Just for a laugh

I'm sure this sort of thing would never happen to an Acura owner.......
My neighbour lady has a cute little BMW Z4. She has had it for 10 years. Bought it locally and has had it serviced regularly at the dealer where she bought it. Recently her check engine light came on. She called the dealer. They advised her to come in.
She went to the dealer and they charged her 160 dollars to tighten her gas cap! Nice reward for her loyalty.
Perhaps she does not have the internet at her house.

I believe $150 is a standard fee just for diagnostics at any luxury dealer once warranty is out. The $150 does go towards the bill if you decide to have it fix there. If not... $150 down the drain

She should had went to Autozone for a free diagnostics, they would had tighten that right up for her

ya know, we as car enthusiast take for granted of our knowledge.

I know several people regardless of make and model get screwed at the dealer because they simply dont know automotive knowledge.

same goes for house repairs...
if you dont know how to do it, or know some one who has the skills for it, you'll be paying out your ass.

simply because some people dont have the skill set or knowledge to do it themselves and that's perfectly fine and okay!

This happened to my Mom the other day. She called me and asked if she needs to do a transmission flush, brake fluid change, and power steering fluid change, all at 16K miles. I told her not to ever take that car to the dealer cause they will pull shit like this. It's a 2015 Nissan Sentra, no reason for any of those services......

Service writers make commission off these services so of course they want to upsell them even to folks who don't need it.

At 16k miles that service "advisor" should be ashamed of themselves. I would go back myself and give them a piece of my mind if they tried pulling that one on my parents.

True

My home A/C has stopped working twice in the last month. First time $79 for a condenser fan and two capacitors. Second time, $18 for a new contactor...all purchased at a local HVAC supplier. Those two trips would have been several hundred dollars from a service company. Just a little electrical knowledge and a couple of YouTube videos needed.

Exactly. Needa do brakes on your car? 1000's of tutorials on youtube. Go to AutoZone, rent (for free might I add) a toolset and a torque wrench and you're good to go. Save yourself a few hundred right there. Oil is a bit different as there's only a ~15 dollar difference between DIY and my dealer so I'd gladly pay the 15-20 bucks for the 1-1.5hrs it takes. I just changed my sparkplugs and it took all of 35 minutes to research, watch a video or two, and go do it.
