Angry My car sounds like a Subie WRX?!? -- 2010 TL SHAWD

Wassup all! I don't I ever had to post here since owning my 2010 Acura TL SH-AWD 6 SPD Manual when I got her new on 09/30/09. I never really had any mechanical issues with her or anything like that. Had to replace the clutch, flywheel, pressure plate at 87k, not gonna blame my fiancee on that, but she got used to driving the car Lolz.

Anyways, I currently have roughly 933XX miles on the car. Mods mechanical wise is just a K&N Drop filter and the Prototype ATLP Cat-Back NON-RES Exhaust. I've had those two installed since 2012 and had no issues. My problem is, after I washed my car at the self-car wash my car started to sound like a Subie WRX! However, I did the whole 'drive off after washing the car' kind of thing to air it out and it drove fine. After I let it sit for about an hour and I took my fiancee to her school on the freeway, it suddenly started to sound like a Subie!

It idles fine and initially it didn't have any CEL or any other warning lights. Once we got to her university, I parked the car and let it sit for about an hour and half. Started it up, then the CEL, VSA, SHAWD, Hill Start Assist lights went off.

Once I got back to our place, I disconnected the battery to see if an ECU reset could fix it, nothing. It seems to accelerate okay and it idles fine with no dips or anything, however, I did a test on 6th gear going about 30mph and pressed on the accel and it bogged to a point where it almost stalled. Normally, it wouldn't do that. Also, it does seem like I would have to press in the accel a little more to get the speed I want to maintain on the freeway.

So, I'm a little stumped, any help would be great. Thanks guys and gals!

Also, it seems like the Subie sounds only comes on when I press on the accel, it doesn't sound like a Subie when I downshift or decelerate.

Sorry about the first sentence, just learned to type in English :P

I'm guessing cylinder misfires, but you need to read the codes with an OBDII reader. If it is cylinder misfires, start by looking at the hoses around the intake manifold, the air filter and box to see if anything is clogged, cracked, etc. if nothing wrong there then it may need more advanced diagnosis...

Also check the battery. But do read the codes because it may be someone totally different.

PS. Wish my '09 sounded like a WRX

Hey Del, if you can get the codes read at a autoparts store, it will help us GREATLY!

right now, we're guessing on what could be the problem...
Everything from cylinder misfires to an exhaust leak is running through my head.

if you can get those codes read and report them here, it will greatly narrow down on what could be the problem

Thanks for the advice, I'll go to O'Reily's and see if they do the diagnostics for free and find the code.

This sounds like the O2 sensor(s) is/are acting funny.

Like Justnspace said, pulling out the error code(s) will help the diagnoses tremendously.

All I could do is schedule an appointment with the dealer. I also noticed that it seems to be in some sort of safe mode, won't let me rev past 4k RPM.

in the mean time, take a look at your oil level.

that cams inside the engine need oil to operate in the high RPM ranges.

you are correct in thinking that the car is in limp mode and wont let you pass 4k RPM.

Thanks for the response justnspace, the oil level is good, I had checked that as well.

I haven't done any thorough check on the hoses yet though, don't know what I'm looking for.

I probably should check underneath the car too, sounds like there is some sort of rattling near the exhaust piping that might be loose, maybe the O2 sensor near the cat

If you have like a Autozone type auto store by you. Maybe you can get a free code read and see what error codes it's throwing to put the car in limp mode. At least if you decide to take it to a dealer to fix. You have an idea and not get taken for a ride for the fix if it's out of warranty.

I'm betting on spark plug ejection.

would account for scooby sounds and bogging.

When you went to the car wash did you wash under the hood? Is it possible water got in around your spark plugs?

You were correct, it has something to do with the coil plug as it went bad, #2 bank.

The dealer replaced it, cost was $263 includes diagnose, labor, and parts.

Now it runs normal. Only mechanical issue I had since purchasing new on 09/03/2009. And I'm still on my first set of brake pads after 93600 miles, Lolz Thanks for the help guys!
