Wet Sand and Buff w/o Clear Coat Failure.

Hi, I have a 2013 Acura TL in black. The paint measures at 3.6mils. There are alot of scratches to the trunk, most of it looks like clear coat, but a few that I can run my finger nails into. Can this be safely wet sanded and buffed/ polished? Will I get clear coat failure and what can I do after it gets wet sanded and buffed to help prevent clear coat failure? Again the paint measure was 3.6mils and its factroy paint. Thanks for all the help.

Rule of thumb is if you can feel it with your fingernail, you can't safely eliminate it entirely. It can be reduced though.

My Google says 3.6 mils is about 91 microns, which seems about average for factory paint thickness.

Best thing you can do to help prevent clear failure is to keep it clean and protected with some kind of sealant or wax.

The paint may be 3.6, but that's the primer, paint, clear, total, and as the clear is minimal, maybe 2 mils max (2/1000th in). I'd say once you start sanding the clear, you'll break through before the scratches are removed. Probably better to refinish the trunk.

My advice is if you're not too familiar with wet sanding have a professional detailer take a look at it. It will be money well spent, because although it will cost you more then doing it yourself, it will save you a ton of money if you mess up the finish..

IMO you can wet sand and reclear to cover up 99% of the scratches and make sure the clear doesn't fail.
