Koni Shocks

Has anyone installed Koni Sport shocks on a SH-AWD TL. I understand that the shock mounts need to be slightly modified for the strut rod. Just wanted to see if anyone has done this before I do it. Thanks.

Hmm. You might be the first one. Would like to know your results.
1. Looking at the parts for 2012SH & non-SH I noticed the following. I think the shock parts are the same for all 4G. Except for the obvious shock and spring part numbers the only parts that differ are ...
2012 SH-AWD top: FRONT SHOCK ABSORBER for 2012 Acura TL uses item 8 (qty 2) in place of items 5(1), 7(2), & 11(2). All other parts seem to be the same.
2012 non-SH-AWD top: FRONT SHOCK ABSORBER for 2012 Acura TL

The bottom mount forks (items 1 & 2) seem to the same.
2012 SH-AWD bottom: FRONT LOWER ARM for 2012 Acura TL

2012 non-SH-AWD top:FRONT LOWER ARM for 2012 Acura TL

Do you plan to install the Koni yellow or the gold FSD?

If I go Koni I would love to use the FSD. I need to check the the 4G uses the same shocks for FWD and AWD. I'm thinking that any difference would be in the springs.

the only difference I can find is with part no. 8 with the SH-AWD using a different cushion/rubber part. I think you should be fine with the install with no modifications required.

Upon further investigation I found that the KYB brand of shocks are the same part number in front for a 2012 TL FWD & AWD. The KYB rear is the one that has a different part number for each model. Looking at OEM parts for the rear shock for both models yields: Only the shock and spring differ. All other hardware is the same. Therefore maybe the Koni support rep was right but not specific enough. Maybe the rear shock from the FWD can be modified to fit the AWD.

According to the KYB web site, the 2009 and 2012 TL use the same shocks regardless whether the car is FWD or AWD. That is why I'm still researching FSD fitment. Acura also specifies the same shocks for both cars.

Hmm, that is correct. The information I had was on Tirerack.com yesterday and now it's been replaced. Perhaps it was in error.

Also, to double check on Oreillyauto.com:
FWD & AWD:
FR = KYB 340054
FL = KYB 340055
R = KYB 340049

... same as the KYB website.

This makes more sense to me that the shocks are interchangeable between models/years. OEM are different for fine tuning for each model but typically they are interchangeable for aftermarket.

Can't wait to hear what you have to say about the FSDs. I've been eyeing those up for a while.....

The shocks on the TL are the same for both models. The springs are different. I'm having a qualified mechanic do the install. I will also be suppling new shock mounts.

Koni FSD's being installed as I post. I can't wait to give them a work out. Not expecting to turn the car into something that it isn't. Expecting to greatly improve on an already good interstate flyer.

Koni FSD's are great. Much improved smoothness while maintaining very positive control.Will have more time with car this weekend for a more in depth drive.

After driving with the FSD shocks over the weekend, I have the following observations on my upgrade.
1. Well worth the cost and the search for this upgrade
2. Smoother and more compliant than the worn factory shocks.
3. While seemingly soft, they are better handling at speed through the corners.
4. Holes don't transmit sharp jolts through the car.

fsures, did you get the OEM shock mounts? Or something better?

The OEM shock mounts are metal. No need for replacements. No modification was necessary.

Bringing this thread up as a suspension upgrade is in my near future. Thinking the Koni FSDs plus H&R Sports for the full "kit." Call me nutty but I'd prefer this setup to coilovers unless I was going to go Ohlins/KW or PSS9's, none of which are available and/or in my price range.

So, if I'm using this diagram for the front:
FRONT SHOCK ABSORBER for 2010 Acura TL

What constitutes the "shock mount?" Is it a combination of parts? Or am I just overlooking something (most likely)? Many thanks in advance!

@Fsures, now that you have some time on the setup, what are your longer term thoughts?

Edit, and I just re-read your last post; did you not end up replacing any OEM parts then?

The FSD are OEM replacements. I did not lower the car. No OEM parts required replacement. Apparently the OEM shock mounts are metal and didn't require replacement.After putting some miles on the shocks, I would definitely do it again. In the future I might install the progressive rear sway bar. Other than that, the car is now a wonderful daily driver.

Thanks fsures! I'm having a really hard time deciding on which direction I want to go, H&R Sports + Koni FSD (around $950 total) or Tein SAs. Doesn't seem like I can really go wrong either way but considering I want better performance AND maximize comfort between the two options, the H&R/Koni combo seems most appealing but it's hard to argue against a decent set of C/Os.

You will do well with either setup. I am a Koni fan. I have never had any issues with Koni's.

I'm currently researching new shocks for my 2009 TL SH-AWD. I have about 75000 miles and I've been lowered on H&R springs for the past couple years.. I can tell my shocks are worn.. I get a floaty feeling at times... car doesn't feel rough, but it isn't stable like it should be.

I know everyone raves about Teins..but I could care less about messing with my ride height.. my ride height right now is awesome.. my OEM shocks + springs it looks perfect to me. so swapping something in that will keep that the same is perfectly fine for me.. assuming that putting in konis will NOT change the ride height much at all.

I see you did the Koni FSD shocks. I know that Koni also makes the yellow Sport shock for the TL.

it sounds like you confirmed that the shocks for the FWD are actually the same as the AWD models?? so that really, even though the websites all say the FWD setups will NOT work with the AWD setups, that's wrong? your fit just fine?

I" guessing that means the Koni Sports would fit my SH-AWD?? I'd much rather get the sports as I want stiffer/firmer handling and my car is lowered.

anyone care to chime in on the upside/downside to running Koni sports / H&R sprigns vs just swapping the whole thing out for a set of Teins?

The FWD is slightly lighter than the AWD so I'd imagine the online parts places list 2 separate shocks but there isnt an AWD specific one. I've heard great things about the Koni's and don't think you'll have an issue with them.
