission...

I've had an early build 2015 4 cylinder base since Oct '15. A couple of transmission hiccups early on that were smoothed out with 2 software updates. 32,500 miles so far with no major issues. Overall, a very good car for the $$.

I've got an early build as well - purchased mine in early September of 2014. I've had a couple software updates for the DCT and it's 95% fine. I still get the very occasional klunkly downshift into 1st gear but nothing like the kick from behind before the updates. Overall I would buy the car again with no fear - it's not a perfect DCT but it's very good and not something that should scare someone away from making the purchase like the early builds on the V6 with the ZF tranny.

one thing i dont understand is how some say its "bland" or dont like the design,etc. i think its one of the best looking cars ive ever seen in my life. im basically drooling over one but i know the '18 models will have a different grill and exposed exhaust so im thinking maybe just wait on those

for u guys that own one are u satisfied with the headlight output. reading a few reviews it seems some guys are even scared to drive it at night saying it doesnt shine far and when turning onto a dark road its worse.

I'm going to call it somewhere between 7 and 8 seconds - probably won't be far off.
About the same as an early 70's Corvette

Right - so throw out the high and the low and you're in the the low 7's. I took mine on a 1,200 mile trip a few months ago - through the mountains of West Virginia - and not once did I wish the car had more power. Is a V6 faster and smoother - sure - but for the regular driver (i.e., someone who doesn't care about burnouts or days at the track) the 4 cyl has plenty of power. Plenty of power.

I, personally, have the most fun with a 7.5-8.5 second car!!!
That being said, the I4 does have plenty of power, heck, a 2016 Camry SE 2.5 with 178hp is plenty fast, I got to 60 in 8.0-8.6, two runs!!!
A 2004 Accord 2.4 I drove had plenty of torque, it felt very strong, and this has 45 more hp and better gearing!!!

so, maybe "more power" is the wrong way to think of it.
also, I dont know the difference in weight between the two...but if the TLX weighs less, which I suspect it does, it will do better than the TSX.

If it's quicker, I'd say it's because of the gearing or updated engine design, i.e. direct injection...
Theoretically, the TSX should weigh less, it's really small I find, plus, the TLX has more tech, more airbags, and is A LOT bigger!!!

I love my 4 cylinder. Compared to the 6, it feels sportier, lighter and more nimble. Everytime the dealer gives me a 6cul loaner, I hate it.
I came from an 03 TL Type S that I absolutely loved.

Conversely - if you're a 4 cyl person you may enjoy driving a more powerful car but in the end it's not something you need or even want enough to go out and purchase.
Regardless - the question here was relating to the potential issues and in that case there's no question the 6 cyl has had more issues (transmission related) than the 4.

I had a 6 Cyl loaner last year and while it certainly is faster and smoother - it wasn't "blow you away" faster. It does handle differently as well. It was fun to drive for the day but when I got my car back I didn't miss the extra power of the 6.

I have a 06 TSX 2,4L I-4 5AT and it has more than enough power for everyday commuting and city driving for me. The issue I had is when my TSX was my main travel vehicle with hwy speeds of 80-85 mph with altitude from 5200 ft in my home town to as high as +11,000 feet in Colorado. The 2.4L also required a little planning and luck to pass on two lane highways. Upgrading to a TL would have given me more power; but, not that more in cargo space. I solved my passing issue, high altitude driving lack of hp/tq problems, and gain a lot more cargo space with my turbo RDX; but, took a BIG hit in the mpgs department.
Personally, if I had any doubts the 2.4L might not be enough power, I would go for the 3.5L V-6. If you like to drive your car hard all year long, I would go for the sh-awd. I never heard a person say "my car has way too much HP" compared to saying it doesn't have enough.

the problem here in Houston is that ppl drive fast on the freeways. 70-80mph is the norm.
I daily drive a 4 cylinder and it does not have enough passing power for the flow of traffic.
to combat this, I just drive slower, that way ppl over take me and if i need to make a lane change, I'll do it after they pass.
with my TL however, it has enough go at 80mph to overtake MOST ppl

I am happy with my 6-cyl. TLX. Although ity was bad at first, fuel economy improved and overall is 24mpg. I run it on regular.
No 4-cyl. can match the sound and driving experience of a 6, sorry. This is not to say that the 4-cyl. is not enough.
And finally, my ZF9 (2016 edition) is an excellent transmission, butter smooth and crisp.

It all boils down to if you want to have to push the engine more or not...
If you do a lot of highway driving or passing, I'd suggest a V6...
But otherwise, it might be just for speed!!!
Personally, after driving only 4 cylinders, the turbo RDX's power is nice, but I find myself getting bored by just gently accelerating, I want to feel the power and hear the engine roar to speed up!!!
I love the extra power, but I find myself getting bored sometimes!!!

I was leasing a 2011 BMW 335i prior to purchasing my 2.4 TLX. Having all that power is really not necessary for everyday driving. It was so fun to test drive the 335i but in hindsight I could have settled for the 328i. The TLX 4 cyl has no problem going up steep hills going 80 MPH. 206 is pretty decent power for a non turbo 4 banger. My 2001 GS 300 had around 220/225 HP and that was pretty quick for an 6 cylinder back in it's day.

It's not just the DCT and gearing; the TLX engine has 10-12 more lb.-ft. of torque. When I tested a TLX 2.4 I didn't push it, but in normal driving it felt about the same as my TSX for power.

were there any known issues with the 2.4? including transmission? i went by acura today and looked but didnt get to test drive. salesman were busy and i didnt have alot of time. gonna go back one day this week

thanks for the link! read thro it and that forum. really leaning toward just getting a 13 or 14 model TL. too many issues with the TLX. hopefully the 17 or 18 models will have everything sorted out
