The extended warranty scam

To all those that consider buying an extended warranty, DON'T!
I signed up for a "bumper-to-bumper", deluxe, no-deductible extended warranty, but when I go to my Acura dealer, they tell me that I must pay for diagnostics (e.g. $180), just to see what the problem is, and if it's covered by the warranty. Of course, they blame the insurance company that issues the warranty. But, when I was in the infamous "back room", everything was explained differently. Now, when I asked them, "if my car had a problem during Acura's warranty period, would you charge me diagnostics?" The answer, of course is, "this is not an Acura warranty". Beware, consumers!

I have an extended warranty I bought through the dealer and found out it doesn't cover rattles. I had a rattle from my moonroof for which I had to pay $300 (they offered to do it for $375 as a discount from $600 and I talked them down a bit). Anything to make a buck, huh?!?

Get your money back on the third party warranty. (They MUST refund the remaining balance if you cancel early)

Get an Acura Care warranty, you will then be covered with no issues.

Future, don't purchase a warranty unless it is from the manufacturer.

BTW, I got a 8/100,00 on my AWD TL Advance for $1200 so bargain the warranty down from the dealer or try another dealer (same warranty)

I was never offered an Acura Care warranty, just this "whatever company" (that nobody knows) warranty, and it's almost over (120K/7 years - I drive a lot, but almost all highway). They wanted to do expensive diagnostics, just to repair a broken speaker on the front door, which you could tell was broken by just listening to the radio. They wouldn't fix my flat tire (I have tire and wheel warranty also), because they wanted to sell me new tires, etc. etc. Now my turn signal is broken, they want diagnostic fees. My battery was out at 4 years, and it's a 3 year full/5 year prorated warranty. "No, it's not covered". So I got a top-of-the-line battery from Autozone for less money and free install (of course I gave the employee a tip).

your problem is that you bought it from third party.. get the warranty from dealer direct..

case closed.. op lacked info when purchasing warranty, he pretty much screwed himself over.

Well Potz, that's pretty harsh. The dealer sold it to him. The dealer should take some responsibility. It wouldn't kill them to waive the diagnostic fees.
My wife has a Camry and the serpentine belt broke.
The dealer wanted to charge for diagnosing the problem.
I opened the hood, pulled out the broken belt and handed it to them
and said, there's your diagnosis. They waived the fee.
Any dealer that deserves your business will be flexible and accommodating.

The case is wide open. The dealer sold me the third party warranty and nobody offered an Acura Care warranty (maybe it didn't exist in 2009). So, I told them that if they give me the runaround, the BMW dealer is just around the corner, and my next car will not be an Acura.

That's is the issue with third party warranties,it is full of exclusions and limitations. All in the small print.

I assume that your car was not purchased at an Acura dealership hence the third party warranty. Not sure why you would tell them that the BMW dealership is around the corner since if it isn't an Acura approved warranty then they are under no obligation to waive any charges etc.(perhaps i am missing something in your post) .

Good of you to give the heads up to those not in the know.

Acura Care had been around as far back as 2001, when I bought my 2G TL-S from an Acura dealership.

It is likely that your dealership is able to get more kickback from selling 3rd party extended warranty, than from selling the factory extended warranty.

we need to confirm some stuff first..

1. did you purchase your car from a acura dealer?

2. what was the name of the warranty that was sold to you?

3. was it new or used? CPO?
