Rust,Rust and more Rust on Wheels
Rust,Rust and more Rust on Wheels
First post!
Can anyone suggest something to cover or clean the rust that seems to be appearing on my rotors especially on the back wheels....its such an eye sore...
Had the car for almost a year now...didn't drive it in the snow...just 8K KM so far.
The rust started to appear within months of buying the car.
Told the car dealership and they told me that others have complained too...they have reported this to Honda and are waiting for a solution...I doubt that!
Thanks....
BTW...this is my first foreign car...Always had an GM...I still bought a 2010 GMC Acadia a few months ago...got two small kids...not driving with them in the Acura

I believe there is a TSB out to fix that. Basically the dealer should be able to clean the rust off the rotors, and paint them with a high heat engine paint (or something like that). The 2009's had that problem, they fixed it in the 2010's. Check the Problems & Fixes thread for more talk about it.

The common fix to this mentioned by numerous members is to actually paint the hubs. It's a lot of work (relatively), but it eliminates the problem (unless the stealer is willing to do this for you).

TSB = Technical Service Bulletin.
It's not like a recall - but nomally something that just needs a fix.
Here's a better description:
Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) are issued by vehicle manufacturers to help automotive technicians diagnose and repair problems reported by consumers and repair shops. It's amazing how many fixes are found in these bulletins that can't be found anywhere else. Thousands of bulletins are issued by car manufacturers every year.
TSBs contain up-to-date factory fixes for difficult to diagnose problems such as rough idles, intermittent stalls, hard starts, and all kinds of "shakes", "rattles" and "clunks" that can sometimes drive you nuts. TSBs describe service procedures that may improve performance, reduce future breakdowns, or show a factory authorized modification for your vehicle.
This is the thread you want.

i had my "fixed" by acura after making a scene at the dealership. they finally agreed to do it out of their own pocket after a lot of frustration and yelling. even so, my fronts are still fine but my rears are just as bad as they were. the used a high heat paint, 5 coats on the front and 4 on the back. well i guess my only option now is to get aftermarket ceramic pads and rotors and some nice calipers that dont look like a chunk of steel behind the wheel

To this day...I get nothing but postive feedback about this car...the only negative I do get is about the back wheels..."oh why you got rust on these already?"
I'm at a loss for words.....
What are you talking about?
I have a 3G TL. Every time I wash the car, the rotors get a thin coat of rust on them.
That rust comes off the first time I put the brakes on and stop the car. Then they are shiny again.
Is there something different about the 4G rotors? Doesn't the rust come off as soon as you drive it?

I will post pics once allowed on this site...not the shiny part of the rotors...I know the rust comes off when you brake and stuff after it rains or you wash your car...taking about the steel part of the wheel base...sorry my car parts lingo isn't great...

When you see an 09' you'll know what we are talking about. It's not the rotors but more the hubs and oxidation of the calipers. When I was looking at a 2010 TL at the dealer I asked what was the difference between the 09 and 10 TL and that was the first thing he showed me. If you see it in person it is really quite an eyesore.
At least they figured it out for the 2010 versions.
I was just at the dealer for my bad front drive shaft and asked about the rust. The dealer acknowledged it was a problem and said he would check to see if there was a new TSB out yet on it. What have they done differently on the 2010's to keep the rust away?
AS much as I like perfectionin my car, with as solid and trouble free as the 09 AWD has been (at least for me) compared to all 5 of my 3G TLs if this is the biggest complaint I can find for me then I am truly happy with this car!
Is this how others have it looking? My front rotors just got replaced under warranty a few weeks ago, and you can clearly tell all the new rotors must be a different material as you see no signs of rust at all, yet my back ones, are a whole different story.
Also - my calipars are starting to look rusty, is that the same for others?
Check out my pics;
Pics 1/2 are my front left and right that were replaced and pics 3/4 were just machined. I think I am going to email Acura and the dealership to complain to have the rear 2 replaced as well as it looks very ugly.

Mine rears were worst then yours (pics 3/4). My car sat on the lot for a while as it was their display car, on a concrete slabe just outside the showroom. So my rust was REALLY bad and half moon shaped as that's where the water sat whenever it rained.
They painted it with high heat epoxy and it has held up. It's been 6 months now and lasted through the nasty Northeas winter.

That number 4 is really looking especially bad. If it's still under warranty, I'd ask them to take care of it.
It's a common enough problem, especially it seems on earlier cars (09s) that Acura should fix it under warranty. It seems most who have had this problem seem able to get their dealer to resolve it.
Good luck.

Note that even though I bought mine in Northern NJ, it was addressed by Acura of Boston since I was in the area. My local dealer said they have to call Acura and get approval first. While waiting for their "approval" I was in Boston and they took care of it as a courtesy.
UPDATE: So I took my case to Honda Canada, they got pictures (the same ones above) and told them its unacceptable and how the 2010 materials look to be different then 2009.
First I got a "there is no way the dealership would put 2010 rotors on your 2009, they aren't authorized" I took that as BS
Then I got "its a cosmetic issue, and not causing any issues"
I told them it just looks so bad on a $50,000 car.
Then finally - my dealership got approved by Honda Canada to replace my rear rotors too now.
So lesson learned - keep fighting, take it up the food chain, and I think Honda/Acura has got many complaints about this as it did get passed to their technical department from what I was told.

Excellent News
I received a phone call from the service manager at my dealer. He said that he has recieved authorization to replace all 4 rotors. This is after I followed wmahmud's approach and called Acura Customer Relations at 1-888-922-8729. They called my dealer and had me come in to take pictures. Initially, acura's regional guy said to paint them, but now they are going to replace them. I'm going away but will post when its complete.

Different wheels would probably hide that problem.
