Electronic Power Steering failure
Electronic Power Steering failure
Hi all!
So today was a very rainy day (not sure if water had anything to do with it) in Wisconsin. I drove to grab some lunch this afternoon and when I put my car into park and turned it off I noticed it didn't make the normal sounds that it normally does. I ate my lunch and when I came back to start my car, the electronic power steering light came on and I had no power steering. I managed to muscle my way back to work, but when I turned it off again and opened the door it was binging at me like the car was still running. I tried messing with the under hood fuse block, but after unscrewing the multi-fuse I wasn't able to pull it out. I then tried starting my car again just to see, and my power steering was working again. I turned it off and back on, and now the power steering isn't working and the "check electronic power steering" light is back on. Is the EPS and ignition somehow connected together? It feels like something is screwy between the two of them. I have made an appointment with the mechanic for Wednesday morning, but I was going to see if anyone had any input on this before I drop it off tomorrow night.

If you have a '12 to '14 TL there's a TSB with an extended warranty that may apply to your issue.

Second the check TSB. Just for clarification, you will need to take it to an Acura dealer. The EPS module on my 2012 TL SH-AWD AUTO went out at 60k miles / ~6 years ago, before the TSB. At that time, Acura Customer Care claimed that the EPS module could be replaced / calibrated by non-Acura repair centers, which was untrue. As I understand it, all new CANBUS modules on the TLs, such as the ESP, can ONLY be initialized / configured by an Acura dealer (Honda said that they couldn't replace / configure the EPS module either, at the time).
The extended warranty says the below has to happen. My car is becoming very tight to steer all of the sudden, but I have no lights or indications on the dash. Does it need to show a code for them to cover it?
"This warranty covers vehicles where the steering feels heavier than normal, or is hard to turn, particularly when the vehicle is not moving, and either the EPS indicator blinks with no DTCs, or the EPS indicator comes on steady with DTC 32-09 (motor current correlation), DTC 32-08 (EPS control unit internal circuit [current sensor]), or DTC 61-04 (motor harness malfunction)."

For this TSB to be relevant, you should be getting the EPS warning light / "Check Power Steering System" as pointed out in the TSB link above, on Page -2-. If you are not getting those warnings on the dash, I would suspect that your problem is different and probably not related to the TSB.
~6 years ago, I did get the EPS warning light / message as mentioned in the TSB. Plus I was able to get into the special diagnostic mode, thru my car's navigation system, to verify the bad CAN-BUS EPS module before I showed up to the dealer for repair.
