Noisy Electric Power Steering--2012 TL
Noisy Electric Power Steering--2012 TL
Just got my 2012 TL FWD with Tech package. I like the car but have some questions about the EPS noise. When I was parking my car few days ago, I heard a weird noise from my steering wheel. It sounds like a piece of plastic rubbing on another. It happens when I turn the wheel lock to lock while the car is moving slowly or standing still. When I put the car on Park and turn my wheels, the sound is noticable and when put on Drive, step on brakes and turn the wheels, the sound is louder.
I went to my dealer yesterday and he checked the car. He said the sound is from the EPS motor and is quite normal. I also tried 3 other TLs (1 test drive car and 2 new ones), they all make the same noise.
I also feel that my steering wheel is a little bit tighter than the car I test drove. Especially when the speed is low.Maybe that's just an autosuggestion?
Does anyone else have the same problam?

it's kind of like a "wooshing" noise of sorts if you turn the wheel hard/quickly at slow speeds in a parking lot?? i heard it in a 4G loaner i drove. it's rather annoying. i asked one of the SA's at my dealer about it. they said they know about it and tried to see if they could do anything about it....nope. it's normal. the EPS motor is just noisy at slow parking lot speeds.
I have a 2011 TL and I have the swishing sound when I turn the steering wheel quickly as in a parking lot to cut the wheels in the opposite direction.
Dealer says it is the parts inside the wheel and they all do it, nothing mentioned about the electrical PS pump. I do find this unacceptable, but we are stuck with it.

better, yet after reading your list of complaints on another thread...just sell the car and get something you like. you registered on here and your first posts proceed to rant about how unhappy you are about your car. really?? everything is subjective when it comes to what people want or need in a car. my first question that came to mind, "did you even test drive the car??" you said you did and now you know what else to look for in a future purchase when you test drive the car. perhaps you should spend more time thinking about all the pros and cons of your potential purchase. every car maker has their own issues with their vehicles. just like life...it's a compromise. /OT (sorry if i upset the mods).
there is no pump. it's an electric motor. and unfortuantely the noise is "normal". just turn your music up louder. hopefully the next gen TL(X) will "fix" all of these little things.

I posted to see if my issues were unique or common. If you wish to defend poor engineering, go for it. I won't do it for for any brand.

This is VERY annoying and unfortunately I experience it as well. Let's get this to Acura's attention so that they send a mass recall out and fix this annoying noise. We certainly should not have to deal with this in a 40k plus car. Insane when you think about it. I spoke to the dealer about this too and they confirmed that it's "normal" and I just don' like that answer. Anyways, let's get this thread bumping and make people aware of the issue and let Acura know this is horse shit that is going on. This will be the SOLE reason why I will NOT buy my car outright at the end of my lease. Thanks Acura for sucking.
You know what folks... you would rather have a bit of noise on the electric steering than a massive steering fluid leak all over the catalytic converters causing fire. OK, I am exaggerating, but I see that the new Accord has the same electric steering system on it.
Bet you, even tho I haven't checked it out yet, its the same electric motor part number! Expect a massive complaint from Accord owners to give them back power steering with a pump and fluid? I think not! It gets too hot in the engine bay and things make noises. If its not the steering wheel motor its the valves, if its not the valves its the air intake, if its not the air intake its... and it goes on and on and on. Unfortunately Acura is Honda with lots of noise insulation in places where Honda usually doesn't bother (like under the A pillars). I give Acura some credit for fixing Honda's annoying issues, but boy oh boy don't be fooled. Its still a Honda, drives like one, makes the same noises.
Sorry for the rant.

Well Tony, I think no offense your post is absolutely insane. You're trying to compare a honda and an acura? Get real bro. There is almost a 25k price difference and it should show more. Acura should not have this issue with steering and if you experience it for yourself it's not a pleasant situation, considering that I've had an acura for over 10 yrs (various models and years) and this is the first issue I 've had with steering. It's annoying at minimal and distracting at most, does BMW and Audi have these problems with steering? Does Lexus have this issue with steering? All of those answers would be NO. To not have a recall on this is just flat out stupid. These are the cars that Acura wants to compare to right? Quickly becoming a joke with no end in sight....

Why not just dump the car right away, rather than continue to suffer from the motor noise until the lease end ?
Believe me, there is nothing worst in life than to drive around in the car that you hate so much every day.

Perhaps a topic for another thread... but I see we agree that Acuras need an edge that they don't have right now due to issues normally not found in luxury cars. However, trust me, the Audi S4 isn't that far behind in terms of issues. So what you tell people there? Go get a Passat? LOL.
PS. I am just going to wait for the new Accord to mature for a couple of years and then switch back to Accords again.
