Fob holder won't reset after pulling key out

Hey all,

I have a 2009 TL SH-AWD. Recently I parked the car and turned off the ignition. I pulled the key out as usual (didn't force it and it provided no in-usual resistance). My display came up saying to remove the key and the chimes were going off even though the key was out. I read on a post that you can pull out a clip inside the fob holder so I did that and the problem stopped. AWESOME!!! Problem is that the part you pull out doesn't reset itself again after you pull the key out, it comes up with the display and chimes again. I figure before I go get raped to replace this I may as well try my luck in hopes one of you may have a resolution.

If the key slot has worn out and require replacing, then don't use the key slot to start the car.

Switch on the keyless start system, and use the key as proximity sensing instead.

Yeah, I understand. It's just the fact that its broken and I'd rather it not be. I'm willing to take it in but would rather try to fix it myself first.

Not too long ago, there was a thread that the OP was having similar key slot problem, and was also planning to take apart the dash to replace the key slot DIY.

Don't know how it went. Do a search if you're interested.

I appreciate the link, I went out and tried it as described but couldn't get it to reset on its own when you shut the ignition off. Ill take it in and post what they say it was on here for future reference. Thanks for the ideas.

guys, this seems to be a common problem and happened to me this morning.

Nothing is broken and nothing needs to be replaced. You do not need to go to the dealer.

Reach into the key slot with 2 fingers and you will feel something that feels like 2 small teeth. They are connected to the part that slides in and out when you insert your key. Those teeth hold your key in.
What has happened is when your key was last removed the assembly that holds your key in did not slide out with it therefore the car thinks the key is still inserted. Thats why you are getting the "please remove key" message on the MID.
You just need to manually pull it out. I did it in less than 5 seconds and I did not need to apply a lot of pressure or pull too hard. You do not need any special tools. If your fingers are too large to fit in the key slot I suggest you find a nice lady with smaller fingers to assist you

Yeah, this worked for me too, years later. Hold the key fob flat in your palm and look at the edges, and you'll see a small notch on either side that hooks into the "teeth" inside the slot. That'll give you an idea of where to feel for, and pull.
