Need help with coilovers
Hey guys,I got something in the works. I would greatly appreciate if anyone who has a set of coilovers awaiting install, if they would measure from top to bottom the coilover complete assembly. Both front and rear.
My plan is to make a set of coilover which isn't available for our tls fit. I gotta have measurements to verify. I'm also going to see if the top mounts are the same. Visually the fronts have same amount of studs, 5.
If this works it will give us 4th gen TL ers a very nice setup. The spring rates are higher then tein ss come from factory.
I hate to be the guinea pig but I'm gonna do my research carefully and be safe.
I would like to thank in advance for anyone's help

My plan is to convert the tein flex from a 04 to 08 tsx to work on our 4th gen Tl. The advantage is being able to lower the car without changing spring preload, better spring rates, and better control then the tein ss. I had ss and wasn't as happy as I am with the flex. I used both of the coils on my previous car.
The conversion process at the moment seems to be simple. Manufacture the lower mount collar to the specs of the Tl. Shock body remains unaffected and the new shock collar will be made of stainless steel painted same green.

Craps. Thanks though.
I'm actually waiting for tein to open cause I want to ask how much is the lower collar for the flex coilover for any Honda with a rear fork setup. It might be cheaper and better quality this route.

The flex I'm using is from 04 to 08 Acura tsx.
The tein SS for the 4th gen TL uses a spring rate of 10 front and 6 rear.
The flex for the tsx uses a spring rate of 14 front and 8 rear. Based on that alone the coilover can handle the added weight of the TL. I'm still doing research.
Im trying to speak with tein to see the price of the rear shock collar in fork setup like the tl and go from there. Will be posting pictures soon.

If you just want to swap the springs on your tein SS for something firmer that can also go lower FYAH has already done this. I don't know what Tein springs he put in there as replacements though.
See the problem I had with the SS is when I lowered my car more then tein recommend the springs were loose and rattle when I hit bumps. With the tein flexs I can drop the car all the way and the spring maintains tension and no rattle. Reason being is that the flex is adjusted by the rotation the lower shock collar. Springs can be purchased for the SS at 100 per corner. I contacted a dealer here.
^^ your theory could also potentially improve ride quality in the flex option as opposed to ss, since you could dial in optimum pre-load and lower the car without sacrificing suspension travel.

If TEIN decide to make a FLEX coilover that will be great to have more options but for those that like the TEIN SS and just want a stiffer ride or lower drop changing to stiffer springs can work without issues.
Hey FAYH TL
I had the tein SS on my 2003 accord. I wanted it lower so I adjusted them and the spring was loose when I had the car raised. After that I went with the type flex coilover frm the tsx and installed them without issues. Was able to go lower and the spring always maintained tension even when the car was raised to do work on it.
That was my biggest problem with the SS. Never bought the stiffer springs though, so I don't know the outcome. But I did enjoy the flex a lot more. Thus the reason for me wanting to use them on the TL.
Last time I spoke to tein, he was waiting on the rep from Japan to get back to him. Another obstacle I encountered was the front upper mounts are bigger on the TL then the tsx, same amount if studs and location but spacing is different. Tein can also make new upper mounts to fit the car and coilovers under the custom section for 280 for the front. The rears I haven't measured.
Fingers crossed..

^ TEIN Flex will be nice to have... When i raised the car with TEIN SS coilovers with the original springs and or the new stiffer springs the springs became loose because they were no tension on them. the floor jack was holding the weight of the car. so i made sure before releasing the floor jack the springs was in position to take tension.
