Terrible MPG-help

I got my 08 TL 2 weeks ago. I am only getting 18MPG even after highway driving. How can this be possible? My friends type s TL gets 25MPG.

We live in a area where stop and go traffic can be avoided greatly and I use the highway mostly to get around but still I am only averaging 18MPG.

Can I set up an appointment at Acura and ask them to take a look at the car? Will I be charged? I still have full warranty.

Average MPH-20
Average MPG-18

I am not a lead foot driver at all. So please help.

Average speed of 20mph leads me to believe that you aren't driving much freeway. Over how many miles are these averages being taken from?

Please try a search. Tons of "Bad MPG" threads have came up in the past.

Good luck

Not sure how that's happening to you. I drive 80% city and I rarely get under 22 mpg.

I am searching but thought I could get a bit more help this way . Not that far. The day I drove the car home which was all highway about 90 miles got 18MPG constant.

Car is used 4-5 miles on the highway. Total commute is only 14 miles per day.

The car idle for 3 min per day in the morning. Should I stop doing that? If I don't let it idle in the morning it makes a nasty noise when shifting into R.

First off, you're one of the few that posted the average mph as part of the supplied data and that helps in assessment.

Yes the 20mph average speed is a dead give away to your problem. I usually have 26 mph and I have a mostly suburban 14 mile roundtrip commute with just 6 miles of freeway. For 20mph, you're doing well getting even 18mpg because I get that much with a 26mph reading sometimes- it's usually 19 and not much better than yours.

Idling the engine is a killer for mpg. You must be stopped at some long lights or in bad stop and go traffic, in drive thrus, metered ramps, or something to get such a low mph reading. I'll get 15mph going one mile from Costco for gas to office and pass through 4 lights in the process- and you're just 5mph better and on the freeway.

Yes- stop letting it idle. 3 minutes is like one extra light each day. Note your average mph is determined by engine on time divided by miles driven. If you're idling 3 minutes a day, that is like 3+ miles at highway speeds. So in a week's time that's like 25 fewer miles per tank and 1+ gallons of gas.

Thanks for the reply.

I don't understand the 20MPH either. The road I use in the morning I avoid all traffic lights and get right onto the highway. From the highway I exit and that road has some traffic which lasts 3-5 min which is stop and go and then my commute is over.

How do I reset the readings? I can't figure out how to. My tire pressure is 35/35/35/32. Should I fill up to 40?

I just want to get 25MPG. I get 27MPG on my 528i and got 26MPG on my ES350.

Another note to add. The brakes on my car don't feel like they have 20k on them....they feel more like 50k. I am thinking the previous owner drove it harsh or something.

I'm assuming the car has 20K on it, but that's pretty new and it shouldn't be getting to bad of gas mileage. Make sure your tires are inflated to about 35PSI cold. As well, I would also suggest that you stop idling your car for 3+ minutes. Is there any reason why you are idling for so long?

If it's to "warm-up" the car, there is no need for that. By the time you start your car, put on your seatbelt, adjust/check your mirrors and seat the car should be ready to go at a moderate pace. Don't start redlining it right out of the drive-way!

Also PLEASE be sure to run premium fuel. Using regular makes the engine retard the timing and thus due to a variety of reasons leads to really bad gas mileage. It ends up costing WAY more in the long run and short run by using regular gas.

Another thing to keep in mind is just use proper driving techniques. Don't speed up to lights that are red, simply let off the gas pedal!

Thanks. I just coast to lights. How can I reset the readings do you know?

And I see you have a 760....how do you like it? Fantastic cars. Cousin had one it caught on fire due to some freak electrical issue. Now he is rocking F01 740li.

I think by accident you moved this to 4th gen TL section. I have 3rd gen.

^ push the Select button for the mid- hold it down and it resets. You might want to look at the owners manual because there are lots of nuggets of info like this- there's a quick reference card that is worth a look if you're short on time.

you can reset your mpg average on the trip computer by holding down the select button on the steering wheel for a few seconds...

and yes, be sure to be using premium fuel, when i had my 07 type s, it got 2mpg more with premium vrs mid grade...

i got 376 on a full tank just today.. at 21.7mpg reading on my gauge cluster.. i dont understand why you guys dont get that much.. i do about 40% city and 60% highway..

work 5 days a week and 15 miles back and forth..

right now im at 23 miles left before empty tank..

either your pumping 87 on your gas or your 91 premium isnt really premium..

gas makes a difference, believe me!

arco gas might be cheaper but you get less miles vs shell/chevron which is slightly more expensive but you get more miles out of them.

also do you use cruise on your car? i do all the time and this helps.

My SH-AWD has seen as high as 28 ... as low as 18... average lifetime is 23.2. I log everything on fuellly maybe you'd be best served to keep a log

I really don't understand some of these really low MPG reports. My AWD is averaging 24.6 at about 35 mph (about 1/2 highway and 1/2 urban-suburban). I don't really try that hard to get good mileage.

In addition to the info above (use high quality premium gas, keep tires inflated, etc.), you might try making sure you manually turn off the A/C when you don't need air conditioning. If your climate control is on full auto, A/C is going to be cycling on and off to lower humidity, etc. even when outside temps are not that warm. A/C in stop and go driving really drains the MPG.

I am getting 24.8 mpg lifetime with 2500 miles on the SH-AWD... 34 mile round trip, roughly 30 miles of that is hiway/freeway.

Like all cars, recommended tire inflation is listed in the driver's side door jam.

There are, of course, variations if you want a harder/smoother ride and personal preference and all that, but recommended inflation is always in the same place.

I run about 33PSI when cold and once it warms up. It sits between 35-36PSI.

I refer back to the buddy who swears 35 psi is correct. He runs 18x7.5" BBS with 235/45R18 Potenza RE050A on 8G Accord coupe. He was tire jockey so I'll take his word for it.

I bought my 2009 SH-AWD a few weeks ago with ~42,000 miles on it. It came from the dealer with a full tank of gas and the first thing I did was re-set the counters. I got 16MPG over the life of the tank (City/Highway). I then re-filled it with 91 octane and so far with the same driving, I am getting 23MPG. I never realized low octane could make such a difference and I am shocked the dealer put low test in the car.

^lol... no need to be shocked. This is one of the many ways dealers deal with operating cost... I had the exact same experience where the dealer put in lower octane gas (regular, maybe?) in a brand new car... I wanted to choke those fools (j/k) although Acura does mention it is ok to use regular gas every once in a while.

I run 31-32 psi cold. Went from Maine to New York yesterday about 330lbs of extra weight (other than myself), mostly cruised 70-75mph and did 451 miles on that tank. I know I could have squeezed out another 50miles but didn't want to cut it too close not knowing how my car would react with the extra weight.

Disclaimer: I pump an extra gallon during fill ups and during the above mentioned trip I did a few angry passes (100-110) by rows of slow motorist on the left lane. I will be increasing my psi to 34-35 but wanted a comfy ride for Maine driving.

I noticed cruise control greatly increased my MPG, very rarely will you be able to beat the ECU; even with a light foot.
