Rusty Rotors?
Rusty Rotors?
I got my TL when it first came out, and i've noticed (rear especially) that the rotors are rusty as hell, front arent so bad, just around the edges, which i guess is reasonable..but the rears are almost entirely rusted...I seen a 05 TSX today in my neighborhood that showed very little rust, so I'm a little ticked off that my 09 is showing signs of rust so soon...anyone else experiencing the same issue? I'll post pics up tomorrow
i've had my tl for 1 1/2 months and no signs of rust yet, and it's been raining here for over a month! i think they might have fixed this problem on the newer ones, at least that's what the dealership told me.

Wait, are we talking about rust on the surface of the rotor where it comes in contact with the brake pad? Or just rust on the edges and the hub-face? Because rust on those last two places I mentioned is perfectly normal and acceptable and is going to happen unless you have stainless steel or titanium rotors (they've got them for the NSX!) or aluminum hats for them.
I got my 09 TL in July and I noticed that someone hit my door the 3rd week I had it. So I decided to bring it in to the dealership see if they could do anything and ask them about the rust on my rear rotors. They fix my door and also told me that another dealership had the same problems with the rotors, and all they did was clean them up and repainted them. It looks good now and it was all covered under the warranty.

Had my rear rotors painted today at the dealer... looks absolutely perfect... they used 1500 degree engine paint and matched the color perfectly. The shop manager thought the rust on the rears (noticeable on pretty much all the 09 TL's on the lot) may be due to the smaller/thinner rotor dimensions on the rears vs. the fronts.
Went to my dealership today...service writer said it was perfectly normal for the rust....I showed him an 07 TSX with minimal rust told me it was a different car, i couldnt compare..he said he didnt have any FWD 09's to compare and that the SH-AWD had different roters so he couldnt tell.....so i waited there looking around, and another RBP 09 came into the wash bay....same mileage (give or take a grand) and very minimal rust, even NY plates as well, so they cant claim climate issues....escalated issue to service manager, he came out took pictures of just my car, and told me he wouldnt swap them, or repaint/sand them, that it was a "honda warranty issue, had to call the rep"..he proceeded to look at an 08 TL, minimal rust as well....then turned around "AH! look, this ones all rusty.." ....it was an 04 RSX, hardly a basis for comparison.
We left it at he'll call/email his honda rep, and they'll eventually get back to me and tell me to come all the way back so the honda rep could see my car and "most likely deny you anyway"...which is bull, because the same car as mine didnt have the rust and he wouldnt take pictures of that car because "honda doesnt care what the other cars look like, just yours"..
so needless to say, im not very happy at the moment with my dealer

^ that was the other 09 TL with 13,500 miles, rear driver side which is totally liveable and understandable....the service director didnt want to take pictures, so I whipped out my shiney iPhone 3GS and took a few pics of the other car....totally wasnt impressed with the escalation between service writer and director

My dealership wanted to get my rotors powdercoated but the acura rep's said no due to a liability issue, but agreed to high heat engine paint, so I dropped my car off this morning and got a white 08 TL (base) as a loaner...I miss my 4G already
I have the same issue with my rear rotors the face is starting to rust and the car only has 800mi. Spoke to my dealer and he said that it is normal. After calling Acura Corporate they spoke to my dealer and they have agreed to re-paint the rear rotors. I will be bringing the car in next week for service. Hopefully, they do a good job on the color match. Will post an update once I get them painted
Got my car back at 5 tonight (dropped off at 9am, got oil changed there, car wash, and rotor paint)
It looks a hell of lot better. They had to leave a little ring of rust on the "wearable" part of the rotor, but its minimal. The main hub and main ring of the rotor are painted with a flat gray high heat exhaust paint. All 4 were painted so there was never a color match issue. Overall was pretty impressed with this "goodwill" offer from Acura. I'll try to get some pics posted tomorrow since its already getting dark.

Nevermind, ran out and got a few pics of each rear rotor...I couldnt edit the post so I had to make a new one...mods can merge if they can

I had the same problem with my rotors. I was not satisfied and called my dealer today and I went in shortly after. After about 2 hours, they had removed the rust and refinished all 4 rotors. I was more than satisfied. Glad yours worked out too RoyalBlue09
I didn't realize this was so common. It is bad that some dealers are not willing to fix the problem without a person calling corporate.

Just got my car, brand new, and there are rust on the rotors already! I used to have this problem on my old Acura Integra. You would think after all these years, and after going to these highly visible rotor type rims they would get it right. But I am glad to hear that the dealerships are fixing it right. I am a bit worried about what the salt from Alberta winters will do to the rotors over the winter. Any Canadians out there worried about this?
Ya, I have the same problem as many of the other members. Brought the concern up with my dealership. Response was to use a mild wheel cleaner. As if that is going to remove the rust and prevent reoccurance. I will be contacting ACURA customer service and ask for a proper fix.
I bought my car on 8/15/09 and one rear drum already had rust. The car had been sitting on the dealers lot since February so road salt is not necessarily the cause. I will bring it to the dealers attention on my first visit.
Every 4G I've seen has this problem, to a varying degree. I had mine at the dealer this past Wed. and brought it to the service advisor's attention. He said he checked all the service bulletins and one does not exist for this issue. This eyesore is "normal" according to the service dept. at Pohanka Acura in Chantilly, Va. Obviously, Acura suppliers paint the rotor hats with silver paint, but do a crappy job at it and we're supposed to live with it. My rotors were rusty on DELIVERY with 26 miles on the odometer. If there really is a TSB for this issue, can someone post it? I would love to have a copy of it next time I go in for service.
I too would like to know more about this "TSB", since, as an actual tech, I've never heard about it... I check ISIS, as well as the daily messages, every morning, and just rechecked now, and there's def nothing that I've found relating to this matter.
Additionally, we've had our share of customers come in with the same complaint about the rears, and we've just been sanding them down and cleaning them up. But regardless, as far as I have seen, this appears to me "normal" (expected?) on the 4G TLs. Heck, even my boss's 09 FWD Tech has it, though he doens't seem to be all that bothered. I'm not saying it's ok, rather just mentioning that we're seeing it too.

Picked mine up at Pohanka as well, my car had 76 miles on it at delivery and rust pretty bad on the rear rotors. I thought it was strange but more worrisome was pulsation during hard braking. I complained to the dealer and they told me they would resurface the rotors. This was totally unacceptable to me as it would shorten the life of the rotors. After talking to the Acura PR person the dealer reluctantly agreed to replace the rotors. Will let you know when it is repaired.
I had slotted rotors and they still warped, so this is not true. It was also on a big brake kit with 13" rotors so it makes it even more bizzarre that the rotors would warp within a year like they did.
I was wondering if anyone has any updates on this one. I have been watching this thread for a while now (been a bit lazy to join), still waiting for the Service Bulletin.
I was at my dealer today discussing a way forward. He told me that in consult with Acura, they will not do the refinishing. I will be sending an email to acura via myacura.ca. I will post if anything comes of it.
I also took a look at the other new TLs on the lot. They all have extensive rust on the rear rotor hubs. I would estimate even more than on mine with 13500kms.

My new dealer (not where I bought the car from) painted mine out of courtesy. They also said that it should be the responsibility of the dealer where I bought the car from before they hand the car over to me so they are back charging them.
The dealer where I purchased mine from hemmed and hawed and said that they needed Corp. approval and that they will put in the request in, blah, blah, blah. They never got back to me. The new dealer did it on the first time I took my car in for service (not planned).

while my car was in for regular service I asked them if there was anything they could do about the rust on the rotors. the service rep said yes, we can sand them down and repaint them under warranty. got the car back they did all 4 and they look great
it is nice to have a dealership take care of you. its not like we are buying kia's or something.
