Michelin Primacy MXM long term review

'10 SH-AWD

Overall I was pleased with all aspects of this tires performance and low noise levels. Initially it was quieter than I expected, better in standing water than I expected, and better in snow than I expected. It stayed quiet and provided good handling. I had the pilot sports on briefly before this tire, but returned them in exchange for the Primacy's. I commented on my pilot sports shortcomings here. https://acurazine.com/forums/tires-w...-891376/page3/

Over the last 4 weeks I put 5000+ miles on them on a trip to the east coast over thanksgiving. I noticed diminished handling in snow in South Dakota. I inspected the tires and found them on the tread wear bars upon my return home. They lasted a bit over 36,000 miles. I was hoping for a little more, as they are rated as a 60,000 mile tire, but overall I was satisfied.

Costco's warranty credited me $384 toward a set of the new Michelin Premier A/S tires. I will have them installed tomorrow. I was a bit disappointed at that pro-rated amount, as the new tires are ~1100 ish/set of 4 out the door.

Thank you for the review.

I too have the Primacy MXM4 for the last 22K miles. So far I am pleased with them except for one thing - I wish they were a little more quiet. Maybe I am picky, or the TL is already noisy but sometimes, they are loud on concrete surfaces around where I live. For tread life, they are at 7/32" right now so I don't think I'll get 60K miles out of them. One thing I really like is that they track straight and smooth. No vibration whatsoever.

In conclusion, they are much better than the stock Pilot HX MXM4.

The cost was actually ~$954 before the prorate was applied, not 1100 like I said in my original post.

I have the factory MXM4's and found them to be a great tire.

The SH-AWD tends to eat tires faster than regular FWD/RWD cars. I got 68K out of the rears on my 2013 and around 30K so far with 4/32nds of tread left.

They don't have the best performance (they are grand touring tires) but do a stellar job handling the power very well. They are quieter than most performance tires but as said above are fairly loud on concrete surfaces.

Wet traction has diminished 20% or so after having the tread wear down and that's expected. My FWD TL can handle standing water fairly well for how worn the tires are on the highway, easily on city streets.

Best of luck on your new purchase! Did you fill out the $70 michelin mail in rebate?

^^ Michelin naming convention is confusing, but I think we are talking about 2 different tires:

1. Factory Pilot HX MXM4
2. Primacy MXM4 - Although softer/smoother/quieter compared to the factory MXM4, it's still noisy on concrete surfaces.

I too still have the factory Pilots and think they are a pretty reasonable compromise between wear, noise and wet/dry handling. I'd buy them again if I could be sure I was getting the exact same OEM compound.

+1

these tires are really bad in snow & ice. I just put on studless winter tires (Michelin X-ice Xi3's) and LOVE them!!

I have some sidewall damage on my OEM Pilot MXM4 tires. I dislike these tires, they squeak on sharp corners and they are loud. I have 30k miles on these tires and they appear to have plenty of tread to go to 60k. I need to replace 1 but I am considering going with a new set of 4 to keep everything kosher. Any recommendations aside from Primacy? I live in SoCal so don't need snow performance. I would like something more on the quiet side.

I've been looking at Turanza Serenity Plus, Continental DWS06, and Pirelli Cinturato P7.

They are all highly rated for comfort and quietness. The P7 seems to get brave reviews for being quiet and smooth but it's a gran touring tire so you'll lose some traction if driven aggressively.

Just to be clear, this review was for the PRIMACY MXM's, not the PILOT MXM's. I found the PRIMACY MXM's to be better than expected in the snow, however, I had the PILOT SPORTS briefly (returned them to COSTCO to get the primacy's) I knew they would be marginal in the snow, but they were worse than marginal, and their wet weather performance was worse than i expected as well.
