Can someone check to see if they have a ticking or knocking sound coming from the engine when cold. After the car has sat overnight, open the hood and start the car and see if a faint knocking or ticking sound is audible from the engine bay.

I found this video of a 3rd Generation TL(similar engine with a larger bore and capacity) and apparently this is very common in Honda engines. Some people have dubbed VTEC as Valve Ticking Engine Clatters or something like that. Mine sounds the same as the video, just not as loud but am thinking it will get louder as the car gets older with more miles. FYI, I have just over 1100 miles and the car build on the door jam says 07/09. Thanks,

 

I have not noticed any ticking in my tl engine, nor my now gone 06 tsx. What oil are you using?

 

The oil is the factory fill oil that is supposedly a "special" kind that the manual specifically warns to not drain early. I have never kept the factory fill on any new vehicle I have owned for more than 1500 miles and its not going to start now. I have an appointment with the dealer for an oil change tuesday, so we will see what they say. I am pretty sure they'll say that its normal for that engine to sound that way. At least it will be documented so if something happens down the road regarding this issue, they don't have that dumb founded look on their faces. Plus it give me an excuse to dump the factory fill oil too.
