Getting rid of the rust from my rotors
Hi,
I live near Queens, NY and was wondering if there is a place that I can take my '10 TL-AWD tech to get the rotors cleaned. There's a huge build up of dust and i hate the way it looks. I tried brillo pads but it didnt take off much. I really don't want to change my rotors but I may have to. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Have a great weekend!

dude, ill teach you how to do it.
1. buy rust proof or caliper paint from your nearest auto parts store
2. buy a wire brush that attaches to a drill or a dremel (depends on what you have)
3. take off one wheel at a time and take wire brush to the rusted areas. make sure to not touch surface areas where your brake pads are touching. Take of all the rust.
4. depending on if your using spray can or brush on, make sure to tape up the areas around the rotors that you do not want to paint. Do not get it on surface areas where brake pads are contacting.
5. wait till dry and put back wheels on.
6. repeat steps 1-5 on each of the wheels.
this isnt hard, takes about 20 mins each wheel to do excluding wait time to dry.
if you buy rotors when there is absolutely nothing mechincally wrong with your rotors then its just a waste of money for parts and labor.
any questions, pm me.

you can do this with less than 20 bux for all 4 rotors.
no need to pay someone 200 bux for them to just take off your wheel and paint it with a spray can when a 12 year old can do this.

This must be an issue you people up North have to deal with. I've never had any issues with rust on rotors on any of the cars I've owned. The only time I see rust is when the car sits too long, but after I take it around the neighborhood it's all gone.

Rotor covers
So I have an 09 w/ the rust issue - what do you think of rotor covers? Too cheesy? I don't want my car to look like crap, but IDK if I have the time to paint them... Suggestions are appreciated!

I've contemplated taking my 09 to the stealership (certified) and griping about it to see if it gets me anywhere. Probably better off pounding sand.
Really - cleaning these things up and spraying them down with paint is cake. If you're feeling ambitious, it cleans that wheel well up a lot busting the calipers off the hubs, hitting them with some brake cleaner, and getting a good 4 or 5 coats of high temp paint on them as well.
Keep some paint thinner or gasoline around and an old rag to wipe down the braking surface and get rid of the overspray.

Not sure if it makes a difference that the car is kept in a garage when it's not driven?

Cheesy? Yes!
Had a set of those on my wife's 92 Maxima. Found that yes they keep the brake dust off the wheel, but the build up of brake dust behind the wheel was aweful. Makes for less brake pad life.
Also I find that depending on the wheel design, they look cheesy with todays wheels because they are of the open spoke design and you can really see them whereas in years past, wheel designs were that you could not see the rotors so it didn't look so bad.
Also I find that brake dust is not as bad as it was years ago, unless you never wash your car. As long as you wash your car and claen the wheels on a regular basis it should be no problem. But rust on the rotors is a whole other problem!
Ok that's all of my thoughts and suggestions!

I'm calling my dealership's service dept today (Frankel Acura) - I need to make an appt for another problem I'm having w/ my TL, and I'm going to ask them about the rotors as well. Maybe they can pain them - my car is CPO, so I know it won't be perfect, but the rust is hideous

Hey guys,
I haven't had time to paint the rotors. I called my dealer and he said unfortunately they can't do anything and painting them is the only option. You pay 40K + for a car you would expect a better answer.

nothing is perfect in this world.
deal with it yourself.. its a small diy that requires 2 hrs of your time.. if you cant do this simple project, you shouldnt even be modding cars..

I'm not trying to mod my car but i guess when I have some free time I will have to do it myself...and my gripe about the 40K car thing is that last year I had the sunroof rattle issue and it took them 6 tries to finally fix it and now the rust shows up more and more..that's all

good point on the nothing is perfect part, but I would be kind of annoyed seeing rust on rotors on a car with 2900 miles on it. You pay for luxury and this should be taken care of as a courtesy. I have noticed mines has some sort of paint from the factory, they should make it more durable.

50k+ bmw has issues right off the lot and so as 80k+ benz as well. they have much more issues than just rust. My dads ML350 had like 3k on the ODO and it had to go back to dealer because it wouldn't start.
but as far as rust issues, acura should have done something about it early on in the stages of 4g coming out. my 2010 has no rust issues and im going 13k on it already.

Just joined acurazine, bought a used 2009sh-awd tl from New York. Rust on the Rotors. I live in Az,I bought a bottle of super Iron out and using a old toothbrush, have scrubbed the rust once a week for the 6 months I have owned the car, rust is gone on 2 and the other 2 is 75% gone. I figure another 2 months will do it. I haven't seen any negative symptoms in using it. I live in AZ so the rust doesn't come back.

The car was making a terrible noise, like it was getting stuck in gear, while driving between 20-40mph. Turned out it was low, and extremely dirty, transmission fluid. Full flush, problem gone. Not what I expected, but I'm glad it was something easy and relatively inexpensive to fix!

I hate the rust on my rotors. I dont trust my skills to take a wheel off myself. scary stuff hahaha for me at least.
Is it easy to take a wheel off a car? take a rotor off and the rust is also in the little holes on the rotor, how on earthd o I get in there?!
