Toyo Extensa HP

I haven't really heard anyone running these tires but I was looking for a summer setup under the $600 price range (in Canada) and the only tires I could find are Nankangs, GT Radial, Triangle, or Falken 453's. I'm still a student and 245/35/20's are expensive enough so I can't afford to ball out on PSS or Pirelli's.

I came across these Toyo Extensa HP's and they had a deal for $420 USD so roughly $500 after it comes to Canada. Wondering if anyone ever heard of these?

I can vouch for Toyo as a brand, but not those specific tires.

I was always taught that you spend as much as possible on things that connect you to the ground - your shoes, your tires, and your mattress.

Don't cheap out!

I would do that if I had the money. I'm not cheaping out spending $9k in tuition to connect myself to life lmfao. I almost decided to sell my car this year and just bus everywhere.

'Merica; where our buying habits extend into canda.

if you cant afford it; why the heck did you decide to do crazy stuff to your car?

-keep car, sell wheels.
-pay off student loans.
- get better job
- buy fancier wheels.

priorities.

if you're buying strict summer tires; the off brand ones wont give you the same traction as branded summers.

because; each brand uses its own compound of rubber. a cheaper brand will not spend the money on more expensive rubber. plain and simple.

you're just better off buying all season tires; not summers.

also, you might not want to hear it because its expensive...butt, tires are pretty much experimental.

you cant trust other peoples reviews because every one is different.

I briefly looked up the Toyo Extensa HP and they seem to be awesome all season tires, not summers.

So, go ahead and try them out!! because it fits your budget.
if they suck, then you know for next time not to get them again, or to up your budget.

I hate to seem harsh, but Justin is right. I wouldn't feel comfortable buying a sexy wheel package if I'm throwing bargain-bin tires on them. If that's the situation you're finding yourself in, you may want to reassess.

This was like what happened with your air suspension a while back...you bought a sub-par kit, and look where you wound up?

From one student to another, take this as practical advice, not criticism. Safety is really my point here.

<----------for 4 years, never did any modding.
my friends were all doing shit to their cars, while I paid mine off.

car is now paid off, and I have MORE funds to DO MORE MODS than my friends, because they still have car payments. AND they've had their TL longer than I have.

Priorities.

There's no need to bash on me since you might not know my lifestyle or my life choices. The first thing is I live out in the suburbs while I go to school in the city and it's about a 45 minute drive or an hour and half to 2 hour bus.

Second is my car is paid off, and I don't owe money since I never took OSAP or a student loan through the bank. My current part time job pays well enough for me to maintain a savings for an upcoming down payment on a house as well as paying for what my scholarship doesn't cover. The reason why I said I was considering selling my car was because due to gas prices and the TL being horrid on gas along with my parents picking up a third car. It was an option that was available to me.

Also, this isn't my first degree. After finishing mechanical engineering, I continued onto computer science as a second major, with the possibility of doing my MSc.

The only reason I want to "cheap out" on my tires is because I would like to save money on larger purchases in the future aka a house. I've also been reading reviews consistently on tires and I've looked at higher brand name tires like Dunlop, Falken or Goodyear and they all have their flaws like Falken's lasting only 2 seasons or so on so I didn't want to spend $1k on tires that would last 2 seasons.

Toyo Extensa are all seasons. I'm not looking for race traction as I drive a TL, not a C63 AMG. My goal as a luxury car is to have smooth rolling tires with minimal noise, not performance tires which is why I had no issues going with all seasons. I guess I didn't really make my first post to clearly but I was looking for tires for the summer, not summer tires. Canadian whether so I figured "summer tires" also means all seasons since in the winter, winter tires are basically mandatory.

While it may have been 4 years for you, it could be 6 years for me in school. I spent my past 4 years "modding" my car while enjoying what I have and preparing for a house while still in school and being able to budget it all so maybe your choice to not mod your car was a good idea for you. But buying rims and tires for my car is all I'm really doing so as you can see, my priorities seem to be set.

I started this thread because I wanted to get feedback on Toyo Extensa HP's as I've heard nothing but positive feedback about Toyo tires so I just wanted to know if anyone else has used them before. Obviously because of me "cheaping out" by saving half to prepare for larger purchases, I'm being criticized by my life choices, and to be honest. I didn't sign up on an Acurazine forum to have people negatively judge my life, I find it rather insulting and rude. For what I have, the situation I'm in and the path I'm going towards. For a 21 year old student, I'm doing better than most so there's no reason for you do any of that.

Having met Andrew several times,i have to say that he is a humble and modest person.

He simply wants an opinion on the tires he asked about and would like to hear from anyone who may have had any experience with them, simply question to which there should be simple answers, not advise on how he should manage his affairs.

One can have their priorities straight and have some fun as well,i know because i have been there myself.

It is a brand name tire and if he really wanted to "cheap out" he could have bought some no name tires and call it a day.

We have had Toyo in the past and they were they were a good all around performer. But as others have said, I can't comment on this particular model.

The Extensas are value/budget tires and are a step below the Proxes 4 Plus. They are still good tires but Id spend the extra 100 or so to get the Proxes 4 Plus. That's their newest and best A/S H/P tires available. It is quiet, smooth and has great traction but also has a 45 or 50K mile warranty depending on the tire rating. Having said that, Extensas are an excellent choice for cheap quality tires. The T1R are their summer tires.

It is the cheapest I've found online. You live in Canada so I don't know the difference in price and fees.

Awesome info!!

Thanks for all of this. It really helped deciding what I wanted. I actually ordered my Toyo Extensa's from that website but I might cancel them and go for the Proxes 4, going to read up a bit more about the tires themselves. I wasn't set on all seasons or summers so I'm pretty flexible on anything.

Basically how tires work when coming into Canada from USA is that you are charged shipping to Canada (tire rack is usually $200 give or take for shipping), HST (13% to 20% depending on where the tires are made) along with brokerage (or COD) of up to 50% of what the declared value is.

Because I'm in Ottawa and the distance to USA is about 45 minutes, I ship it to the US and drive over to pick it up.

With these Toyo tires I'm basically paying...

Cost of tires: $105 x4 = $420
Holding fee at UPS in USA: $5 per tires x4 = $20
Tax when coming into Canada: 13% because Toyo's are made in USA. If they were made anywhere else, it would be 20%
Conversion...
and cost of my gas, which is cheaper to fill up in USA anyways.

So $475.00 CAD + tax = $536.75
+ holding fee ($22.75 cad) = $559.50
+ cost of mounting and balancing (roughly $100 cad)
+ TPMS sensors (not sure yet)

If I were to ship it directly to my house it would be basically the cost of a new butthole from being raped by duties, customs, and brokerage (cod) lol.

Ahaha thanks for the comments. I've always wanted to own a set of Michelin PSS like what you had. My eyes immediately caught attention of your tires when I saw the shine of them along with the flagship racing flags with the Michelin word across the tires. Maybe one day when I find my summer car that I would like to track (eyeing on S2000) and purchase those super grippy wheels

I use to cheap out on tires. My previous Acura TSX I actually ran Nankangs during the summer. Reason was they would only last a season or two due to the -5 degree camber. I've given up on that stanced lifestyle. Surprisingly, the Nankangs ran amazingly. I never had issues and my mechanic actually said balancing them was more easier than some brand name tires which is why I considered them again. Only downside was that they were loud.

I had both the Proxes 4 and 4 Plus on previous cars, and both were great tires. The 4 Plus seems to be much quieter, I think those are a good choice for what you are needing.

I have the Versado LX and they are quiet and comfortable. Not sure if they come in 20's though!
