Rear thump sound

Good morning All,

I purchased a new 2013 Acura tl 6 mt three weeks ago. I've noticed a pretty distinctive thump or knock from the right rear of the car when driving over bumps, it almost sounds like a bad shock. The car has 600 miles on it so I would assume that the shocks are good. Any ideas. Thanks!

Bart

I have been experiencing the same issue. The 3rd gen TL's had the same issue and were issued a TSB which called for replacing the struts. I will be replacing my strut next weekend and I will let you know if it fixes the issue.

I have an 09 tl fwd with 20,000 miles on it with the same issue that you have. i took it to the dealer about a year ago they replaced the rear struts but till this day i still have the same problem. every time that my car is at the dealer for what ever reason and they give me a tl as a loaner i hear the same noise...but when i get a tsx or a rdx i don't hear that noise so to me i think it's a suspension problem with the tl's. This shit is not cool.

^^ The ILX and the 2G RDX is having similar issues....I am starting to think its not a bad shock but either poorly designed bushings or mounts or something. This seems to be spreading to all Acura - not good at all.

I just looked in the RDX section. Looks like there has been success with replacing the struts.

Update:

I put a new oem strut in the car and the noise is completely gone. I only went around the block, so I will update again after I drive to work.

Thanks for the update....It will be interesting to see if it last, but also, was it the same problem as the RDX and ILX. As you saw in the RDX section, "Hand-filer" has been contacted by Acura Canada and they opened a Tech Case to try and solve the issue. That is usually a good sign...

Another thing I wanted to mention is that the strut I removed had a different part number than the new one I put on. I cross checked the new strut to make sure I ordered the right one and the part number is correct. Not sure if the part number is different because it came on the car new or if they revised the struts.

Took mine to the dealer few months ago and they charged me ~50 for diagnostic testing cause they "didn't hear anything".

My noise it back after replacing the rear shock. I took the rear seat out to see if something was loose behind it, but could not find anything. I then drove around without the rear seat in place and can definitely hear some type of thud sound coming from the trunk area. I have been under the car countless times and have never been able to find anything loose. I am starting to believe it is a characteristic of the car.

I wonder if the people who have installed after market shocks are having the same problem as the people with oem shocks?

I have been having the same issue for the last 6-8 months. I haven't had the damn dealer look at it cuz the stealers end up charging diagnostic fee. Has anyone pinpointed this down? Are the structs/shocks covered under warranty? I have a 2012 with only 16k miles.

You guys with these shocks blowing in the rear do you often have lots of people in the car? It's very uncharacteristic of Honda/Acura shocks to blow like that. Makes me worry about lowering with sport springs on oem shocks...

I took my 2013 TL AWD-Tech package with 1800 miles on it to dealer experiencing the thumping noise at low speeds over driveway cracks. They are replacing both rear shocks. Not what I expected from Acura.

I have the same issue. Driving out of my neighborhood daily over street cracks, and it sounds like a muted "pop" or thump. I only seem to hear it when driving below 40mph. Annoying as hell - never had a car that made that sort of sound over minor bumps. I've reported it twice to the dealer and they said everything under there (rear suspension) was tight. I had one of their loaner cars - same year TL as mine - and it made the same exact sound, so I agree with others that it may be a characteristic of the car. Frustrating.
